The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

@@alainspiteri502 Au Contraire, Monsieur! Without Dame Margot opening the door to Covent Garden for Rudi, his roughness would not have been tolerated by the West at that time ... The tutoring of the great Danish Dancer, Erik Bruhn's gave Nureyev much needed polish .... (Even Rudi admitted, "(as a Dancer) I do not feel empty anymore!") and then, Margot Fonteyn offered Nureyev THE Opportunity of the 20th Century. Fonteyn & Nureyev brought out the Miraculous in each other, yes - however, BE AWARE!!! after Opening Night with Dame Fonteyn, Rudi .... bowed DEEPLY and unforgettably (getting down on one knee) to HER✨🌹🌹

Isn't it interesting how ballet has changed into a specialized athleticism. Margot Fonteyn considered among the greatest prima ballerinas of the 2oth century and her technique would be considered inadequate today. But what an artist. How was she able at the age of over 40 to convince you she was a 14 year old girl in Romeo and Juliet. But, I was one of the lucky few who got to witness this phenomenon when I was a young ballet student.

Interesting, why her technique would be considered inadequate? It looks right.
@sedekiman
@sedekiman 3 жыл бұрын
@@____Ga Her technique is no NOT inadequate. What has happened in dance today is over emphasis on great extension to the detriment, in many instances, of distorting the music to allow for this. I find much of today's performances virging on the grotesque. Where is the musicality. the projection of character, the simplicity of movement? By that I mean not overdone, less is more.

Couldn’t you manage not to make critical comments about her. That is the problem with people trying to evaluate people or performances in contrast to the way things are now. I think it is possible to enjoy a performance from the past for What It Is - and for what it was in the past -WITHOUT even mentioning people who might have judgmental attitudes about it. You could have just/only said something positive about her performance and not brought negativity into it at All.

Thank you for your response to my comment on Margot Fonteyn 's technique as being considered inadequate according to today's standards. I mean how could the greatest ballerina of the twentieth century have inadequate technique? Perhaps I should have chosen a different word other than "technique. " But haven't you noticed the dramatic difference in Fonteyn 's right angle second position extension as compared with the ballerinas of today who attain a second position extension which comes close to touching the ear. And, in supported arabesque, the ballerina comes close to a 180 degree extension. But, lest I be misunderstood, I absolutely adored Margot Fonteyn. I remember standing meekly in line as a young dancer praying that somehow I would be miraculously blessed with tickets to a sold out performance. And, I got them! Seeing Fonteyn was one of the most memorable events in my life. Her artistry was without compare. Who cares about how high someone can extend her leg when she, as an over forty dancer, completely convinces you that she is a fourteen year old Juliet. So, no more talk of technique. Art will always win out.

It's not always about technique, you also need to capture the audience.
@chriscunningham8807
@chriscunningham8807 2 жыл бұрын
Modern performers might train and torture their bodies to acheive better results than their predecessors yet lack the emotional appeal to attract an audience. Margot Fonteyn was wise enough to protect her body to prolong her career. Her point work and extensions did not stress or damage her feet or body. She made up for less dramatic extensions by perfecting timing, technique and grace. No wonder Nureyev was mesmerised. She attained the control, discipline and calm he lacked. What a fabulous pair. He galvanised her and she calmed him down and brought security and balance.

@@jessicah3450 Besides, there’s nothing technical about lifting your leg up your ear, especially if to do it you have to disregard correct placement, line and épaulement, which are essential for classical ballet.

It looks like they are just marking positions....half ass doing them. That last side extension just died half way up to 100 degree angle...and not a degree higher. I guess it hurt too much and just was just too dang tired to lift it with conviction just a tad higher...and actually sustain it there for just a few seconds.
