Not only is it amazing how she replicates so many of these really difficult elements live here, but the recording itself is also incredible. For Mariah, unlike with most singers, I consider her studio vocals to be as legitimate as other singers' live vocals, and I would personally feel comfortable comparing her studio vocals to other singers' live ones because of her artistic integrity (not to mention autotune wasn't invented until she was a decade into her career anyways). Most singers use studio tricks, but for Mariah, her studio tracks are a genuine representation of her voice, maybe even moreso than her live vocals as she's a studio rat and has always had bad stage fright. Even to this day, when she pops in with a random acapella of a random song in her discography she can sound exactly like the old record because she's relaxed, and that relaxation simply doesn't come through in her more scheduled tour/live performances.

Auto tuning has always been around it just has advanced over time. It’s nothing like live singing. The studio always had some tuning.
@renanrpm
@renanrpm Жыл бұрын
@@ArtTheSinger Autotune was invented in 1998. Mariah was from a period where the most you could do was some correction of volume, projection or in last case re-doing the vocal track, what was REALLY expensive and people always tried to avoid it by doing the best they could in one take.

I’m so glad that someone with proper vocal knowledge talks through her voice because it is really a unique voice ! Mariah said that she learned how to sing through the nodules and how to take “advantage” of them . All her vocal signatures are based on the nodules ( the high belts, the vocal breaks, the whistles, the velvety falsetto…) ! This woman is a GENIUS vocally

If people are expect “perfection notes” they don’t will have top singers , because is not just about notes , is more than this , storytelling - feelings - interpretation….. in this both cases , Mariah is UNIQUE AND SO PERFECT most of the times

I don’t know why some people are convinced Mariah is giving a look to her backup singers (same thing on the SNL performance). She’s not. For one, the backup singers are completely behind her o both performances. And also, the note the background singer links to her note is meant to be there because Mariah can’t possibly sing both notes like on the record. And this happens seconds earlier than when Mariah gives the “look”. Anyhow, she’s just feeling the lyric and being in the moment. It’s like similar to her tilting her face right before she goes for the whistles on Emotions during Unplugged. Case closed.

Thank you. It would be amusing if it was for someone in particular, but when I watched back again, you can clearly see that she is not looking at them, and the main reason she looks mad I think is the angle of her face.

I really never understood that bullshit of “death stare” to her background singers people created. I mean, it’s basic physics: she couldn’t be looking to the background singers who were behind her just by looking to the side, light doesn’t make curves in normal situations 🤡

Mariah is one of the only female artists with Falsetto. She does this breathy and nasal sound (falsetto) on purpose. If you listen to her live performances of Dreamlover in 93 to 98, you hear that she uses a head voice that is clear and completely different from her falsetto.

Excellent breakdown of the performance! This and the SNL performance are my favorite, even with the rasp.She always had a rasp it just became more prominent in '97 due to over working+ further growth of the nodules. It gives her voice character, I like it. Please do "Vanishing" and "All In Your mind" from the MSG '93 concert. P.s. The entire concert was uploaded to KZbin by a fan who actually attended back in '93 but It was broken down into separate videos(individual songs) by other lamb channels.

Buon giorno! I am new here.... Glad to find you. Mariah modifies her vowels so uniquely and has phenomenal vocal stamina... must singers would let the instrumentation and background singers do all the work but Mariah uses perfectly timed and placed runs and risks ruining everything if she doesn't get it exactly right LIVE. I just can't with her ear, courage and choices! Mariah Carey's throat is truly blessed, but her brain is what really sets her apart. You have great taste...

Great analysis, the reason I think she shapes her mouth different is to ensure she saves enough breath for the next lines. There is a vocal exercise I used to do is to control how much breath you use and the excercize is to make a szzszzzz sound and try to hold it for 1 min. I think it's the same thing she is doing her to ensure she has enough breath and don't spend too much

This song is extremely difficult to sing (well, obviously I can't) but even painful to hear (wich I imagine is the purpose in the 1st place). I love it and is one of my fav songs from Mariah, so, we can analize this for hours and hours because is so complex and rich. I know that she is not as famous and probably wont generate the views of Mariah (who is my fav singer ever) but I would love to watch your analysis of Monica Naranjo's "Desátame", that song is a true masterpiece and the vocals are in-sa-ne. ¡Saludos!

@@LetsTalkAboutSinging yes, she is an spanish singer but she launched her career here in México in the 90's and her voice is incredible (after that era she begins to make weird choices, but that's another story). Her mom was the made of Salvador Dali and he predicted her future when she was just a child: she will be a star. By the way, Mariah looking at the back singer, that was shade, it was such an "stop singing my part now baby" moment, and I love it!!!

hi there, Marco...!!! i'm mightly glad to come across your reaction to Mariah Carey... i grew up hearing her music most of the time but i was biased over another diva with a different singing style... i'm in my senior years now, and I am so glad to 'understand' the Mariah I had not appreciated as much before... * Just like other singers who have been influenced or inspired by Mariah and other unforgettable legends, there is a group of soloists in the Philippines who have collaborated to perform ONE SWEET DAY... I really loved this iconic song and to make a cover of it is, shall I say, risky due to millions of fans who expect nothing lesser than what Mariah & Boyz II Men did in this song... this new artists are indeed brave and I was not prepared that a Filipino group could do justice to the song after 3(?) decades... The group's name is BUDAKHEL Featuring KATRINA VELARDE who sang Mariah's part... BUDAKHEL is an acronym from their first names -- BUgoy Drilon, DArren Ong, KHEL (short for Michael) Pangilinan... * COULD YOU PLS. REACT TO THEIR COVER -- ONE SWEET DAY... Thanks !!! *

Rasp is not inherently a negative and it added to the tonal and dynamic variation she already possesses, IMO. Not every year is going to be Daydream Era perfection - 1993 had a ton of inconsistency with nodule issues as well. Despite having less ease, she was still in her peak and gained agility

@@cr3413 Rasp appearing in a voice that is naturally clear is a negative especially when it's coupled with fatigue and the voice suddenly being lower. Those are signs that a) the nodules were inflamed and b) her voice was feeling the effects of years of overuse + stress. Mariah was always inconsistent because of the nodules but let's not act like her voice wasn't in a better condition in 1993 versus 1998. I don't get the logic here but each to their own.

@@crackhdwhitney893 @John Gil Dorado this comment exchange is so wrong on so many levels I don’t even know where to start. I almost deleted all of your comments, because honestly they made me feel ashamed, but I thought I could use them to rewrite this in a positive way instead. One thing I will tell the both of you is that I don’t tolerate hateful/racist/discriminatory comments on my channel, a channel that is supposed to be about music, an art that it’s about communication, beauty, and unity, the opposite of what your comments are. Crackhd Whitney, you’re free to choose the name you want, I found it weird if you love Mariah, since Mariah loved Whitney, but still, it’s your choice. Loving Mariah doesn’t mean hating on other singers, and anyone can ask me to react to anything they want without being insulted, ESPECIALLY in a discriminatory way towards the country that they’re from. The fact that you talk about the Philippines in those terms is honestly despicable, and it shows how little you know about that country, or other countries in general, especially third world countries. I don’t know where you’re from, but I suggest you to maybe read more about it, or check some videos about how amazing third world countries can be, and how shitty first world country can also be. Mariah’s music and message is all about unity and anti racism, you’re both really not making her proud with these comments. Same thing with you @John Gil Dorado, I’m sorry you were insulted, and I understand you felt attacked but “Stop being black” is really an unacceptable comment, you can’t fight discrimination with more discrimination, does it make sense? Also Mariah is black! So please, both of you do better, I’m writing this with the best of intentions, I would love if you could reply to my comment in a nice way, or even apologize to each other, otherwise I’ll just end this conversation, and if I read one more discriminatory comment I’ll delete everything. This channel is about positive vibes only. Thank you both for following me and liking my channel, I don’t take this for granted, but I just can’t accept to read those things under my video, I hope you understand. Peace and love to both ☮️❤️
