I always thought that it was a lack of practice and age. When I saw your comment it made me think like yea something had to happen to damage them, because her range is completely different and with practice that stuff comes back. I hope that whatever happened she’s ok.

although it’s clear one’s voice changes with age, i feel like it’s all about rest. she’s often proved her voice is still able to hit certain notes and do difficult riffs and whatnot if it’s given proper rest and attentions. personally i adore her early 90s sound but i’ve come to like even more her post-butterfly tone, not to talk about emancipation and mc=e2, and also various performances from 2014 to 2019-2020. recently everybody was upset about mariah featuring in the “yes, and?” remix and said she had lost her voice but it’s all nonsense: it’s very much present and still amazing

From my understanding, women’s voices can deepen as they age due to thickening of vocal cords. Another effect of aging on the voice can result in decrease in lung capacity and changing of the larynx. Considering the higher level of usage by professional vocalists, they likely experience even more wear and tear over time. All things considered, I find her technique and over all control of her vocal apparatus impressive considering she’s nearing 60 (55 to be exact)…

I think it’s multifaceted; the voice literally grows physically bigger with age, lowering the pitch. Vocal cords vibrate, especially fast when you sing a high note. This leads to natural wear and tear over the decades. Mariah is a generous performer, so has used her voice more than most will. Lastly, she has nodules (small callouses on the vocal chords) which seem to have caused her upper belts to sound raspy / grainy, as the seal between her chords is not perfect (due to the nodules) which allows air to pass through and create rasp.
