Have you ever heard of the Pomaks? This fascinating community lives in the heart of Bulgaria and consists of unique Slavic Muslims. In this video, I introduce you to their remarkable history, culture and traditions, which have remained hidden for centuries.
We embark on a journey to picturesque villages where the Pomaks have preserved their unique heritage. We meet local residents who will share their stories and experiences with us. We will look at their colorful costumes, traditions and unique rituals that have survived for centuries.
But that's not all! We will also confront the modern life of the Pomaks and their efforts to preserve their identity in today's world. We'll discover how the fusion of Slavic heritage and Islam affects their daily lives, as well as how the Poamaks engage in intercultural dialogue.

Pracuję z chłopakami/pomakami na codzień. Nie macie pojęcia ile polskich słów występuje w ,,pomackim". Któregoś razu, zamawialiśmy kebsa w Niemczech. Pomacki kierownik wysłał pracownika po w/w kebsy, a nas zapytał po niemiecku(tak się na ogół porozumiewaliśmy), jakie chcemy mięso. Odpowiedziałem po niemiecku że kurczak. Po pomacku brzmiało to tak: ,,meso z kokoszki" 😊

In Republic Macedonia they are called Torbeshi . When they build a new house they put orthodoh Icon in the foundation .

How do you think orthodox icon, which, as in a name is out of orthodox Catholic Church, corresponds with their religion? I believe you could come to wrong conclusion since Pomaks are Muslims as it’s clearly shown in the film 🧐 Are Torbeshi orthodox?

@ It is very sensitive matter . It was long time hidden habit . They have traditionally that habit in memory of old tradition when they were Cristian . What is wrong with it . Religion is religion ! They were forcibly muslimised . Their old time houses were built with that habit since Othomans came secretly . Time by time , when they were making a new house , have found the icon of tradition of forefathers . It is looking like the macedonians are forcibly made Romans , Othomans , Greek ,Bulgar and Serbian as they lost their tradition when Romans came and territory Macedonia is still on a bid . Do you think that we don't have sacred traditional places in hight mountain where you can find real macedonian ornamentation and folklore tradition ? That is why we are preserved . And granted at last with that "North" in front of our name of the country at last ! Not to be persuade by anyone , anymore .

This report reveals many realities that will remain unnoticed by most viewers - probably by the author of the report himself. First of all, it must be said that the "Pomaks" are not a nation. Such a nation or nationality does not exist historically. The Ottoman archives clearly show that these were Islamicized Bulgarians. These people speak only Bulgarian and have never historically spoken any other language. The only difference with other Bulgarians is religion. It must be said that Ribnovo is not representative of all Pomaks in Bulgaria. More Pomacs are not even called Pomacs and consider this word an insult - they are called Bulgarian-Mohammedans, and they do not like this word either. The difference in religion cannot make another nation. The guy with the mercedes tried very unsuccessfully to push some civil war discourse which is not true. The communists changed the names of Muslims in Bulgaria to Slavic ones. However, this is a practice of the communists for ethno-homogenization everywhere in the Balkans - no matter if you are Christian or Muslim. Bulgarian names have been deleted and banned in Greece, and in the former Yugoslavia (Serbia and North Macedonia) even today, Bulgarians do not have the right to use their Bulgarian names. The issue is already at the state level and part of the negotiation process of these countries with the EU. This boy made himself both a victim and a hero in an extremely unargued way - he couldn't explain what he meant. However, this report shows the entire sham of the so-called "culture" and the identity confusion in the heads of these people. The girl says they are few Turks, the boy says we have nothing to do with Turks. In reality, more young people go to big cities and integrate into modern life, the rest is just a show - shalwars with nike sneakers :))). As a person from this community, I can say that the understanding within the city is that only the illiterate and the unsuccessful stay in the city. The lack of successful implementation in modern life is justified by the name "Mustafa" - the Bulgarian Christians are to blame. The best thing about this report is that it showed the total emancipation of women. For older women, their lives are spent in labor and sexual exploitation - without the right to life fulfillment outside the interests of men. This movie is over. To break away from the chains of the community these people simply emigrate so they can freely live as they want. Most young do not return. Even if they come back, especially the women, they can no longer be controlled. This can be seen in the behavior of young people. The bottom line is that Islam is not compatible with modern life. No religion or "tradition" can resist the urges of youth and life. Mustafa is doomed not only to a lack of life fulfillment, hidden behind the car, but also to a family one. There, perhaps the Bulgarian Christians will not be to blame, who do not even know where this small town is and do not even care. This leads to identity wandering in the heads of these people - Bulgarians, Turks, Arabs, Pomacs - the result is a kitsch that presents itself as a unique culture. A culture we all know isn't real.

To dołącz do nas. Co mają Słowianie do Chrześcijaństwa które jest religią z bliskiego wschodu, przyjętą tylko dlatego bo jakiś król się ochrzcił 1000 lat temu, by lepiej stać politycznie. Przynajmniej teologia Islamu trzyma się sensu. Wiesz ze trójca święta została wykombinowana w Soborze Nicejskim przez cesarza Konstantyna w 325 po Chrystusie, mimo sprzeciwu kapłanów? W dzisiejszym miescie Iznik nadal stoi świątynia w której się odbył.

Nie do końca jest prawda że Bułgarzy nie lubią Pomakow, przeciez my jesteśmy jeden naród. Dla mnie największy problem wśród tych ludzi jest że nie chcą się ingerować wśród reszta narodu. Ich myślenie jest inne. Ja mam dużo przyjaciółmi pomak. Np kobieta lub facet nie mogą brać ślub z innymi ludźmi poza grupa Pomakow. Nawet bułgarski Turków inne życie mają (bardziej nowoczesne myślenie mają). Można zobaczyć w filmie jak kobieta się traktuje.. dla nich religia jest najważniejsze.

Dla mnie społeczeństwa zdominowane przez religię się zatrzymują w rozwoju. Przywódcom, którzy sami się zatrzymali myślowo, nie zależy na tym by ludzie rozumieli świat, lepiej by wierzyli w głoszone słowo, które jest mocno radykalne w przekazie.

Islam is not a problem here, it’s a characteristic. When it comes to unemployment, most of them travel to west countries to earn better (which is explained in the film), the roads were fixed this year. I focused on the culture, because I find it interesting, it’s exceptional and it’s only there - it’s worth mentioning I never meet Islam like this even tho I travelled to a lot of Muslim countries
