I think thats definitely it. Rennala was of the full moon which is the same as rannis dark moon but it reflects the light of the sun (or tree in this case) symbolizing her compromise of ideals and beliefs when marrying radagon. Oh my god Fia’s ending creating dark souls makes so much sense when you think about how her ending turns the golden haze of the erdtree into the grey fog wall of dark souls.
@fakename46832 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to share a few thoughts in the episode. 1) A possible explanation for the ants (and the Leonine Misbegotten) is that they are eating/picking items as they are shed from the Erd Tree. The map description for the Deeproot Depths states "At the very depths of the Erdtree's majestic roots lies the source of the Ainsel and the Siofra rivers. Here too begins the network of Greattree roots that spread throughout the Lands Between." It's possible that the Numen runes are from either Marika or Radagon. The Scarseals and Soreseals are usually found in water or near a cave with water. 2) It is vaguely hinted that Melina was not born, but birthed from the Erd Tree itself (there are tree murals that show people/gods growing on the tree and the dialogue from Boc's quest). If so, it may be that Marika was also grown form the Erd Tree/Greattree. I think this also go a long way of explaining why Radagon and the Gloam Eyed queen just appearing without a history/genealogy, as it wouldn't exist. It also works with the iconography of the Elden Ring as Marika almost appears like she is sprouting from Elden Ring.

This might be the best video you two have done on Elden Ring so far! One of the best analyses on this channel. The point about Marika’s hatred and fear of death being all a reaction to the mistakes of the Eternal Cities is the first time I’ve seen anyone make that observation, and the Koschei comparison is very apt! Some thoughts on a few aspects: There was actually an ending at one point where Marika could be replaced, there’s cut dialogue left in the game where Miquella takes Marika’s place as the host of the Elden Ring and creates his own Order. While no longer present in the current version of the game, it doesn’t really conflict with the rest of it, and confirms two things - Marika can be replaced as host deity, and Miquella’s not actually opposed to the Greater Will and Order as a whole, just his mother’s Golden Order. Marika being able to become the host of the Elden Ring partially due to geographic proximity raises an important question. Since Placidusax’s god was the previous host of the Elden Ring (as he, their consort, is Elden Lord), I’m curious what the geographic location of Farum Azula originally was. Maybe it too was located near that impact crater? This theory of Marika being the Silver Tear Lord the Nox were trying to create is…interesting. The main reason I don’t quite buy it is that the Nox were opposed to the Greater Will, so it doesn’t make all that sense to me for them to make something that could be an Empyrean for it. Not to mention she is called a Nox or Numen, and those are a type of humans rather than these silver homunculi. That is the most fascinating theory about why Placidusax’s body is in the way it is. As I indicated earlier though, Placidusax is Elden Lord and had a different god who he’s waiting the return of, so I’m 99% sure he wasn’t the host of the Elden Ring in his time. I’m convinced that the soulless demigods are both other demigods who died in the Night of the Black Knives and the members of the Golden Lineage between Godwyn and Godrick. The demigods don’t seem to age after reaching adulthood, and yet everyone descended from Godwyn is totally missing from the game save for his extremely distant descendant Godrick (who may as well just be a normal human). Don’t think Godwyn is designed to look like the basilisks, rather I think they redesigned the basilisks to reflect Godwyn’s appearance. The theory that Marika’s Tarnished plan was an answer to Those Who Live in Death just can’t work unfortunately. Everything we’re told suggests the Night of the Black Knives happened after Godfrey was exiled as the first Tarnished, since Miquella was born after that and Miquella knew Godwyn before his death. It's only briefly mentioned at the end but I do think this is the most tenuous part of the video. Would be very interesting in seeing a video on Goldmask’s ending and where Sophie disagrees with his solution, because to me that feels like the best ending with Ranni’s coming in second. The problem with Ranni’s ending to me is that it feels like (plus nearly all of the problems present in the world, as this video itself poitns out, are more Marika’s fault than the Greater Will’s).
@davideo72862 жыл бұрын
Really great video, it's always fun to listen to the two of you! One thing I wanted to discuss was the other "corpse" of Godwyn under Stormveil. Like Sophie mentioned, then there are several occurrences throughout the game where where his influence through death manifests itself. In places like the catacombs with the tendrill like trees that also have his eyes, the crabs with the resemblance to his face and eyes as well, and like Sophie mentioned the basilisks sharing similarities; which are reminiscent of Dark Souls' Nito/basilisk connections. I Haven't seen it mentioned before But the game implies to me that while Godwyn's physical body is placed under Leyndel, the other "corpse" under Stormveil marks the spot the assassination took place. Stormveil castle is uniquely cursed with deathblight as seen by the thorns burrowing through the actual castle. Rogier calls the corpse there, "a relic of that dire plot." I initially thought it was made of stone or tree but if you attack it it bleeds. There's also pretty much his whole corpse Is under Stormveil as well but a lot of it is obscured by rubble. With a torch out or some glowing stones you can see the there's much more to it in that location than just a face. It seems that the assassination occurred in Stormviel and afterwards his body was taken for tree burial. The other corpse left behind curses the castle and the spot the ritual took place. This is all pre Shattering , meaning that godrick has not laid claim to the castle yet. Godfrey long ago defeated the Stormlord and continued south and took Castle Mourne. With him becoming Elden Lord he would not need to rule Stormveil and Limgrave alone and may have given the castle to his son Godwyn, which would put Godwyn in Stormveil when the assassination occurs. It's also just south of Carian Manor for Ranni to send her riders to Stormveil while she went east to the Divine Tower for her part.

Its notable to me that Godfrey comes from the badlands, or part of the lands outside, Radagon has some unclear ties to the Giants, what could be attributed to "the lands above," Marika likely comes from "The Lands Below", and then Rennala is actually the one directly tied to The Lands Between. Just further deepens the Tragedy of her story(as much as not obtaining that level of royalty can be considered tragedy of course) and continues to expose various levels of plotting on Marika's part.

I think where Melina/GEQ fits into this is that she *is* the rune of death, in the same sense that Marika is the Elden Ring. I think when Melina is talking about her "mother," she's not talking about Marika, she's talking about the Elden Ring itself. Basically, I think the timeline went like this: 1. Marika removes death from the elden ring and just throws it out initially 2. The rune of death becomes/is acquired by the Gloam-Eyed-Queen who starts her campaign of militant atheism 3. Marika goes "Oh shit" and sends Maliketh to steal back the Rune of Death and eat it 4. Maliketh does that, without the rune the Gloam eyed Queen is little more than a stray consciousness without memories or purpose 5?. Ranni kills herself, but in casting off her own form she allows Melina to appropriate it for herself

Totally agree that Marika is a mimic. There is cut content regarding a quest with a Silver Tear who would have lived within our body. An item from that quest noted that “Asimi” (the silver tear) grants strength to its “host”. Asimi fusing with the player and granting us strength fits perfectly with Marika’s lingering words to Radagon: “Thou’rt yet to become me. Thou'rt yet to become a god.” This was the moment just before Marika fused with Radagon just as Asimi would have fused with the player.

My theory comes from “The Beast Eye” which we receive from Gurranq, aka Maliketh the Black Blade. I believe this eye belonged to the Gloam Eyed Queen aka Marika the Eternal. The short version is that judging from Iji and Ranni’s dialogue, we know that when each Empyrean are chosen by their two fingers, they are given a shadow that will turn into a horrid curse should they ever betray the Greater Will. How do they know this? They must’ve seen it happen. The only other recorded Empyrean with a shadow in history is Marika and when she began to plot against the Greater Will(Enia mentioning her trespass), I believe Maliketh activated his kill switch and used Destined Death against her hence why she’s crucified with a spear bearing similar traits to the power of his Black Blade(It channels the same brilliance of the black flame and Blaidd’s eyes glow red at the end of Ranni’s questline, possibly explaining the red hue). It would explain why her corpse is missing her left eye, why the eye has a claw mark, and is surrounded by Marika’s stony flesh. Another question I asked myself is just how Maliketh was able to possess or lock away the Rune of Death if he’s just a shadowbound and not a demigod? The answer is simple, he sealed Marika inside him who actually was a vessel for the Rune of Death. This also explains the diminished power of the Godskins since they received their power from her, the Queen of Death and also why Hewg is tasked with creating God slaying weapons for her. Maliketh only channels the same power from his Black Blade which is made from Marika’s torn half that leads to her missing eye where I speculate the stone covered Beast Eye/Gloam Eye originated from(keep in mind at which side of her face). Her corpse is likely dead since it’s impaled, her other half being sealed into Maliketh, meaning the Beast Eye that writhes could be the only part of her that still “alive”. Ew. Melina reveals to have the same eye, on the same side of her face in the lord of frenzy ending. Her previously Golden Eye loses its color because the Golden Order is no more and Grace is gone. Also interesting to note is that her Blade of Calling is fashioned after a Godskin Peeler.
@HoneyDoll8942 жыл бұрын
So i'm pretty sure that when maliketh says that marika betrayed him, was what happened after the black knives plot. Because prior to that the rune of death wasn't in maliketh's body, it was his sword. and its then that the black knives manage to steal a bit of it, and then marika punishes maliketh for it, and to me its a bit unclear if maliketh himself or marika forces it, but the rune of death goes inside maliketh's body now. That's why he stabs himself in the fight, saying that the rune of death will "become my sword once more". I think when the stealing death thing happened is when maliketh realized that marika wasn't interested him in any other way than just using him as a tool, and she seems to have punished him quite heavily afterwards with the whole deathroot thing. Another thing which i'm not quite sure about, but it seems that the elden ring was given multiple times to civilizations. The farum azula people seem to be the first ones who got it, as there are lore bits that state that having five fingers was a symbol of intelligence "granted to" them

Marika had something to do with the Erdtree's creation? I thought the Elden Ring/Elden Beast crashed into The Crucible which sprouted the Erdtree.
@sophie.m.pilbeam2 жыл бұрын
We don't 100% know. The reason we're going with that is down to three things: 1) Godfrey and his knights encountered the Crucible, and the Crucible is said to be the "primordial form" of the Erdtree. If we take that to mean that the Crucible became / created the Erdtree, then Godfrey & co were around before the Erdtree grew. Contact with the Crucible also creates the Misbegotten, and there's no Misbegotten in the prior civilisations, which also suggests there's no Crucible contact pre-Golden Order. However, it's entirely possible that the Crucible *is* something distinct from the Erdtree, and they just found the Crucible after the Erdtree was already growing. I don't think that's ruled out, but I am going to lean toward Marika's involvement due to the next two points, especially the third one. 2) The Eternal Cities and Farum Azula were ruled over by the Greater Will, but there's no Erdtree growth there (apart from a single phantom tree in Nokstella) and they don't use it as a design motif anywhere. That suggests the Greater Will's presence there predated the Erdtree existing, or at least that the Erdtree was insignificant at the time. The Nameless City has Erdtree growth, but it's full of Golden Order interference (Siluria, Godwyn, gargoyles) and not a "control group" like the others. 3) Marika is obsessed with protecting and nurturing the Erdtree, and talks about her new world as the "Age of the Erdtree", as if it didn't matter / exist before (which seems likely, since the other civilisations don't appear to acknowledge it).She also talks about creating "an epoch glistening with life", which suggests (but not definitively) she's messing with the Crucible, since that's repeatedly called the source of life. Miquella, who's presented as trying to address the flaws in Marika's Golden Order, also tries to grow his own Erdtree, which suggests (again, not definitively) that he's following in her footsteps by doing what she did. So my take on it is either that Marika literally shaped the Erdtree from the Crucible (which explains why her husband's followers had direct contact with it, and the Lands Between get cursed by the Misbegotten as punishment) OR she found a less powerful version of it that she helped grow into the huge thing we have now. Either way, I'd say it's definitely "her" tree in some way. DLC / sequels might introduce new information, of course.

Also the expanded elden ring rune in FA - could that be the elden ring before flame was taken out? Like maybe the golden order envoys used to be a whole hand, but then Placidusax et al took out flame the same way Marika took out death, and that vestigial remnant became frenzied flame. It just bugs me that the frenzied flame uses a finger representative the same way the golden order does. I realize it's probably from an earlier version of the plot.

I still don't get why a world without death needs Empyrean heirs. I think Marika and the Greater Will have been have been plotting against each other from the beginning. Neither can directly move against the other without curtailing their own power. Godwyn's death didn't drive Marika to the brink. True believer Godwyn was just the first casualty in Marika's war against the Greater Will.
@lordanonimmo76992 жыл бұрын
Probably because no matter what a age will end naturally,therr will be divisions and adiministration problems,rivals to Marika will be formed and one day will take power from her in someway. So its better renovate the empyreans to always guarantee the greater will stays in power.
@gergelymacsai37762 жыл бұрын
I believe that the Greater Will likes to change its avatars on colonized worlds from time to time, perhaps precisely because of what happens to Marika: she figures out the whole parasitic deal and wants to have none of it. Free will can't exist with a Greater Will around, not truly, and lesser beings will inevitably strive for getting rid of a cosmic overlord. The Gloam Eyed Queen should have been the replacement, quite an early one at that, but with her gone and Death removed, perhaps it was Godwyn the true believer as you say up next. Since it is implied that Marika secretly didn't like Godwyn despite keeping up pretenses as to the opposite (hell, I don't think she liked any of her children from Godfrey), it makes sense for her to be involved in a plot to kill him. Maybe what pushed her over the brink wasn't that Godwyn died but that he didn't truly die and is in a horrid state between life and death; and of course the fact that Ranni played her to get out of her situation entirely.
@soarel3252 жыл бұрын
@@gergelymacsai3776 As far as we can tell the only people the Greater Will controls or influences the will of are the Empyreans it wants to succeed the current host/avatar. Not to mention it only really cares that its Order is allowed to proliferate, not what people do with it - it’s not so much a “cosmic overlord” robbing people of free will as much as it is like a corporate body letting its self-owned stores operate however they want so long as they keep the store running and profits flowing in.

@@sophie.m.pilbeam it could very well be the case imo too, because thinking about it the only outer influence is in placidusax area where time stops, and coincidentally it is also the only place where Miquellas needle works(it is also possible that the other outer God that has cursed miquella is that one specifically since is body stopped aging, and could potentially explain miquellas talent for growing giant trees with his blood since the caduceus similarity still stands I think).Whereas in leyndell especially there is at least another outer God in the basement waiting to overthrow the greater will. That fits with that argument that removing pieces from the original was a not so great idea after all.🤷🏻♀️

I came for lore and got a psychological profiling of Marika. Noice
@aaronwinrock81642 жыл бұрын
I have a fun theory. Hmm a Mother Goddess who is from a Race of people from another world whose symbol is a Glowing Tree, Light and Life. I always theorized that Izalith was Gwynavere's mother, whats Izaliths symbol? Tree roots and life, whats Gwyns symbol? the Sun and light. Gwynavere is famous for having lots of kids and probablyhusbands, who has lots of kids and atleasttwo husbands? Marika... where did Gwynavere go? she left no one knows. Where is Marika and her long lived golden haired people from? no one knows. What do sites of Grace look like? Humanity Sprites made of Light. Marika is Gwynavere confirmed. Okay hear me out I know that none of that explains the Greater Will but... like the First Flame? Perhaps when a God is born between two different fundamental laws of reality then the universe compensates by creating an Outer God to match? I know, i know probably not but its fun to think about atleast... Atleast we get closures on whatever happened to Gwynavere. unless Gwyndolin and Gwynavere were like Radagon and Marika just being two aspects of the same being doin their own things. Radagon had red hair, Gwynavere has red hair, Gwyndolin is Platinum blonde ((actually white but they say blonde alot in anime when they clearly have white hair so w.e)), Marika is Blonde.... Its definitely not the case and probably just Miyazaki carrying over ideas he resonates with but still. You cant deny the parallels... he loves his parallels...

Why would the black knifes Numens kill Godwyn in Ranni's plot if they were close, probably servants of Marika? That's a part of the plot I don't understand, because of that I assumed that his death was part of Marika's plan to defy the Golden Order and corrupt it from inside with death
@sophie.m.pilbeam2 жыл бұрын
I'm taking "close ties" to mean that they're all Numen, and that the line there to strengthen the Marika / Underground / Death connection. Marika's plan is vaguely alluded to as having something to do with the Tanished being stuck in eternal conflict (I still don't quite understand what her endgame is), but not Godwyn's murder, which is Ranni's doing.
@WAR36002 жыл бұрын
@@sophie.m.pilbeam yes, you probably is right, but just one more thing I remember is that one Black Knife is guarding Marika chamber when we get there, once again giving me the impression that they serve her but I don't know for sure if this has any basis. Anyway, you as always are miles ahead on discovering the lore of those games so thanks! I am looking forward to see a video about the Farm Azula because that place is so confusing, I honestly don't understand much about it
@sophie.m.pilbeam2 жыл бұрын
@@WAR3600 I think that Black Knife probably killed all the dead Finger Readers on the bridge. It gets confusing because the Fingers have their own assassins who use red-black flame and look like Blaidd (I thought they *were* Blaidd for ages), plus the confessor ones. We have two episodes recorded that we're editing now. One is on Radagon and Imperfection (like how this is on Marika and Death), and the other is about artificial life. I want to talk about Farum Azula but, like you said, it's very confusing, so I'm wondering if we'll learn more through a DLC.

Somewhere someone is not completely telling the truth. either Marika is not a Numen or the fact that they are seldom born (that they don't have babies often.) is a lie cause Marika has a ton of offspring.

A scar is worse than an open sore? What kind of reasoning is that?
@SinclairLore Жыл бұрын
"Sores heal but scars stay there" was my reasoning. But yeah, clearly a sore hurts more.
@necromanticer169 Жыл бұрын
@Sinclair Lore Okay, you're taking sore as implicitly recoverable. I thought the scar was supposed to be a faded scar from the same source as that sore. A sore that did heal but didn't leave; it faded into a scar. It's a more direct escalation if you consider the sore is the open, recovering stage of a wound while the scar that is left is the closed, recovered wound. One is aggravated and energetic while the other is still present, but explicitly not active or changing. One state is ephemeral/contemporary and powerful; the other state is permanent and subdued. Fire and cold... 🤷♂️
