2 oz blanco tequila 3/4 oz fresh squeezed lime juice 1/2 oz simple syrup 1/2 oz triple sec Shake with ice to chill. Rub half the outside of the rim of a glass with lime wedge, then turn it in salt (just the outside). Put small ice cubes in glass (from ice cube molds not automatic ice) and strain drink into glass. Good tips, the idea of a template to a drink is what I've learned over time. The basic ratios of main alcohol to liqueurs to sweeteners to mixers are similar for drinks with the same basic profile as each other. Once I got a good sense of what ratios work well I find it's easy to experiment and have good results.

Do bars typically build around 2oz or 1.5oz pours of the base spirit? Most KZbin videos seems to do 2oz pours, but I figure that's for us home cocktail enthusiasts and not necessarily bar quantities. Just curious. Thanks!

Cheap bars, concerts, festivals with cheap drinks generally have a standard pour of 1.5 with a $2bump for 2oz pours. Fine dinning and hotels usually do 2oz for drinks like rum/coke. Cocktail bars/speakeasy bars usually do 2oz or what the standard cocktail recipe calls for. There are some exceptions but most classic cocktails have a total amount of 2oz of main spirit.
