This was the first Super Bowl after 9/11, the flag from ground zero is shown with first responders. She was an interesting pick to sing the anthem because she had just come off of a movie that bombed and a soundtrack/album that didn’t do as well as her previous records (it was released on 9/11). Tabloids were brutal and relentless when she was hospitalized for emotional/physical exhaustion; But she gathered herself, didn’t let all the noise keep her down and then they tapped her to sing the anthem for a country that had experienced its most traumatizing event in its history. I watched this live as a kid and cried. It was the perfect fit.

Although Whitney's version is incredible (even though it was lip synced, but who cares? Is not like she couldn't do it live) Mariah's has cultural significance. Mariah Carey's OST Glitter flopped because it was released in September 11, 2001, Jlo had stolen a sample of a song for the lead single Lovernoy and then she stole another song from her and even used the same artist ft in Mariahs (you should check them out. Jlo's is I'm real murder Remix and Mariah's is called If we, both featured JaRule and the was confirmed that she plagiarized the song with help of Mariahs abusuve ex husband, afterr that she had her mental breakdown , was hospitalized and diagnosed with type 2 Bipolar disorder. The directives of Super ball needed somebody to sing the anthem and lift people's spirits, this was the first big event with thousands of people in a single place after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Considering everything Mariah went through in that era she was perfect to inspire safety with her magnificent voice. When she hit the whistle people screamed like crazy, a friend of my mothers was there and he said that many people were crying, actually balling, so many had lost loved ones and they were going to loose more in the middle east,she was in charge of making people feel safe again and she nailed it. Mariahs version 8s so elegant, regal and Whitney's was raw, powerful and amazing
