Absolutely their best... Friend Gene turned me on to them in 86', while I was die hard Maiden, Queensryche, Priest fan, Lavender ended up being my wedding song in 98', still listen to this album 2-3x a week...

The album is a masterpiece and this song is such a fitting opener. It combines accessibility with complexity using unapologetic musicality. It doesn't get said enough, but Pete Trewavas is a fantastic bassist! His tone and bass parts are perfect in every song (and these guys have a LOT of songs)! 😄

That is so true. Pete's gets a fantastic tone with his base and a lot of musicality, a great bass player and yes his base perfectly suits and lifts every song

Fish had a great voice and his poetic lyrics were brilliant. Steve Hogarth has a great voice his poetic lyrics are brilliant so is his Piano/Keyboards, Guitar, hammered dulcimer et al.

David Cook That's because the music was already written. Even if Fish had stuck around, most of the music would have been the same. I think the death knell for Marillion as a major band was Holidays in Eden, which was a bit too Bryan Adams and failed as the commercial album it was trying to be because radio programmers didn't want to know, while many old Marillion fans just thought they'd sold out to pop and left them for good.
@DCHurlford19 жыл бұрын
Matt Maloney Good point you make re the band's commercial decline. Season's End, Holidays In Eden and Brave all made the Top 10. It was the death knell (as far as album sales were concerned) when they left EMI after their excellent Afraid of Sunlight album in 1995.
@DCHurlford19 жыл бұрын
Matt Maloney Come to think of it, Sunlight only made the Top 30 (as I recall).
@MALONEYCAMFIELD9 жыл бұрын
David Cook I think EMI's decision to drop them was made way before AOS. It was probably made as soon as Fish left and Seasons End showed a sharp drop in sales figures. Holidays was certainly seen as a last ditch attempt to recapture a big commercial audience (which it didn't succeed at), so I think the writing was already on the wall circa 1991. It think the contract with EMI meant both parties were going to see it through but EMI were looking purely and simply at the sales figures which were going in the wrong direction. It didn't matter to them how good AOS was (and some of it was outstanding - even Q Magazine acknowledged that!!).

'Your beloved Fish'? pfft!! my friend, Marillion without Fish's creative genius would never become the monster that it became, with its unique sound and haunting lyrics. The original Marillion's DNA has Fish written all over it. Yes, they are still great with Hogarth (and I love all the albums until Afraid of Sunlight, their 2nd era Magnum Opus being 'Brave') but don't say they're better;The Fish era is untouchable.

A ragged man came shuffling through A puppet king on the fourth of June And butterflies from all around Settled on his paper crown A pretty sight it seemed to be An avenue of eternal peace But he said, "What is here can soon burn down..." "I'm the king of Sunset Town." Watch a big wheel turning 'round Some go up, and some go down Some go thirsty, some just drown "That's the law 'round here, " Said the king of Sunset Town And in the night he comes to me And the square becomes a battlefield Of staring eyes that can't explain The insanity and the greater game Watch a big wheel turning 'round Some go up, and some go down Some go thirsty, some just drown "That's the law 'round here, " Said the king of sunset town A ragged man came shuffling through The corridors of this white place And as he lay his body down I saw the scars that lined his face And injured souls came to his bed To hear the stories he would tell Of butterflies and summertimes And everyone assembled here Remembers how it used to be Before the twenty-seventh came This place will never be the same He said, "I'm the king of sunset town." Watch a big wheel turning 'round Some go up, and some go down Some go thirsty, some just drown "That's the law round here, " Said the king of sunset town

... but why all these comparisons between Fish and Steve Hogarth ??? they are two different persons ...with different styles . so what ? Fish was great and he left .... Steve stepped in and took Marillion in maybe a different direction . A band has to evolve and keep fresh . Marillion did just that . Its not their problem if some people can t appreciate their work . They sounded great with Fish and they still sound terrific with Steve Hogarth .....and this ladies and gentlemen is a great album !!!!!

Full Metal Jacket, why the constant comparison? Because they went on doing something different under the old name. I like em both but like Van Halen the comparison will always be part of this band.

@MALONEYCAMFIELD8 жыл бұрын
+limon limonero Of course Pink Floyd were prog. That reminds me of an article in the Guardian whereby a journalist tried to make a case that Pink Floyd weren't prog because they were good and prog was crap. Floyd tick almost all the boxes (concept albums, extended compositions, philosophical lyrics etc). In many ways they were a lot more prog than Marillion, who were almost an AOR band with the number of top 40 singles they had. Pink Floyd hardly released any singles and were far less commercial than Marillion. Just because they sold a shitload of albums doesn't make them not prog.

Co do Sisters zgoda, fakt ze Chopina nie kazdy musi lubic ale powinien znac;) Progressive nie chodzi w 'szerokim radiu' bo nie jest 'radiowy'- z wyjatkiem moze 'Another Brick In The Wall' PF.

This opening song is Rothery shouting at the fans: "Hey guys, we're still Marillion"... I just wish I could appreciate Hogarth's voice more, but to me it's mostly wailing, no matter how often I listen. I even went to a concert with him solo once, but it wasn't much of a pleasure. Never, ever, as good as Fish, even with good lyrics and great compositions.
