The beauty of Fish era Marillion is that each album is very unique and distinct. I don't get that from the newer stuff. I think it always seems to be missing something. I guess that must be Fish. Not just the voice and lyrics but also his influence. I bet these two would love Cliche from his first solo album. .

imho there is beauty in both eras. I used to prefer the Fish albums, then actually turned towards Hogarths albums for years and then back to Fish once again. Favourite is probably Clutching at Straws . But one can’t deny the beauty of a song like “Out of this world” from Afraid of sunlight. True gold right there ! However, why choose the live version for the reaction video. No way near as strong as studio version !

I agree. The studio version of this song is truly a masterpiece. It wowed me when I first heard it nearly 40 years ago and it still does. I love the emotional riffs that Steve plays and those lyrics are unbelievable. By the way, I know whereof I speak in that regard. I was a Journalism major at Ohio State.

Indeed Rich, Hogarth has great pipes without a doubt... Fish is Marillion's Roger Waters, he was the rage machine... always angry, hurt or outraged by the world around him & always seemed to convey all his emotions live. I was lucky enough to see them live for the 1st time in 1984.. I was 13 I went on my own.. ( too proggy for my metal friends) .. & I was transfixed by the total theater of their performance. So that wasn't the last time I saw them live.. I REALLY hope we see some more Fish Marillion xx horns to you both \m/

@Jean-Maurice Bicard I've seen Marillion both with Fish and Steve Hogarth and, even though there is a continuity, I think of them as separate bands. It's good nostalgic fun if the current band does a Fish era song, but it's like a band doing a cover version. These days I would rather hear Neverland or The Great Escape.

Thanks for this No he wasn't a classically trained singer, He sang in a false falsetto that was too high for his register. But TOO much on the criticism of this, Fish is a genius, Im one of those, "The band became unlistenable after fish left. For the greater part the album cuts are fantastic, but the true genius of Fish is his Lyrical songwriting. The PROSE of it, and the DELIVERY. He's unmatched in wordcraft, to the point of being poet laureate of the world. he has GOD LEVEL wordcraft. A Master poet. The Only ones Near his level alive are Bob Dylan and Steve Kilbey from the Church. Listen to Fugazi and Misplaced childhood in full, Clutching at straws is epic, La Gazza ladra is great (saw the tour as a high-schooler) -And the Musicianship- Rothery, god level also underrated as good as lifeson in my book - Fish's solo work also deserves a good hard look. Best lyricist alive today by far.

I loved Marillion, saw them live 2 times with Fish, but after he left i only bought one album, and then was done with them. Still loved the guitar, but Hogarths vocals were just boring. I also just saw the reaction video here of Sugar Mice with the album version and then a life version with Hogarth, and that sounded so bad, as if he was drunk or people punched him in the face and he lost all teeth or whatever ... so yeah, unlistenable.

The problem with Fish was that, he was a wonderful artist, I just love him and love the Fish Marillion years, but, he was a lazy drunk (for real, and it gave us 4 amazing albums). From there, it made it so that, he was not working on his vocals. He was only relying on talent. And he was partying hard. It got to him at one point. But god he was good !!!!

Be careful Rich, Fish era fans are watching ;-) You're right, his performance is not so good, he has hard time to reach the high notes on this performance and I found this version very flat, a complete lack of power and rythm. Rich, as I've requested on your website, you really should try Fish's solo albums. I've requested "Cliché" form his first solo album "Vigil in the wilderness of mirrrors", you'll love it, promised, it's not possible not to ;-)

It's just too much to manage and we end of just picking at random and we sometimes we don't even know if we did that song until we start it up. We have nearly 700 songs and over half have been brand new to me. Here's the info... We have a system and database to keep track of who requests songs on our site. www.knr.wtf. Look for Make A Request on the Top Headings and you'll see the white boxes to fill in the request info. It's unfair to compare I prefer Fish purely because he displays so much more emotion when he sings anger and pain usually and sadness too. This song displays that perfectly also the melancholic Chelsea Monday, the anger of Forgotten Sons are two other examples and theres many more.Thats goes so well with Steve Hogarths searing moving guitar solos but obviously Rich prefers the cleaner sound from Hogarth.Thats fine but think to get the band fulky you need a singer like Fish.

I saw Fish with Marillion 8 times. His live vocals weren't the best I'd heard him do it at a couple of points in this performance. He wasn't a trained singer like Hogarth with whom Marillion still produced moments of brilliance like on Neverland, but for me they lost something special when Fish left. I like the comment about Fish being the Roger Waters of Marillion. A powerful force who left his mark indelibly stamped on the band.

Could I just point out that this performance was the last show of the tour in Hammersmith odeon arena in London. So Fishs voice would sound a bit off sometimes. Maybe check out Some studio versions of the song maybe Fugazi (1984) the title track, maybe The Web off the same live show or maybe their most popular realises like Misplaced Childhood (1985) or Clutching the Straws (1987) Any song of each is great from the studio is the best. Want Steve Hogarth go from Seasons End (1989) and on. One last thing Check out their longest song with fish Grendel which is from the same performance

Interesting that you picked up on his voice. Fish has always said that, to him, emotion matters more than technical proficiency. That howl of "Too late to say I love you..." from about 3 minutes 50 of the original video is pure catharsis. If your heart is broken, then your voice will crack. Fish era Marillion's most famous song is Kayleigh. This is a precursor to that song and is about Fish's decision to abandon a loving relationship to pursue a career in music. This song features the line "I never did write that love song..." , In Kayleigh he sings " I'm still trying to write that love song... It's more important to me now you're gone". Both songs are about that life changing decision.

I agree with your assessment of that guitar. It brings tears to my eyes, just as it is supposed to. Only one other guitar part uses so much emotion. The riffs during the last verse of Let Her Cry by Hootie and the Blowfish evoke the same emotions. These two parts are just a perfect match for such emotional lyrics.

This song is about feelings and regrets for his ex-girlfriend Kay and how their relationship ended. This song is also connected to their 1985 song "Kayleigh", from the Misplaced Childhood album. There are several lyrics/message in these songs that are connected. In this song, "I never did write that love song, the words just never seemed to flow" go with the lyrics/message in Kayleigh, "Kayleigh, I'm still trying to write that love song, Kayleigh is more important to me now you're gone". Another example from this song, "Too late to say I love you, too late to re-stage the play", go along with the lyrics in Kayleigh, "Kayleigh is it too late to say I'm sorry? And, Kayleigh, could we get it together again, I just can't go on pretending that it came to a natural end". I'm not sure Fish has ever really gotten over her.

I've been a long time fan of Marillion, I've seen them performed that exact same song on the 10th of Octobre 1987. I was 23. Two months ago I bought their latest CD. Both singers have great talent that isn't even an issue but I still think that Fish gave a better delivery, more theatrical and visceral. This is a long and hard song to sing, a lot can happen when doing it live, I'm not judging but I think you might be nitpicking a bit when speaking of those notes he didn't quite get. Anyway, great choice of song, I enjoyed your video. I liked

People always talk about how Fish was basically Marillion, and without Fish Marillion is no more, but I can't help to think of how identifiable is Rothery's sound and Pet Trewavas bass playing and his lines, but also, the influence of Mick Pointer in the drums when all of it started. He wasn't just a drummer, he did a lot for the sound of Marillion even though he didn't last very long. I love both eras, and my favourite songs are from the Script album and then from Marbles.

Vocally Hogarth might be better in a classical way of singing. But Fish is a better lyricist. And his accent his theatrics, his emotional expressions are way better. Without Fish Marillion became a 13 in a dozen kind of bands.

Marillion's albums of the Fish era got better with each one. On this album they were still finding their voice and Script is pretty derivative and overwrought. I loved this album when it came out and it still holds a lot of nostalgia, but I don't think it has aged very well. Fugazi was a nice step forward but the one after that, Misplaced Childhood, was a quantum leap. To me it's a prog classic from start to finish. It's much more original and modern and much better written, produced, and performed. They were no longer trying to be Gabriel era Genesis. They had fully become Marillion and it was fantastic. The last album with Fish, Clutching at Straws is also stellar.

still the strongest memories to these songs and the era during cold war when fish met his german wife and became the iconic german scottish singer talking about germany during cold war and the west Berlin island and Hansa studios there where this album had been recorded. It has been composed and recorded there - just a few meters away from the icron curtain or Berlin Wall which became famous also in the song David Bowie released in the late 70s called Heroes. But Misplaced Childhood had been recorded there 7 years later at the peak of Cold War before Gorbatchov became President. I see convoys curb crawling West German Autobahns Trying to pick up a war They're going to even the score Oh... I can't take any more And in these years he had watched german Autobahn full of military convoy from all the allied forces slowly moving some where and causing all the traffic jams which slowed everything down. Great video here and discussion afterwards.

We had at that time a record shop in Bremen where they had like 4 record players that constantly played one record and you could take headphone and listen to it. And when i saw one day that cover i was directly interested and then blown away by this song. A few friends of mine always called them a Genesis copy, but for me they were just the same genre, but there was not soo much in that genre, but in the end they sound quite different. And also Genesis were so good, that more music of that kind was always welcomed to me.

Fish is authentic, emotional, characteristic voice, artistic with him Marillion was Marillion. Hoghart Is good voice, lack of personality and artistic creativity with him Marillion justo get lost. The start of this song wasn't as good as Fish usually is, probably as you said was a bad night on the start of this song then he was just the Fish I love. Agree 100% Steve Rothery is God and Marillion Fish era is my number # 1 band ever. Just if you're curious about my top 3, 2nd is Iron Maiden, 3rd Pink Floyd and bonus 4th Camel. Great comments guys. Greetings from Canada 🤟🏼🤟🏼

Not to incite a war, but I think Fish's best stuff was later. Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws and even Vigil were amazing pieces. Script and Fugazi we're not my favs. When H took them to another level. Seasons End, all the way to F.E.A.R. there was never a bad album, just ones that were better than the rest. Try checking out "Sugar Mice" and then something from F.E.A.R. all of it is amazing!

Marillion were always compared to Genesis, Fish always to Peter Gabriel. However, if you talked to the Fans, they liked and enjoyed both bands and singers. The media couldn´t stop bitching .... I ´ve seen them twice and it was well worth all the money. One day, Fish (Derek) came walking into our store (i worked in a record shop in Berlin at that time) He was very quiet but very nice, gave autographs. Later that evening they played in East Berlin to a huge crowd.

Script for a jesters tear was their best album they ever produced....so poetic and deep. It's not just about singing a song it's about theatre. Fish was the ultimate performer. Your comment " spoilt by Peter Gabriel" really ...,? Fish was unique he was not a copy. ! Marillion was my band when I was growing up, it was not the regular pop music.... and thank god for that....if you did not get it ...it's your loss. Script for a Jesters Tear was a true inspiration maybe you should listen to Kylie Minogue

There's only one side - Without Fish there is no Marillion. I own everything Marillion did with Fish. I bought their first album without Fish, gave it 4 or 5 listens and was never impressed. It was just another rock band. A lot of "meh". It's too bad you listened to their live album. I always try to avoid live recordings if I can as they frequently are much lower quality. They can capture energy and excitement but the quality of the recording usually suffers. Check out the studio versions of songs like Forgotten Ones, Garden Party, or Heart of Lothian.

At this point, Prog Metal had just begun and Marillion had kind of morphed into that genre, but this song still holds many elements of Prog Rock. This song is very Yes-like. I did love the theatrics, though, because it fits what is a truly emotional song. This may be the most artistic take on losing the one you love to someone else, that I have ever heard. The one thing I wish was that you had focused on more of the lyrics. From comparing love to a game you play on a playground to comparing losing someone you hav loved forever to another to a jester, who, although he may be broken hearted, his job is to promote laughter, so he has to hide his pain, in he lyrics are moving and memorable. So I’ll hold my peace forever, as you wear your bridal gown is a very telling line. The winner in this game of love is even compared to a prince, while the loser is compared to a frog. And that is just the lyrics. This song covers everything musically. It really embodies everything a Prog Metal anthem is. This song is good enough it has always caused me to put Marillion above Dream Theater in the Prog Metal hierarchy ( For the record my rankings are 1 Savatage, 2 Queensryche, 3 Fates Warning, 4 Marillion, 5 Dream Theater).

Mick Pointer the drummer founded this band and was unceremoniously sacked straight after this show. He has been with Arena since then with Clive Nolan (Pendragon). You need to check out Arena. PS Drummer Andy Ward (Camel) filled in for a while but his health problems forced him to leave. and Ian Mosley who had played with Steve Hackett has been there ever since.

I was at this show, well, both of them, there were two nights. Mick Pointer's last live performances (he was fired very shortly afterwards). Marillion were very exciting back then, and Fish had real charisma. But Hogarth has the better voice.

Yes, Rich, I would listen to the studio version if I were you. Not only are the vocals pristine, but the sound is less muddied, so you can hear Steve Rothery much better and his guitar work on this song is so emotional that it must be heard clearly. There are two really emotional guitar parts in rock/metal that I think evoke the emotions of the lyrics very well. The best, I believe, is the guitar riff played before the last verse of Let Her Cry by Hootie and the Blowfish. The second is in this song toward the end where the lyrics talk of the wedding of the girl the songs subject has always loved. The riff evokes crying and wailing, which is just the feeling that the lyrics try to evoke. It is a perfect match. It is emotional and it is beautiful.

I have certainly seen and heard better Fish live performances than this. I think it was the first or one of the first filmed performances of Marillion and I feel that he was pushing too hard on that night due to this fact. I love both Marillion era's and have been following them since 82. No offence taken by either of you and its nice to see first and honest reactions to the performances. You have some amazing gigs to listen to for future videos. Good Luck guys :-) go to the Marillion Conventions and become part of a unique family. :-)

This gig came close to the end of a 64 date tour that ran for nearly 6 months so, yes, fish's voice was starting to go off a bit. Normally he could reach the higher registers without straining. I would recommend Grendel from the same gig, it's an absolute classic. Fish and Marillion are both touring, seperately unfortunately, this winter.

I love Marillion, both eras are great. Fish was never a great vocalist, sometimes his vocals are more spoken. With him it was more about his persona, his style of lyric and the theatrics. The big chart hits happened when he was in the group and to many he was Marillion. Hogarth has greater vocal ability and can play various instruments too, he played keyboards before becoming a singer, so their live sound was enhanced and they could play more styles of music due to Hogarth's vocal range. But the sound of the band changed and put some off and commercially, neither did well after the split. I have a box set of the last Fish era album that has demos of songs they were working on and they sound tired. Some of these pieces appeared on the first Hogarth era album and sound so much more refreshed, Hogarth breathed fresh air into the band for me. The version you have chosen is a typical live Fish performance, what stands out to me is the drummer. His playing is basic and by the numbers, the bands sound became better when Ian Mosley joined on drums on the next album and live performances of Script with him on drums have a bit more drive. They're a great band, seen them many times and I hope you enjoy going through their archive.
