It amazes me that so many conservatives today are climate change sceptics or are against taking action. Thatcher - the quintessential conservative - speaks clearly and powerfully on the topic, and saw the problem clearly.
@uptwisting3 жыл бұрын
I think your POV is flawed for the reason Thatcher was so hated; party political narratives. Most conservatives aren't sceptics but the anti-conservative media arent going to tell you that. The difference is how we achieve better, deliverable outcomes and the anti-conservative media call anyone with a different approach, deniers, rather than sceptics. Sceptics still engage in change, deniers dont.
@joemccarthy71203 жыл бұрын
What makes you think conservatives are against taking action? Everyone wants clean air, water etc.. Conservatives would prefer solutions that actually work rather than wind and solar which are only enormous fiscal drains on all of us.

@@joemccarthy7120 Conservatives in many countries - especially my own - have fought tooth and nail against any form of climate change action. In fact, they rolled back a free market solution that we'd implemented here (carbon trading scheme), which they themselves had supported about a decade earlier. So, conservatives have a pretty terrible track record around this - on the science, and on practical solutions. I think Thatcher would be appalled by many modern conservatives. To the extent that folks are going back to her wise messages here as forms of inspiration...that can only be a good thing.

The fact that Margaret Thatcher was the first to introduce the subject is absolute proof that it's a load of BS. CO2's part of the greenhouse effect is minuscule in comparison to that of water vapor. And for that matter the greenhouse effect does not drive the climate. Ozone is a genuine issue and CFCs should be banned. But that has nothing to do with carbon dioxide. Notice the threat to poor countries that their forests belong to the whole earth not to them. Also notice the push for nuclear power. This was just after her big battle with the coal miners in the UK. She wanted to end dependence upon coal and oil and to break the unions of the coal miners. Nobody, including Thatcher ever imagined doing away with fossil fuels. What they want to do is seize control of all oil gas and coal from the countries where it exists and transfer that power to their NWO global governance. _

Should be undeniable, but people still do not believe their own eyes. There was climate change denial in America. Now the climate deniers state "the climate is changing, but is it man-made?" YES... It was predicted in 1977 by Exxonmobil in 1977.. Please check out this fact. For anybody denying climate change, read Exxon´s studies and ask yourself, "they predicted it in 1977, now it is happening. Yet she is championing the fight against climate change almost 35 years ago. This being almost 30 years before the current wave of actions and protests 2) Almost everything she said might happen - has happened or is happening. She covers CO2, intensive farming, changed weather patterns, the ice caps, impact of ice sheets on absorbed radiation, energy policy, local and international levels of impact and practical need for observation and action. She cites reports from both the ice caps and the Amazon rainforest. 3) She puts the facts across in a very easy to understand. Citing her sources and providing ideas for solutions. Not just screaming at everyone around her or yelling at someone else to come up with a solution.

We will never recover from the damage she did to us as a whole nation. This piece is immaculately informed and performed so that possibly at last she was exactly the force required at that time. It is significant that her business driven government tore her apart only a year later.

@@sarahtacy9045 She certainly made huge mistakes, which looking back with 2021 climate eyes, some may see as inspiring eg-the pits, but they were going to close anyway as they were broadly unprofitable. We couldve let them go on, I do agree but this was a battle of ideology and neither side wanted to give. People forget the unions role in this. They ultimately harmed their cause too. She made decisions she thought had to be made which some socialists would've approved of, eg-saving British Leyland but it's correct that equity was not retained and some products of that save went on to be profitable for non-British business. Labour did the same when they failed to save Rover and risk is not something government do well. Her ousting was typical politics, which all parties get involved in and the Poll Tax ensured she was cornered. There is no significance, only opportunism. I'm from an immigrant family and Thatcher helped us hugely, so it's not as easy to say 'two tier'. We went from nothing, to establishing lives. To say 'we will never recover' is ridiculous. We have every opportunity to recover and the world is a very different place. We will never recover if people keep putting party politics above policy. The clip in question shows how to put policy before party politics and should serve as inspiration. 42 years on and people would still pigeonhole Thatcher, than learn how she achieve success. Can you imagine any Tory today trying to do this? The inhabitants of the Falkland Islands considered themselves to be British, they deserved defending, she defended them. And she was 100% correct on the threat of human induced climate change! Unsurprising, since before she became a full time politician, she was a working chemist. Her greatest legacy, IMO is that 40 years later, there is no debate here in the UK about the absolute need for our nation to reduce our carbon emissions. That there is cross party consensus on this. I did not mourn her passing, bur I did not rejoice in it. She was a great leader in a time of need.

And yet where did it get us? More than 30 years later it's much worse than predicted because not enough was done. And even whilet the effects are more apparent - and frequent - now than ever before, enough is still not being done.

Irony is that Merkel rejected the science in order to cater to an anti-science crowd. Ironically, its the same crowd that Thatcher called out in this speech : P

Mr President,| it gives me great pleasure | to return to the Podium of this assembly.| When I last spoke here four years ago,| on the 40th anniversary of the United Nations,| the message that I and others like me gave | was one of encouragement to the organisation | to play the great role allotted to it. Of all the challenges faced by the world community in those four years, | one has grown clearer than any other | in both urgency and importance-I refer to the threat to our global environment. I shall take the opportunity| of addressing the general assembly| to speak on that subject alone. We are seeing a vast increase in the amount of carbon dioxide reaching the atmosphere.| The annual increase is three billion tonnes: and half the carbon emitted since the Industrial Revolution| still remains in the atmosphere.

She had voice training from a tutor at the National Theatre once she became Leader of the Opposition to bring out of her a more pleasing voice and commanding presence in speech. And a wardrobe makeover too. If she ever had a hairstyle difference than that frozen helmet , it would have been as a very young woman.

She brings tears to my eyes. Today is August 13, 2021, a Friday. I write in the context of the recent IPCC "Code Red" climate change report, and it's dire, which we should expect from recent events, and of course, our knowledge as shown by Maggie. She speaks in the context of the 1980s, showing, proving that the ruling class (those who make decisions affecting this planet.) knew all along. Ignorant voters were kept in the dark. Now there's no time. I'm using this video for another video on my climate deception channel. I'll leave a link here when it's uploaded, which will take some doing.

I dont agree. I think they broadly agree but many anti-conservatives ignore the science which stifles whole change, such as having enough power to meet need, or ensuring change is affordable. You know, those things that non-conservatives use as a moral weapon to destroy debate & vilify the opposition.

In Europe kids were taught about global warming in the 1980s. Every kid in Europe knew this back then. I wrote an essay about global warming in 1986 when I was 14. (I still have the essay in a drawer). "The future will have more flooding, higher winds, more droughts etc. due to the release of CO2"... This was well known in the 80s, now we see it daily live. Is the man-made release of C02 causing climate change really something you can deny?"

All current Leaders and heads of states should watch this. It demonstrates just how long ago we new about climate change and what causes it. It is absolutely tragic that so little has been done and we are now on a knife edge. Possibly have gone past the point of no return.

Liberals love this speech. The same liberals who complained when Thatcher shut down coal mines. Don't forget, she also supported nuclear energy.
@kieian473 жыл бұрын
After 32 Years, this speech is still relevant as ever. Fast track to COP26 Glasgow Summit 2021, climate change affects everyone regardless of race, language, culture, status (ie. increasing unpredictability of storms and heat waves), threatens food and fresh water supply. Climate change will create future environmental refugees and some wars in years to come. Q1. Who's going to pay for all this climate change funds, especially there is still continuous population growth in some countries. Q2. If coal, oil & gas are not to be used, how will this affect this group of professionals (ie. affecting different industries), and what are the incentives not to use these resources., What are the viable cost effective renewable energy sources? Will this lead to energy manipulation or energy nationalism endangering other countries? Q3. How are poorer countries going to adapt these sea rise? Q4. Will simply using electric cars , result in greener future - how is the electricity generated when massive populations are charging? if nuclear energy is considered, what are the safeguards to dispose used uranium, how to ensure that it just become Fukushima 2011 again?
