A magnificent rendition. The youthful timbres and passionate singing of the men make the tragedy of their consanguinity even more affecting than usual, and Callas melds everything together with her usual artistry. But really, even over and above the vocal excellence on display, the real star of this recording is Karajan. His status as a Salzburger born and bred means that, even if only geographically, he breathed in the sultry air of Italy his entire life, and Verdi was an especial love of his. In this recording of an often maligned opera, Karajan's smoothness and finesse bring out the Gothic, Goya-esque colors of the score, and in tandem with three of his favorite singers, he gives us a reading of chiaroscuro and drama. Very enjoyable! Thank you, Manoli!

It's interesting you mention Von Karajan. The original plan for this recording was Maria Callas and Richard Tucker. They had paired successfully in Aida and La Forza Del Destino. Tucker who was a devout member of the Jewish faith would nor sing for Von Karajan because Von Karajan allegedly supported the Nazis in Germany so Di Stefano who never sang Il Trovatore on stage was in this recording.

The Best Trio ever recorded in Trovatore!! Callas is Magical, Di Stefano is not only heroic but also Romantic and Panerai is a very convincing Luna!! But for me the best is the perfect timing and conducting of Karajan with the 3 of them!!!

I remember a small 45 rpm vinyl record I had bought as pupil, many decades ago, with pieces from this recording. It's so beautiful. Thank you, dear Manoli.

Richard Tucker was due to be Manrico, but when he found out Karajan was conducting, he withdrew.

Why’s that?

Tucker was Jewish and at the time. Karajan was said to have had nazi sympathy
