Thi was exatly my thoughts 1st time i heard the remix plus you have the original version to compare. I think her upper belts are the most compromised part of her voice, anything above C5 is not on her comfortable zone anymorecunless she use head voice/falsete. But she got acapella moments on quarentine when she doesnt have that grainy texture in her upper belts, but it appeared again the more "serious" home performances, so i tend to think it may be something added on production, dont know who thinks it sounds good..

In 2020 she actually had good vocal moment with stay the night and your girl in her house. It really sounded good. Mariah's voice has matured very much. She isn't really allowing it to come out. She tries to maintain that girlish tone, so most of the time her tone is extremely chipmunkish. If Mariah actually lowered her larynx and opened her throat, her actual great tone can come out.

Can I say something. As a person who sings often, certain notes are more easy to deliver because, physically, I've memorized how to do them. Talking about tessitura, breath control and support, eventual distortions.... And it's something I will never forget. Sometimes it's not about vocal issues or something else... She hasn't lost her voice, tho she has lost her confidence on stage. You can easily see a difference between her performances from 90s and those recent. She has some bad "vocal behaviours", which are mainly caused by stress, such as trying to make her belts louder and more powerful, but as a result they just seem to lack this warm depth, which was present in her prime, she also uses far too much staccato nowadays. Anyway, she still sounds better than most of today "artists".

Her skill and musicality will keep on improving, but her physiology just doesn't allow her to use her voice the way she did during the first 5 years in her career (in 1996, all of her concerts had Butterfly rasps at some points when she is hitting high notes). She changed her overall technique (I guess, the resonance sounds like completely cavity, so she is exploring her own voice at this point, I guess...idk). She sounds amazing anyways!!!!!

The Roof remake she just did sounds good because it's in her current range and fits her current tone. Added effects aside I do believe is more about the approach she is taking to the notes. Remember that Fantasy was originally recorded in a high tessitura but belting and lately instead of belting she is using more of a heady mix, not because she can't access her upper belt, we saw through the videos posted during quarantine of Hero, Joy to the World and Vision of Love also Fall in love this Christmas time you can hear a heavier sound on her upper belt but is more about tone and not the notes she is using. We all know she is a master changing her own tone throughout her entire range including whistle. She is trying to get a lighter sound with the heady mix and she is mixing because she doesn't want to loose the power chest brings, remember Fantasy even though she does not push the notes yet she pushes the pronunciation of the consonants against the instruments "sweeT, sweeT fanTasy BaBy when I Close my eyes you come and Take me. So Deep in my Daydream buT iTs jusT a sweeT sweeT fanTasy baBy!” this consonants can get tricky because she has to keep a legatto singing but they are consonants that make you hold the breath back and is released abruptly so although she might be belting E5, C5 and FT because of the weighty tone she's gotten because of age (vocal folds keep growing throughout your life so it's more difficult to stretch them enough in order to provide a more piercing sound and that happens to EVERYBODY) so instead of stretching the chords she is deciding to use a forward placement and heady mixing is perfect for her this days because the agility she has in belt is amazing despite what haters say the agility on her head voice is unparalleled as we saw on WBT 2021 version. This are simply smart choices, also she is a 50 year old woman she doesn't want to sound like a young girl anymore. As a matter fact the only reason why Mariah can get away winging songs like Fantasy, Always be my baby, Dreamlover and Heartbreaker is because people go to her concerts to listen to those magnificent pipes she has, is not just nostalgia haters try to pretend nobody goes to her performances but that is not true, people still want to listen to the acrobatics Mariah can achieve nowadays, things that 20 year old artists of today can't even understand the way she is working her voice. This is a smart, educated and well thought out strategy from her, there is no one way Mariah hits a note she can belt a C5, mix a C5, use head voice and falsetto (in my opinion they are different things for Mariah think of the WBT falsetto against the final note of Infinity in head voice, they have very different textures) hit a C5. Also the production is quite different, reminds me of what she did in Runaway for the Japanese edition of her album Caution. She samples part of the climax of Butterfly and you hear the same type of vocals. That's the sound she is exploring but we perfectly know that she can still use that luscious sound and if she sings I stay in love today I bet she would slay full voice the last F5s

Rasp was constantly present with unclear runs. 1993 wasn't tired, she was sick. Her voice was big, dark, powerful and agile when she wasn't sick. The major problems that I hear with her vocals is that she's been having major registration problems for a while. Her full voice is way too chesty and and she sings with a high larynx and constriction which gives her a shrill timbre that's overly bright. Her "whisper voice" is much more balanced. That whole way of singing is really not healthy so the more she does that, the more damage will happen. I think the problem is very technical even though she has nodules. But it would be making nodules worse because it's such an abusive mode of phonation.

In my opinion I think the change that we hear is based on her rushing " to finish the song." I've noticed when she does take her time on some songs it sounds like what we are used to hearing. Idk. Maybe her nodules are more prominent now. Who knows. Well, there are plenty of opera and Broadways singers older than her, who can hit their high notes and hold belts effortlessly without straining or losing the momentum.But ofc, plenty of singers DO lose their voice, and they adjust their songs likewise. She won't. Or at least she doesn't as often as she could. I am actually glad she has said she's not gonna tour anymore while Covid is still active and ongoing, because I think they will aid her voice greatly as she doesn't have to worry about over-straining it anymore. I don't think there is anything wrong with her voice changing, but I wish she embrace it. And relearn vocal techniques if need be so she can sound more smooth. Some lambs are pissed off when I write that the Daydream era was her best vocally. It is not just about the high mixed belts. The great and pleasure singing based on LEGATO singing even in pop music too. She lost her legato after 1996 because of her nodules (instead of "just knooowing the one that i needeeeeed" this is "just-kno-wing-the-one-that-i-ne-e-ed-e-e-d". She could sang her add off after 1996 but technically not on that level like before (the level is still VERY HIGH compared to other singers and her musicality has always been fantastic). It’s all about the effect that she uses in production when she do the live from home and the new song that released in 2020-2022 I really don’t like (I mean I like the song but I don’t like her sound)it because of the effect that make her sound like girl-ish in production that’s why I don’t want the live from home or the butterfly lounge that she gonna do because she isn’t going to tour when I read that news I was like going to cry because I always listen to the live performance it’s rather than the studio ver. I personally think in the big energy remix she’s not able to have that same vocal flexibility/elasticity , when she jumps back and forth with the notes in the beginning of “when you walk by…” and the vocal run to “inside” sounds like she is struggling and straining to reach the same notes as the original. The auto tune or touch up just amplifies the struggle. It would have been better if she modified the notes or made new verses entirely. My favorite part is how she sang “sweet, sweet”. Additionally, I think the roof would have sounded better with Brandy at the forefront and Mariah being a supporting vocalist.

I agree with everyone her voice has changed but it has changed for the better IF SHE ALLOWS IT TO CHANGE if tht makes sense. I think she set a standard for herself and everyone else so it’s hard for her To live it down and after all that backlash fir half of her career I think she hides behind her image sometimes but I honestly believe if she had a vocal coach she trusted or knows her voice or won’t give her what she wants to hear because she Mariah Carey it’ll do wonders. Sorry but not sorry, she can't sing LIVE at all anymore and hasn't been able to do so for many years now. Yes she hit her prime and her voice and the astronomical vocals and the range, the octaves never achieved by another singer have come and gone. I simply have never been a fan of Mariah's, she's too 'ridiculous' in her diva demands for me however I give her huge props and kudos for her acting performance in the Movie Precious as the Social Worker...she was brilliant, other than that...I'm sorry her voice is no longer at the range we're accustomed too, yes she's getting older like the rest of us and there are indeed vocal talents all over the world who've aged and improved....all the old rock bands are amazing now, their voices still resonate their talent, examples: Moody Blues, Chicago, The Stones of course, list goes on, female singers: Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and the very BEST PINK!!!!! I'm done with Mariah's inability to keep it real and admit she can no longer carry a tune in the manner for which she once did...just own it Mariah. Those paying for her concert here in Toronto in December of this year will be paying for auto tune and lip syncing and that's about it. Good luck with that!

It really annoys me when people go around posting about "too bad she can't sing anymore" or "her voice was so good then but now it's ruined," or whatever other irrelevant expression of pettiness. Differences between voice then and her voice now do not matter. She sang what she sang. She wrote it, she recorded it, she performed it live, and those live performances themselves are recorded so you can watch them whenever you want. Meanwhile, she STILL sounds much better live than most singers you'll hear nowadays, and she's STILL producing hit-worthy music that gets ignored because of silly justifications people have mindlessly absorbed from FB (or wherever) and the media. Do you go around to videos about van Goh and post about how everything he painted after Starry Night was shit compared to that one? People only get away with saying shit about Mariah's music because she's still alive, but in 100 years, they're gonna look back on this legendary singer-songwriter's whole life and say "it's such a shame how people didn't appreciate her art while she was alive" (as they probably use her vast library of musical gold to shame the artists active in their own era, as humanity will likely always be petty).

I feel that the current case of Mariah is not her voice, but rather the overproduction. She sounded great on those 2020 recordings, even on Save the day (which is for me the last recording of hers without so much overproduction) Apparently they want to give her a much more "girly" voice like in her prime, making her sound dry, nasal and not very fluent. However, she sounds great in The Roof (2022), she still has a bit of nasality but sounds more like her original self, wich is a mature Butterfly.
