Best known for her duet with Phil Collins, "Seperate Lives", Marilyn Martin also had a minor hit with this song in 1986. It's a shame that she didn't make it bigger (and that this vid hasn't been upped before).
She's a realtor now (according to wikipedia).

Tough competition in the music business, 1986 or otherwise. Also, Atlantic Records only released the CD version in 1986 in Japan for some unknown reason (it has since been released on cd in 2005 from Wounded Bird in North America). Had it been sold in North America on CD at the time (cassette and LP were available though), might have caught on better, as it would have reached more CD review magazines for example, might have been played more in high end music stores which were promoting the fairly new CD players, might have been played on more radio stations using the CD formate, it might have spread the word more

Back then albums had a month or so delay before they made it to CD here in the U.S.Atlantic Warner was known for that it took a month to see 1987 Frehley's Comet to be released on CD it all depends on how that album sold .

@@backslash68 Miami Vice was big back then & this was a very Miami Vice kind of song & I think it was used in the series. Her problem was, she wanted to be a more "pure" Madonna type look but only let her "dark side" come out in her singing. If she'd had dark hair & not been so skinny, she'd had a much better career. IMHO. But considering 1986, this video is 9 outta 10.

Heard it first in Houghton, MI in 1986. Still listen to it at age 61. Today's music is not as great as the 80's. The hell with generations y & z. I'll continue listening to this at age 70 and beyond.

The producer of this video did an excellent job, I like the concept of the video, its drama, mysticism and how the scenes were directed according to the song. Marilyn Martin, looks spectacular, her body language, expressive and emotional gestures in each scene of the video, it's amazing! It is pure perfection, its unique voice quality to handle different tones of voices is amazing. I think she was not given enough exposure in the industry as an artist, because she would have been more successful than she had. It is unfortunate when artists with unique quality and talent are not given the recognition that they deserve in an increasingly incomprehensible industry in valuing the "quantity" more than the quality! Marilyn Martin, an artist who has left her mark on her musical legacy and has no comparison with any female artist of her time, she is unique!

This song exploded onto Canadian radio in early `86! This track went to the top 40 in the us and Canada as well! The driving beat, awesome vocals and solid guitar work drove this song home! Is it only me that thinks they just don`t write songs like these anymore?

One of the best vids of the 80's or even ever. Spooky little 5 min movie, She was a long time back ground singer for Stevie Nicks (Can be seen in many (Most all from 80's ) of Stevie's live vids, and videos.) She did her version (my fav actually) of "Sorcerer" for the Streets Of Fire soundtrack with Stevie on Backing vocals ( A neat little switch). This has always been one of my favorite songs and still ranks with the chill factor.

+redrusty66 Marilyn toured with Stevie on her 'Wild Heart' tour in 1983 and recorded her version of 'Sorcerer' in 1984, she also sang backup on Stevie's 1985 album 'Rock A Little'. Those are her Stevie connections.

Saturday Night Live, Solid Gold, The US Festival and a slew of other televised and high profile appearances during those years leaving a very visible mark . Saw no reason to attempt to diminish her stint in "Stevie Lore" as aside from THAT, this song and one duo with Phil Collins she really has nothing else Music Career wise to send people looking for. She deserved more. considering her talent, but, that was her rightful decision.

The first time that I heard this song, was Joe's cover of it. I loved it. I didn't find out that it was a cover until this week, when I stumbled upon someone's list of 80s songs that he/she thought should have been bigger hits. This song ranked high on the list. When I watched the video, I loved her voice, and ended up buying some of the songs from her two albums, including this one, of course. She co-wrote the song with John Parr.

Those old enough to remember the days when you joined a music club. Get 13 free albums and have to buy so many more. A card was sent every month and if you forgot to mail it back, an album was automatically sent. Marilyn Martin was the album I received since I didn’t return the paper. Turned out to be an album that I loved, most every song and it really is rare to have that happen.

I have been an unknown songwriter for 3 decades & I was showing my Dad this song for its great sound properties & amazing key changes. My Dad's next statement was a game-changer: "This song has a timeless quality. So do your songs, son. Don't get frustrated about not being recognized for it. You were also born out-of-your-time; so what you do has so many properties of songs like this; which you like so much. You write like this, but you also write like THIS." *He proceeds to pull up a Randy Travis song called 🎶Better Class of Losers🎶* This song is such a masterpiece. But I am so glad that Phil Collins (whom I have also met one time in Philadelphia PA) had the popular duet with Marilyn Martin on 🎶Seperate Lives🎶

What's even more ridiculous is that in 1986 her self titled CD only had a Japan release, with 2 bonus tracks not on the North American LP or cassette. In 2005, finally, Wounded Bird put this CD out in North America (without the 2 bonus tracks), is out of print and expensive to find Also of note, Joe Lynn Turner sang this song in 2006 for the Sunstorm project

3SALTO: I like the fact that she does NOT look like a typical vampire - makes her that much more dangerous and diabolical! She was out to lure her prey, and if she HAD "gone for the vamp look," she wouldn't have been very successful (re: that loft-ful of dozens of hanging corpses!). Also, the video would have been totally cheesy if she was all emo'd out. It's perfect as it is.
