In 1974/75 I crewed on a 45' Coronado out of Marina Del Rey. Racing and some trips to Catalina. Also remember a very nice 57" Chris Craft Constellation named the Snappy Tom. For a young guy from Missouri, Marina Del Rey was totally awesome.

I grew up in Venice and Mar Vista. We used to go swimming at Mud Lake (Marina del Rey today). There was a raft to swim out to and water skiing on the far side of the lake. We lived in an apartment on what is today Albert Kinney Blvd (it was part of Washington Blvd back then). After a year we had a house a block down from the apartment. My Brother and I went to St. Marks Catholic School. My Dad was an Engineer for L.A., his office was at the old Venice City Hall. The window above the entrance was his office window. He was assigned to the Marina project in the 60's. Mom found a bunch of aerial photos of the Marina being built that I can only assume were taken by my Dad, Earnest Stillwagon. I don't know what happened to them but I told Mom she should give them to the City. I still miss the times we swam at Mud Lake.

The famous singing Lennon sisters I know, grew up in the area, and they were devout Catholics. I want to say they attended St. Marks Catholic church.

This was just Great, Thank You! I was randomly searching vids on MDR, as around 2000 I had a Catalina 27 in the Catalina dock anchorage across from the Warehouse restaurant for about 3 years. Even though I wasn't there earlier, it was still a magical time!!

At 14:37 I can clearly see my Grandmother's, and later my Mother's property. I have this picture framed and inherited it from my Mom after she died. #24, 25 and 25 1/2 Voyage street. I remember there were still many foundations from the oil derricks all over the neighborhood in the 60's. The house at 24 Voyage is gone and replaced with a big ugly apartment. As far as I know, 25 and 25 1/2 are still there.

Even in the mid 1990s there were still abandoned property lots on Brooks ave. west of Pacific ave and also along Speedway near the Venice pier that had been used for oil derricks.There were warning signs about the land being contaminated by hazardous waste. By the early 2000s those lots were occupied by families in their newly built homes. The new Playa Vista city east of lincoln and Ballona, is built on top of a giant methane field and there is a natural gas extraction facility right next to the Playa del Rey bluffs and below the clifftop homes. It is amazing yet not surprising,given the danger, that any of this was permitted for habitation.

They should have made the harbor twice as large if they could have. The demand for dock space would easily exceed that. A missed opportunity. Interesting Video!

San Pedro/Wilmington was just a better place to build. You all stayed a Marina and we became the busiest port in the U.S but you all became a way higher end neighborhood.

Were any wetlands restored during the redevelopment? ha, just kidding!
@richardcogbill6791 Жыл бұрын
The Ballona wetlands reserve is a preserved, partially restored area of wetlands.

Name one Duck hunter in Los Angeles in 2024…name one bird who gives a single fuck about the wetlands they never knew once existed. There’s thousands of happy birds here shitting on people’s balcony’s, plenty of fish, dolphins, seals…none of these animals care or knew any wetlands existed. There are 13 entire ass ecosystems in California and 9 massive protected national parks. Why do we need wetlands in the middle of a crowded coast. What’s the real reason you think they should have been restored? Because they are pretty? Smells like virtue signaling advocacy to me.
