The fact that the chorus contains the words… “nonchalant” “extremes” “reality” “slowly” “losing” “underneath” “guise” “gradually” “inside” “friends” “convincingly” “reveal” “suffering” “disguise” “night” “lights” “breakdown”… She is savage with that pen! 🔥

There was never anyone like Bone Thugs before them. They don't get enough respect shown to them in my opinion. So many rappers today owe their style to Bone, from Future to Migos.

Iconic. You guys might be too young but this blend was almost unheard of at the time in mainstream pop/r&b. I feel like these boys really aren't understanding the Roof and Breakdown and Mariah's iconic era and how much she was in charge.

Mariah in an interview said that she sang that way to mimic Bone Thugs n Harmony’s cadence! Especially bc they do a lot of that depressive/emotional rap and this is such an emo song lol I think it’s cool that she interpreted that style in her way and kinda paid respects to their style at the same time.

Mariah has stated that she was heavily influenced by Bone Thugs when she heard them. Mariah released the song “One Sweet Day” that was about death and losing loved ones and it did well…but when Bone Thugs put out Tha Crossroads it was a smash grammy award winning hit and Mariah loved thier sound. She invited them to come collab on a song and the story is they almost didnt do but they were talked into it. Krayzie and Wish are on this song but theres a remix that adds Layzie Bone onto it and the verses are extended. Its called the “Mo Thug Remix” and its worth checking out! She also has another hand full of songs with them Also Usher was also clearly influenced by Bone and many many others

Mariah is widely-credited for popularizing the blend of pop, hip hop and r&b as well as these collabs. It's quite wild to think that she single-handedly changed the course of popular music. Incredible impact and musicality. And those lyrics? Clearly a reason she's in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. One of my favorite parts of this song is how it builds from melancholy to full-blown wails that mimic a "breakdown."

Mariah heard "Crossroads" by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, which was big at the time and borrowed the melody for "Breakdown." She asked some members to collaborate. There is a Mo Thugs remix of Breakdown with an extended rap section. In her memoir, she has a funny anecdote about their collaboration. 🍁 Mo Thugs is a spin-off group of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and was formed to showcase Cleveland-based artists BTNH were developing.

You mixed up what Bone Thugs n Harmony were doing. They weren't singers. They were a rap group of rappers that mixed rap with a melodic flow and harmonies which wasn't really seen at the time. They popularized chopper rap which is a rap subgenre that is a fast paced style of rapping. It originated in the Midwest. They are from Ohio. Mariah was among those that popularized collaborating with rappers in r&b songs which initially they were hesitant to do bec they wanted her to have a certain image
