Being a fan of progrock from the 70's I discoceted this band in the early 90's only. Since then time by time I listen to their best ballads. Even I have been in their concert in 2005 Barcelona. Fantastic experience being in a small scenario at 3 mts from the singer and Steve Roherty. The one we never forget.

It is one of the best songs of Marillion. But….. can I give you an advice; don’t stop the music and listen to the whole song first and then give your reaction. This song is to magic to stop it twice. Keep up the good work. Greetz from Holland.

Hi, you two, thanks for sharing tears when there is music of such a quality and beauty going on. And about Marillion? There is a LOT to discover, you have so much joy, so many moments ahead of you, I would envy you if I couldn't say myself having enjoyed them since 40 years now. Seeing them life ususally means 2 and a half hour of AWEsome time spend well. At the end you called for suggesting more bands, like them. I want to recomment you a Scottish 5-piece that had along hibernation in between and are nearly unknown. But try "Pallas" with their song "The Sanctuary". Their material in general is harder, they look like a metal band except the singer, who reminds me of Fergal Sharkey of the Undertones. Enjoy :)

Nice reaction guys. A couple of things then: The name of the band comes from J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion'. The song 'Easter' was written about the Irish uprising during the Easter period of 1916, and guitarist Steve Rothery's solo was recorded as a single take. You take care

Lovely info. I would add that Steve H wrote this song about the Troubles (1960 - 1998), not just the Irish uprising in 1916. Easter, here again - it is a reference to that it has been many, many, many Easters and still there is no peace in Northern Ireland (when it was written). There must come an Easter ("surely now") when this will be over ("when the blind will see"). At least that is how I interpret it going on Steve's own comments about the song.

Saw them live twice in Bremen, on their Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws tours. But i was a big fan of Fish and after he left i bought one more album, and while i still really loved the guitar from Steven Rothery i just was no fan of the new singer. So my tip are songs like "Script for a jesters tear", "Sugar Mice", "Chelsea Monday" and "Misplaced Childhood" .. yes it is in the end just one song, they even announced it on the concert as their last song, and then it was the whole album 😄

Lovely reaction ♥👍 Their name is from the book 'The Silmarillion' by Tolkien. Because of the copyrights they changed it to Marillion. There are loads of great songs to listen to. Check out 'Neverland' (live Out of Season 2009), a great Love song ♥. Or 'Ocean Cloud', a song about a man who rowed across the Atlantic Ocean on his own (18 min 😏...). 'This strange engine' is also great, awesome guitar and vocale (especially at the end...). Fish era: Blind Curve (actually you should listen to the entire album Misplaced Childhood!). The combo: Hotel Hobbies, Warm wet circles and That time of the Night)...

Great reaction, thanks! You can’t go wrong with Marillion. The guitarist, Steve Rothery, is extremely sensitive in his playing. This is from the first album with the new vocalist, Steve Hogarth, after the charismatic singer Fish left the band, you should experience them both. A couple of suggestions with Hogarth: - Neverland (from Marbles) - Invisible man (from Marbles) - Fantastic place (from Marbles) - Hard as love (acoustic version from Less is More) - The Space (from Seasons End) - Ocean Cloud (from Marbles) With Fish: - Hotel hobbies/Warm wet circles/That time of the night (from Clutching at Straws) - Fugazi (from Fugazi) - Forgotten sons (from Script for a Jester’s tear) - Assassing ( from Fugazi) - Emerald lies (from Fugazi) - Script for a Jester’s tear (from Script...) Cheers, 😎👍

If you haven’t heard it yet, check out “Care” on their latest album “An Hour Before It’s Dark”. It’s primarily about the care given to us Brits by our National Health Service. To say it’s emotional is an understatement, particularly the last section, “Angels on Earth”. Seriously, grab your tear wiping cloth of choice, put your headphones on and dive in. “The angels in this world are not in the walls of churches…..”

Another great reaction guys.... And yet another great band. So, its pronounced Marilly-on, if that makes sense! Once again a band with a super skilled guitarist, Steve Rothery, a master of very expressive and emotionally charged solos. Now as they have been around since the late 70's there is a huge back catalogue of material to delve into. My choices would be - Neverland, This Strange Engine, Out Of This World, Afraid Of Sunlight, Slainte Mhath (live Fish tribute), Three Minute Boy. In my opinion the live versions are the ones to go for, and as I'm more an H (Steve Hogarth) era fan than a Fish era fan (controversial view I know!!), I therefore prefer more recent concerts. As for similar bands, Pineapple Thief, Airbag, Spock's Beard, Porcupine Tree, IQ, are a few of my favourites. Cheers Bob....

Great choice ! I prefer the other singer , Fish , but the first album with Hogarth is excellent ! Space on this album is superb ! I suggest to you the first three songs on Marillion's Clutching at Straws (because they never stop) : Hotel Hobbies , Warm Wet Circles and That Time Of The Night (The Short Straw). Its the last studio album , an excellent one , by Fish ! The great classic album is Misplaced Chilhood , chosen as the fourth greatest concept album of all time by Classic Rock in 2003. Misplaced Childhood was Marillion's first full concept album consisting of two continuous pieces of music on the two sides of the vinyl record. Great music !

There are two Marillion eras based on a frontman change. Derek W. Dick (aka Fish) fronted a more 80s prog sounding band with incredible lyrics. Their last two albums, Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws are both concept albums that should be on the top shelf of any prog collection. It's hard to break singles out without losing something,. as most of the songs are two or three part epics broken into tracks. I know you're trying to listen to music over lyrics, but songs like Warm Wet Circles should have won Fish awards - the lyrics are off the scare great. OR maybe kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5e4dJeEjbhkipY For the Steve H. era I think you two would really like their Live performances of "Living With The Big Lie" = they have a lot of great songs. .

I've had a look through the comments and I can't see that anyone has mentioned Grendel yet. It's one of their very early tracks that was not on an album although it did subsequently appear on 'B' Sides Themselves. It tells the story of the Nordic Beowulf saga. There are critics who point to a section that is extremely similar to part of the Apocalypse in 9/8 passage in Supper's Ready and I think that is in large part responsible for a number of people who said that Marillion are a Genesis copy band. I think that's extremely unfair - Marillion had very much more than that to offer and were/are a fantastic band in their own right. If it was ever true (which I don't think it was), it is certainly not true now. Even taking into account the 'inspiration' from Supper's Ready, I think Grendel is an excellent track and worth exploring, even though it weighs in at just over 17 minutes long.

"Marillion, unlike many other bands, really m o v e s people." I once read that statement, probably on their own website. Very true words. Personally I do not like that style of music very much, but Marillion are masters of their craft. You simply have to acknowledge genius when you encounter it. If I happen to listen to their music, I am moved and challenged every time. By their sound, and by their lyrics as well.

Marillion was very big in Europe but never made it as big in the U.S. They were very talented musicians and had great vocals but for whatever reason, which I never understood, didn't explode here in the U.S. like other acts in their genre. They didn't explode because they didn't conform to what mainstream pop music needed to appeal to the lowest common denominator of music fan--to make money for big labels. Marillion pioneered the use of internet to promote themselves when few radio stations would play their music, and were the first to get fans to pre-pay in advance for them to tour and do concerts in their city. I've been a big fan since Script and they're brilliant no matter who the lead singer is/was.

Also try the band Enchant, they were discovered by Marillion's guitarist. Enchant is like Dream Theater lite....

They started off as an early Genesis style band. I’m hoping you’ll go back to BIG BIG TRAIN - EAST COAST RACER - you’ll love it

Ma rill-ion, it's coming from the Silmarillion, writings from Tolkien, the guy who created the Hobbits and the lord of the rings 😎 From the same album check also this great song "the Space"! They just changed their singer on this. Older songs with Fish also, try "The Web", "Fugazi", "Bitter suite"

Great reaction to a great song. I like your energy and vibes. I love Marillion and have seen them many times including a Marillion weekend for which I traveled from the US to the UK. They are an excellent band that have two eras based on different lead vocalists. Both eras are fantastic in their own way. Neo prog would be the way that most would describe their musical genre but to me it is just good music. I am curious to see how much progressive rock you two will explore on this journey as it is probably my favorite genre. My recommendations would be endless! Keep up the good work. Thanks for your time and effort to share what you love.

If you like amazing Guitar solos,,, try listening to Marillions song called Jigsaw. The Guitar solo part on the middle is fantastic.

Marillion (Mar-Rill-Eeon) are known as Britain's Best Kept Secret. They have been recording for 40 years and show no signs of stopping. Care from their latest album (An Hour Before It's Dark) is one of the greatest songs ever written. They need to be experienced live though, so, might I suggest live versions of The Great Escape, Neverland, This Strange Engine or Gaza. Guitarist Steve Rothery is one of the most underrated guitar players on the planet
