Honestly, its just a quick way to get the companion character out of the way to let the player be by himself to make it more scary lol

SPOILERS: She is becoming sick just like James wife, thats why u see her taking pills. The window was meant to show the rain, which is symbolic of something else... but I can think of a connection between the two events. Also yes, of course, it's a way to allow the player to explore alone, but the scene does have strong story implications, espcially considering it's connection to one of the endings.
