Beautiful Lithuanian hymn devoted to Mother Mary, asking her to protect Lithuania from the "horrible enemy" (SOviet Russia). In 1991 their prayers were finally answered. Lithuania was FREE !

I understand your sentiment, but this song, as it was created, was not devoted to requesting protection from the Soviet Union, since the Soviet Union had nothing to do with Lithuania when the song was created. The lyrics were written by Mairionis (1862-1932) and the music created by Česlovas Sasnauskas (1867-1916)... The occupation of Lithuania was "formalized" in August of 1940. The only connection between the song and the Soviet Union is based on interpretation. The line "Have mercy on us poor sinners - defend us from the powerful/horrible enemy" can refer to the Nazis that wiped out most of our Jewish culture, the Soviets, the current Russian regime, and/or our personal demons. Not just the Soviets..
