I think stand up comedy isn't for her. It looks, sounds, and feels like she is naturally an energetic person and what she was doing on stage is close to what she does in normal conversation. I think she would be much funnier in a cook out where the jokes come out smoothly and naturally. Here it seems forced and it lacks something. My point is she would be a great person to hang out with because she has a vibrant vibe but this doesn't suit her.

Great stage presence and excellent stealth punchlines, but she's leaning a bit much on her energy to carry her, especially in the weak spots. Her material's good, her jokes are stellar, and her transitions are magnificent (speed + control = gold), but the writing's a tad thin. Just a tad though. Otherwise, she's got what it takes and I look forward to seeing lots more from her.
@34khayes

Genuine curiosity: What is the difference between material, jokes, and the writing in standup such that 2 can be good and one weak?
@cdxn00
@cdxn00 5 жыл бұрын
OK, Connor!
@Theomite
@Theomite 5 жыл бұрын
@@34khayes Good question. Okay, it works like this: Material is pretty loose: it can be subject matter, ideas, stuff you write on a napkin. Basically it's the seed for whatever you want to talk about, and whether its strong enough to follow up. Standards for this can be pretty fluid as you can take "airline food" and make it funny with the right writing or jokes. Jokes are the standard sort of architecture for telling comedy: setup and punchline. What you do with either is up to you, and if you want to play around with the space in between the setup and punchline depends on you. Comics like Rhea Butcher and Nikki Glaser enjoy putting little asides in their jokes before they get to the punchline to add punch. Jokes are simple enough that you can deliver them differently according to your personality/delivery. See that round table where Seinfeld demonstrated how he'd tell one of Louis CK's jokes. The writing on the other hand is the meat; it's the actual viscera that makes up the comedy itself. This part relies entirely on your technical proficiency. This is the part you have to stay focused on regardless of your personality, and you may even have to temper your personality to stay on target. It's the details of the comedy you're going to tell and how you're going to tell it, and you can't skimp on it. So, in Faustin's case, she has good material (dating a Connor, etc.), and she has great jokes with great punchlines. AND--and this is very important--she has excellent stage presence and energy and she can REALLY hammer a weaker joke or boost underwhelming material with her personality. But she doesn't have much to say in that material and jokes: she brings up funny stuff, tells a few jokes about it, and then it kind of peter's out. She's got the material, comes up with a few jokes, and then uses her energy to carry it. But that's not a good strategy overall because it means that the overall set is going to fluctuate in quality between the parts with the most jokes vs. the least jokes. This is only a 5-10 minute set, but writing a set is a bit like composing an opera or symphony; there are movements with their own tone, pace, complexity and purpose, and even if one movement sounds completely different than another, they have to be organically connected to each other so that you can listen and say "yeah, that's part of the same thing." So in closing, my critique of Faustin is that she doesn't flesh out enough of her writing ON the material she chooses. If she fleshes it out more, she'll have more jokes that flow into each other, and she can regulate her energy more efficiently, so her bombast can be used for crescendo instead of tempo.

@izzy B no one is worked up. Look at the last line I wrote. That should tell you I'm other worked up. Just don't tell a whole race they should try to look like one person, especially when that person has fake hair on. Ffs
