no problem! this variation is from the Legend of Love, which was first staged in the 1960s if i'm remembering correctly, so you could make an argument for it being classical or not classical :) maria is currently 17 and has one more year till she graduates from vaganova academy, but she was just accepted into the mariinsky theatre as an intern (she is the only intern there). she's "only" danced in two divertissement shows so far, but since it's summer break now, hopefully she might be dancing parts in full ballets at some point :)

Very unusual choreography! The way this dancer moves her arms and especially her hands is something I've seen only rarely in ballet. Is there a name for this style? Her facial expressions are excellent as well. She's really living the role. Thank you for uploading this!

this is from a ballet called Legend of Love from the 1960’s, the hands are part of the ballet! it was actually coreographed by Yuri Grigorovich who worked for the Bolshoi:)

I just don't like the Bolshoi preoccupation with placing jewels and designs over the nipples. Not sure if it's her build or a design choice, but the design looks larger and displaced to the side compared with here and in ballets like Spartacus.

К сожалению, этот балет не идет за пределами России. На мой взгляд, это лучший балет Григоровича. А дань традициям - это далеко не всегда плохо.

Именно поэтому в костюмах использованы элементы восточных костюмов, но при этом в них удобно танцевать. Композитор Ариф Меликов, хореограф Юрий Григорович (ему в этом году исполнилось 95 лет), художник Симон Вирсаладзе. Либретто, по-моему, есть на английском языке на сайте Мариинского театра. Этот балет совсем не такой, как Жизель, но тоже о любви и пожертвовании во имя любви, Об этом спектакле можно много говорить, но формат комментария не дает это сделать. Its actually a bit sad for Marija since she didn't have the kind of competition she'd deserved and that she'd normally had at an high class international event. So it was more sort of a national competition there in Moscow, lining up russian dancers in the first plus such from countries closely associated to Russia due to common history in the Soviet Union. Some of the contestants from other countries are studying or have studied at the renowned russian ballet academies (Luka Dobos and Taiga Kodama-Pomfret for example). In the juniors competition, out of 32 dancers actually 7 at maximum didn't have any of such connections. Some of the foreign competitors didn't even apply for taking part in the contest, but got downright invited by the organizers - such es Ilina Eder for example, an Austrian dancer with russian roots that doesn't even dance professionally but works as a teacher. So many of them ran completely out of competition from the beginning and appeared more to be fill-ins to at least keep the appearence of an 'international competition' up to a minimum.

that's interesting, i knew they had fewer international dancers than usual for obvious reasons but i didn't know they actually invited people. in maria's case I think she can still come back for the next mbc if she wants, when she'll be old enough to compete in the senior group, and hopefully things will be better by then :)

I don't think that the level of the ballet competition in Russia suffers at all if foreign-trained performers do not participate in it. And you can't call a ballet competition high-level if Russian dancers don't participate in it, because real ballet only exists in Russia, and ballet theaters of other countries only have ballet to the extent that they include Russian performers, coaches, chorographers. And everything else there is not ballet, but only aerobics and gymnastics.

Nobody cares about those ballet competitions. Maria has been dancing at the Bolshoi (The best ballet company in the world) since she was 18 years old. Our girls will be world stars, everyone knows that Russians are the best in ballet. They ban skaters, swimmers and now they also ban girls who practice ballet. No matter how much you fool yourself, our girls are the best.
