Hate to break it to you, but she’s lip-syncing. It’s pretty convincing, but there are too many telltale signs. The whole purpose of a performance like this is to fool the average viewer (no offence); however, to most trained audio professionals, it would be clear as day that she's miming to a prerecorded track. For example, at 3:24, she lifts her head away from the dynamic mic as part of the performance, yet there’s no drop in volume or change in proximity effect when she lowers it again - a classic sign of a prerecorded track. Then, immediately after, at 3:30, she drops her head, looking down at her feet, and again, there’s no change in mic response. They’ve swapped certain parts with alternate studio takes to make it seem like she’s singing live, but it’s mostly the same compared to the official release.

Yes this is an official music video of Hero, there was an original music video they came up with which was a black & white where she was singing alone but Mariah felt it was boring so they used a live footage with her fans genuine reaction and dubbed it. If you listen closely to the live unedited version of this performance and the official album version, you’ll notice the difference.

I'll never forget when I driving home at night during a tough time in my life. I became stuck in a vortex of deeply negative and suicidal thoughts. I wanted to crash my car and end it. Meanwhile, I was tuning out the radio this entire time, until suddenly this song came on. I hung on to every word. I also put a little more effort to get home safely.
