First version. The singer is Doug Irvine (79/80 in the band). Fish change the lyrics and rename the song like "Snow Angel". Note: Part of the song is used finally in "Forgotten Sons".

Yes I hear forgotten sons in the end. Thank you so much for sending me this rare gem. you must have some connection somewhere to have gotten this. You can hear the lack of refinement they had in their playing back in those days. I am a huge Mariiion fish era fan. The new music since the days of "Easter" just does not do it for me. I feel fish needs them and they need fish. I really feel this will happen one day. David Castagna

It was and is Kelly and Rothery that hit the deep angst in my favorite songs. Then either Fish or Hogarth (or both) added an element we continue to love deeply. Thank all of you for the music.

Go find and listen to 'Grendel' (Its on here somewhere) ........ Its presages several of their later pieces. Curiously enough this version of Alice partly presages bits of Grendel. I guess it was sort of a cumulative thing for Marillion when they were setting out.

@@babboon5764 I do know Grendel! I saw it being played live by the Steve Rothery Band, last Autumn. Happy me!! :)

I remember getting my hands on a double tape of these demos / bootlegs ( old D90) from a market near Aylesbury, was totally sold over to the sound ! As for the Fish v Hogarth thing I'm sure there were Irvine v Fish " debates too, Fish was the mic guy during my adolescent phase so I'm more inclined to be partial toward him and his solo start was hampered by EMI which lead to the acidity of Vigil !

The curious thing is that Doug Irvine, 'tho he formed the band with Mick Pointer has been virtually airbrushed out. If you doubt it go see Wikipedia - even there it states 'Fish was the first singer for Marillion'. And how many folk had heard of Mick Pointer for that matter - I'd probably been listening to Marillion for the best part of 3 decades before I heard of either of 'em. There's an interminable squabble around 'Hogarth's not as good as Fish' and 'Fish was the original'. Well now you know. Fish wasn't the original. Ironic innit? For all that, I was gutted when he left and really resented Hogarth for years. But after listening a few times to the live version of 'When I meet God' I've decided actually, the bloke's alright. Picking up on another note of ShadowsKing1976 intro comment (above), where he notes 'Part of this song's used in forgotten sons'. ........ Well, its used in Grendel too. In fact you can pick out several of their later pieces in Grendel (and also a surprising chunk of Genisis as well). If you haven't head Grendel give yourself a treat. You'll find it on You Tube somewhere .... IF you're stuck for a Christmas list suggestion you'll find it on (but only on) Marillion's 'B'Sides' themselves. [**** I should get *commission* for this]! ;-p
