Isn't this piece everything you want from life? Liszt knew how to exploit the gifts of the piano. His use of the piano's lower register gave so much depth to his pieces. Chopin knew the power of the piano's low register. But many composers then seemed to not appreciate how the right bass notes bestowed great majesty to the melody. But Liszt, for me, is the best of Tchaikovsky and Richard Strauss all in one. The way Liszt modulates up and down the scale reminds me of Tchaikovsky. The melodies resolve in such a satisfying way. And with the long melody lines we are getting shades of Richard Strauss. Margaret Price gives this piece everything she has. She has a wonderful instrument. The pianist is OUTSTANDING. He has a light pedal, giving the accompaniment great drive, thrust and clarity. Does anyone know if Ms. Leontyne Price sang these songs as well? This seems like it would be right up her ally. It's extremely dramatic with notes into the stratosphere requiring exquisite breath control. Someone please let me know. I love Leontyne Price in Strauss, but I want to hear her doing Liszt if possible. Thanks in advance.
