I used to watch vintage makeup tutorials and alot of times they would say "less is more, use colors that match your skintone, wear blushes that are right for your undertone, use eyeliner snd eyelashes that fit your face shape" now more people wear a bunch of makeup and alot of times we are following and usuing makeup that doesnt fit our face, color or features just because its a trend. Also, i agree fashion now is crazy people back then dressed, so elegantly poor or rich didn't matter.

Plastic surgeons were Specialists with years of practice before being "Allowed" to touch the money makers (Stars) of old Hollywood.. Before mass production of Makeup, a Foundation was Spray Painted on. Pretty much like the spray painting of the automotive industry. It took them almost 6 hours sitting in the Make up chairs or Artists Stations. Now with mass production the makeup industry is sadly a cash grab by Mega Corporations.

And, what's up with the huge, fake discount-store looking fake eyelashes? They look ridiculous! I asked my husband what he heard other men saying about those lashes on women, and he said he thinks they look stupid himself, but that some of the younger guys thought that looked really hot. (Dude! I don’t think it’s a question of advancement, I think it’s a loss of artistry. People were artisans back then. People don’t hone a skill these days, they pick careers and there is a difference. Wig artisans, surgeons, and makeup artists I think prioritized skill probably natural skill. Nowadays anybody can become a surgeon, makeup artist or wig maker and a lot of times artistry can’t be taught.

Firstly, another fabulous deep dive! The wigs? OMG. It has to be a combination of great wigs, great makeup artists, and great photography, a trifecta probably not easily attained today. But what the heck do I know. Yes, beautiful, talented, and eventually tragic. Geez, almost sounds like a meme for the time. But I adore this fleeting, glamorous bygone era. Advancing and expanding technology, relaxing social norms, and increasing instant everything smothered it, very similar to what post-WWI changes did to the Victorians I suppose. I love how you keenly focus down on the individual and their personal journey within the "machinations" of the Hollywood (or the fashion industry or whatever) of their time. We all are the product of our choices, after all. Fate is just a threshold. But I totally agree about bringing back some everyday style and grace! It's far easier than magnetic lashes and a hella lot more fun! 😇

Good evening, Ms Karin. Thank you for this fascinating video on Marilyn Maxwell. I noticed that you incorrectly pronounced Jimmy Durante’s name. It is pronounced “də-RAN-tee”, not “də-RANT”. If you plug in a name on Google, you can actually find audio clips that further illustrate tricky pronunciations of names. You also mentioned about makeup getting worse over the years. I agree that there has been some drop off, but I think 4K resolution is the real culprit. Thank you again for the video.
