Not just gay teenagers, it was every workingclass teenager, the early 80's was a time where, dressing up was the nearest we got to art and escapism from those who saw us as nothing more than factory fodder (if you could get a job). Regardless of intelligence, aspirations was educated out if us!!! They couldn't take our clothes, make-up or music from us. Thank the Lord for Charity Shops!!!

I was 9 years old when this came out. As a young kid I couldn't determine if this was a man or a woman, but it didn't matter, us kids still loved the song and the video. There was no judgement by us as children - we just accepted it. Watching this today I realise that prejudice towards non-binary people is learned behaviour.

I just love him presently. Had a big Pete Burns, watch ‘everything’ bender when he died too. My first ‘tape’ I bought at 7 ( with parents with great taste) was ‘Colour By Numbers’! I was working in Heaven nightclub in London at this time. I remember he did a show and there were hundreds of screaming teenagers. Image, life, taste, personality, blatant ‘normal’ person to me as in myself and lifelong community, content in himself from a young age as who he really is, at an age we were spoilt with cool stuff, we made our own decisions, understood unsaid differing/ interesting things and lived it before reined in political correctness. Great boy/ girl androgynous era. Went either way too if you think of bands like The Eurythmics. I’m 43 and this was my era. My first bought tape at 7 was Culture Club, ‘Colour By Numbers’.
