Alfa Romeo Tonale debuted in 2022 with front-wheel drive 1.5 liter petrol engine 130 or 160 hp (both with a mild hybrid), and a 1.6 liter diesel with 130 hp. In the pipeline was a 280-horsepower plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive, which would bring more excitement to the range. And here it is. Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 Veloce is supposed to take the Italian brand into the era of electromobility.

Really like how Alfa uses almost no glossy black surface that is a dust magnet unlike most other modern cars and not a huge tablet screen just smashed on top of the board or that wide screen that is SO POPULAR NOW. Pls Alfa, preserve the timeless elegant design forever.

Thanks for the review Marek. I think the Alfa might win over some people with its style and it's a cheaper entry point into the brand compared to the Giulia. Not sure I would pay the premium for the PHEV without the steering feel offering something a bit more sporting though. Also, strong competition from vehicles like the BMW X1 and Volvo XC40 might make it tough.

Hi Marek. When talking about competition, besides that images of the X1 are from the previous model, you mentioned that the GLB comes with a PHEV version, which would be an interesting proposal if it would come with AWD system (GLA does not). I’ve heard that PHEV thing before but so far I’ve never seen that configuration anywhere. Even form other sources the information is that the GLA will remain with PHEV option but the GLB won’t, only mild hybrid after the facelift. Do you have more information about this? And, if possible, ask BMW for a X1 xDrive 30e test drive, just for comparison purposes.. ;-)

If I was in the market, I wish I could somehow get the looks of the Tonale with the size and platform of the Stelvio. The Stelvio is no goblin but the Tonale is seriously one of the best SUV designs ever, it's fantastic.

Could u clarify the mpg number you posted (52mpg US). Is that when starting w/ a full charge and running through the gas tank? If you’re always running on ev only…. Then you’re doing much better that that (although, that Will obviously require regular charging).

I drove this car for a week with about 30% driving using the internal combustion engine and 70% on electricity. The petrol engine kicks in for various reasons (hard acceleration, high speed, cold morning, etc.) or I just ran out of electricity, and had nowhere to recharge along the way, so I drove in regular hybrid mode for the rest of the day.

​@@DaveDVideoMakerI believe, I wouldn't buy neither one of them for that amount of money. It's lunacy imo. Also I don't remember when I used fast acceleration in practice honestly. I do prefer leg space, comfy seats, comfortable suspension, good sound isolation, good handling, visibility and modern headlights at night as well as good 360 system for camera. Beside regular stuff as dual a/c which is powered independent and decent audio system 0-100 means nothing to me especially if it's a mid class car for 60k and it depends on batter aka won't handle that amount of pressure for longer periods. There's a previous E class on sale, 2.0 diesel 4matic for 55k, 0km, under a year old, all equipment needed there. Two worlds, yes, a diesel but a real usable car. Just my opinion tho and only an example.

No matter how well built (it is by no means market leader in quality anyway...), to pay for an AR the same money you would pay for a similar specs BMW makes no sense... X1 is certainly not as pretty (having said that, Tonale is a pretty car but up to only that - it is not great looking by any means!) but X2 is also pretty and this is where problems for AR start.... AR has NOTHING 'more' to offer any more and is on the VERY expensive side... you buy them either because you are romantic (?) or because you want (to say) that you drive something different... even if essentially it is a Jeep or Peugeot underneath and we all know that! (as an example, in my opinion, from within Stellantis, DS4 is a much more 'unique' design as such).
