Dear Marianne, your videos are always extremely wholesome, peaceful, aesthetic and full of love for what you do. I deeply appreciate the time and effort that goes into making these on top of making your art. Especially since you truly strive to let orhers profit from your knowledge, your experiences and your mistakes! I love that you highlighted the little „errors“ this time. It‘s so important to show that the creative process and the playfulness are the main thing, not a picture-perfect outcome. As I create mixed-media collages in my free time, I absolutely adore the vintage look of your spread and am taking some great ideas from it, especially the shellack! Thank you for this beautiful video! Miriam from Germany

Your work is stunning!! These are some of the flowers on my list of potentially fun ones to paint: flax flowers or chicory (similar in color), also bluebells, black hollyhocks (they have really pretty undertones), foxgloves, bearded iris (ruffles!), lisianthus, and pink poppies.

Your work is amazing! I have always wanted to paint in a sketchbook, and after watching a few of your videos, I now know where to start! Can you use acrylic paints instead of oil over the shellac?
@MarianneVanderDussen
@MarianneVanderDussen 5 ай бұрын
Great news about acrylic paint is that you don’t actually need to use shellac! That’s just a precaution for the oil since the oil will seep into the pages and turn them yellow. If you’re using acrylic on ink toned paper, you can just paint directly onto it!

Hi Marianne, wonderful painting and sketchbook spread. The video is also excellent, thanks so much for producing it. A question for you, if I may. How long do you have to leave the spread open to dry, before you can close the book without the pages sticking together?
@MarianneVanderDussen
@MarianneVanderDussen Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Joy! I think I left this spread open for 5 days, and I used quick dry titanium white so it was probably fine after 36 hours but I left it open and checked it multiple times before closing just to be sure 🥰 the shellac won’t stick to itself, it’s just the oil!

This book is going to be focused on oil, BUT I am currently editing my peony painting course in acrylic that will also be released to KZbin as a short timelapse in case you just wanted to watch the process! You may have already seen this too but I also have an acrylic sketchbook tutorial out, though it’s a different style. If you prefer the look of this book, you can do everything the exact same as in this tutorial, but you can skip the shellac unless you wanted to give it a whirl. How long for oil to dry?
@MarianneVanderDussen
@MarianneVanderDussen Жыл бұрын
Great question! It depends on a number of factors, including humidity, but mine typically dries in 1-2 days, because I paint in thin layers, I use a fast dry titanium white (it's a special formula from M.Graham & Co.), and if I need it to dry even faster I use just a touch of liquin in the paint to speed it up.

First, let me say that seeing your transparency of making mistakes and then deciding to work out a solution publicly was VERY refreshing, especially for those of us perfectionists who have gone as far as to remove pages from sketchbooks for the silliest of errors. ...something I would later come to regret, as they often resulted in some of the best lessons learned, or even new techniques discovered that would later be used on purpose! So, kudos to you for your honesty in sharing the normalcy of all of our imperfections and not just get frustrated and 'doldrumy' about them, but rather face them, embrace them, and try to find a solution. Good on you! Second, have you thought of doing Scottish thistles? Maybe in conjunction with Scottish heather? I think the strength of the lines of the thorns against the softness of the heather would make for a beautiful pairing! Finally, I've been making acrylic "ink" by watering down my fluid paints (I have SO many and was trying to be frugal), but a bunch of my kids (who are coming for my birthday in another week) are actually getting me new art supplies... among them a set of Liquitex Transparent inks! YAY!
