florestan eusebius I thought the same thing when I first began listening. However, when you listen to her lugubrious beginning in the context of her interpretation as a whole, I think it becomes quite convincing. She uses the weightiness at the beginning as an effective structural tool; the heaviness gradually subsides until it disappears completely in the second theme. Maybe a little bit forced, but the concept certainly shines an interesting light on the ballade.
