You need that infinite nostalgic high notes..the desperation and beauty at the same time only Callas is able to convey..this aria is the top masterclass of Bel Canto and other performances are lacking the Callas' magic touch. The 1965 recording is an example of the struggle to achieve the requirements of one of the most complicated arias, and more so in the high notes part. It s true that there is a lot left: air, strength, but always taking risks and trying to perform at the highest level. The 1956 recording is absolut perfection! Bravo Callas

Grazie Gaston❤ Nel 1952 la voce di Maria è intatta nell’estensione è aderente perfettamente alle ansie e alle speranze di Leonora. Nel 1965 la voce è più profonda e ancora più espressiva. Insomma, in qualunque anno (o quasi) Maria resta in cima a tutte: inarrivabile 👏🏻👏🏻

Weird vowel distortions in the later recording. And the wobble above the staff is very obtrusive.

I agree. She started having trouble with the "a"s and the "e"s very soon in her career.
