Mariah has stated that she was heavily influenced by Bone Thugs when she heard them. Mariah released the song “One Sweet Day” that was about death and losing loved ones and it did well…but when Bone Thugs put out Tha Crossroads it was a smash grammy award winning hit and Mariah loved thier sound. She invited them to come collab on a song and the story is they almost didnt do but they were talked into it. Krayzie and Wish are on this song but theres a remix that adds Layzie Bone onto it and the verses are extended. Its called the “Mo Thug Remix” and its worth checking out! She also has another hand full of songs with them Also Usher was also clearly influenced by Bone and many many others

Mariah is widely-credited for popularizing the blend of pop, hip hop and r&b as well as these collabs. It's quite wild to think that she single-handedly changed the course of popular music. Incredible impact and musicality. And those lyrics? Clearly a reason she's in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. One of my favorite parts of this song is how it builds from melancholy to full-blown wails that mimic a "breakdown."

Mariah heard "Crossroads" by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, which was big at the time and borrowed the melody for "Breakdown." She asked some members to collaborate. There is a Mo Thugs remix of Breakdown with an extended rap section. In her memoir, she has a funny anecdote about their collaboration. 🍁 Mo Thugs is a spin-off group of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and was formed to showcase Cleveland-based artists BTNH were developing.

They popularized chopper rap which is a rap subgenre that is a fast paced style of rapping. It originated in the Midwest. They are from Ohio. Mariah was among those that popularized collaborating with rappers in r&b songs which initially they were hesitant to do bec they wanted her to have a certain image
