We took a charming Maria Fumaça tour departing from the city of Passa Quatro, in Minas Gerais. The tour took us through the beautiful landscapes of Serra da Mantiqueira, with stops at the picturesque stations of Manacá and Coronel Fulgêncio. One of the most exciting parts of the journey was the stop at the historic tunnel where the famous Café com Leite War took place, a significant milestone in regional history. The combination of history, culture and nature made this tour a memorable and engaging experience.
Story Summary:
The Café com Leite War was a political clash that took place in Brazil during the Old Republic, especially during the 1920s. The term "café com Leite" refers to the expression that represented the political predominance of the states of São Paulo, producer of coffee, and Minas Gerais, a milk producer, on the national scene. This dispute was characterized by the alternation of presidents representing these states, aiming to maintain the balance of power between them.
The Café com Leite War reflected the struggle for political control of the country between the São Paulo and Minas Gerais oligarchies. Presidential elections were marked by agreements between these states, in which they took turns as president of the Republic, ensuring that their interests were protected. This resulted in a political system known as governors' politics, where the president centralized power and state governors exercised great influence over local politics.
Despite representing a certain political stability, the Café com Leite War also highlighted the exclusion of other regions of the country from the political process, in addition to contributing to the maintenance of an agro-export economic model that highly concentrates income and power. This was one of the main criticisms of the Old Republic, which ended up contributing to its decline and the consequent establishment of a new political model in the country.
