This channel does so, so much for the great and unique Maria Callas!!! She‘s a legend... deservedly so... without a doubt... But there‘s one thing I observed that I can‘t appreciate: too much negative talk about other singers, and sometimes commentators tend to be nasty in order to point out how much superior MC was to everybody else... These comments create an atmosphere which somehow remind me of the past-time wars going on between the fans of different prime donne... So sad... Nevertheless, thank you for sharing your recordings! 🙏🍀

Сравнивать певиц можно и обсуждать, если их уже нет с нами и только в целях познания и увековечивания искусства пения, а не дискредитации певца и умаления его возможностей, иначе это отпугнёт от оперы молодых, только начинающих певцов, которые будут ожидать перемалывание косточек и их настрой иссякнет, не начавшись.

I guess Deutekom gets credit for even attempting it after Callas. But Callas is out of this world... And whatever she does, I can always *feel* the line of the melody weaving its way through the air - with Deutekom, it somehow gets lost among the ornaments. As for the sheer vocal power, words aren't enough... sparks fly! What a night it must have been!

Hola Barone, Callas lo supera todo, y nada se puede comparar con ella. Pero Deutekom a pesar de su falta de expresividad actoral, tiene una técnica perfecta, la manera que tiene de articular cada nota en los pasajes virtuosos, es excepcional. De hecho Deutekom es la mejor "Reina de la Noche" de todos los tiempos. Nota: Claro que porque Callas decidió no cantar ese papel!!!😝

Maria sounds like she’s singing the role. Christina sounds like she’s doing vocal exercises. That’s the difference. I love them both, but the difference in attitude is evident here. Maria takes it seriously, Christina sounds like she’s having fun.

Callas is unique and unsurpassable in this role. You hear the melody, and you almost don’t realize what a tremendously difficult technical feat she just pulled off. I find Deutekom fascinating. The best description of her cluckatura I’ve heard is that she sounds like she’s gargling with marbles in her mouth. It’s not as bad here though. But you hear more notes and not as much melody. And interesting how she avoids the low notes.

There is a passage in Deutekom's O zittre nicht (the written-out trill on G5-F#5 just before the ascent to F6) where she sounds exactly like a rooster crowing. I just can't take any singer seriously whose technique produces such unintentionally comic effects.

@@jasonhurd4379 The first time I heard Deutekom was also on that Magic Flute recording with Solti. Her coloratura was so fascinating and a bit disturbing. It sounded to me like a violin being played with no vibrato or portamento. And that passage you talk about, just before the high F sounded just like a chicken to me too. Interestingly, there are later recordings of her where she doesn't doe the gargling coloratura. She was definitely one of a kind.

@@Shahrdad I had a Lucia with her where she didn't cluck at all. She is the only singer I have heard use that technique. In her chapter in Jerome Hines' book Great Singers on Great Singing, she does not address the issue at all.

@@jasonhurd4379 I read an interview with her a couple of decades ago where she said she thought that’s how it was supposed to be done, but she could also do it the other way too. I’m still amazed at how she managed the technique, as if she were saying ghaghaghagha as she sang. Fascinating and equally disturbing and utterly unique.

Deutekom does an admirable job here, but that's about it. I didn't realize she had ever done Armida. The 2 main things I don't care for in her performance is 1) it's too mechanical with no "feel" for the role. And 2), although she has a large voice, I also feel it's way too bright for this role. (I am glad, though, that at least her coloratura wasn't near as much "cluckoratura" as her Queen of the Night is! A few times it almost went that way, but fortunately she sounds like she was able to reel that in. Callas will always be the pinnacle for Armida.

While I appreciate Deutekom's voice and some of her technique, to me it will always sound as though she is made of clockwork. I don't know if that's good or bad, but I don't know any other way to describe her voice.

I have listened to the linked recording, and indeed it is lovely - as Armida, though,her transitions from note to note are somewhat stilted, giving me the impression of clockwork, be it for good or ill. I am a Callas diehard through - she is intrinsic to my very existence at this point. Against her, none may stand.

Con respecto a Deutekom, es cierto que no es muy expresiva, pero creo que es estupenda, y con mi video no tengo intención de establecer una comparación entre ambas, sino la de poder disfrutar dos versiones de ésta aria. This entire opera is bizarre and oddly written. This aria is a nightmare to prepare learn perform and in many parts no matter WHO is singing WEIRD. These two sopranos really were the only ones to kind of take it to a Prima Donna glam sorceress level. Others are credible yet there is always something not quite there. I think Rossini wrote this role to be a witch and wanted a strangeness to it all. One has to be somewhat strident flexible full and unusual to go somewhere with it. Caballé was glorious and easy to follow/ listen to with the right power and tonality. The Anderson 80’s & Fleming 90’s essays were clean and well sung of course but still pale colored and sounded too normal. This role & opera is BIZARRE.

Le rapport entre les deux est de 1 à 10 en faveur de Callas ! Callas a une voix gigantesque et volcanique avec des erruptions spectaculaires dans le registre aigu et des descentes chromatiques abyssales .Personne ne pourra plus réaliser cela Deutekom en comparaison prend la partition avec beaucoup de prudence et laisse de côté les descentes dans le registre grave .En plus elle articule ses vocalises de façon très scolaire comme une étudiante .C'est très gentil et inexpressif ...et c'est tout !! Basta .

Callas as Armida are unique, all the scales are super even sung, and its no bumps nor strange coloratura. Its utterly amazing how Callas the musician gives to a very hard aria, and how it expresses Armidas heart. The Deutecom version is almost banal. She avoids the technical dangers in the aria. The scales are cut in the middle. Its clearly too demanding for her, and the Deutecom technique does not suit the most difficult Rossini.

Comparing one singer to another based on excerpts from a performance really shows that people know little about vocal technique and the particularities that each singer carries with them. It is understandable that the comments are in the field of I like it or I don't like it, as it is easier to have critical depth.

Deutekom a better singer for whom? Turkeys? Every vocalize she does, even the simplest one sounds like a turkey. This is not a fault of the voice but of her (unexistant) Bel Canto technique.

Learn which technique did teacher gave to the singer. At the end, you'll find out, that Deutekom's glottal approach is more historically correct than Callas's.
