Three things: The French don't owe us anything, they can man their border any which way they please. When we were in the EU we had a super national forum to air and find remedies to any grievances, we cut ourselves off from that by Brexiting. Ten booths is not enough. It takes five times as long per person as before Brexit. So ultimately, Brexit is to blame.

Brexiteer Luddites have an excuse for everything - and it usually involves blaming the French. Note the lack of accountability by that Richard chap. Note his condescending tone as he thinks he knows better than everyone else. The point is something failed at the UK side and as usual Brits are blaming the French. Ditto for airports, where those in charge of airport hiring are in complete denial that they did anything wrong in cutting too many staff and failing to plan for the pick up in numbers by hiring more people.

@@klmn2000 we have this thing called the Le Touquet treaty, this moves the French border to Dover and the British Border to Calais. Now that there are border checks and the delays that this causes, everyone is up in arms.... The man is foolish, like many Brexiteers, to deny the reality of Brexit that we all have to live with. These hold ups also affect EU passport holders, because they need to be checked as well. And imagine how a bus full of travellers would have to have every single passport checked and stamped, Visa conformity checked on a database, the bus search for declarable or smuggled goods. It's an absolute disaster. I hope the idiotic politicians who tricked a nation will be made to pay a price!

AFAIK the only passenger ferry service from Southampton is the one to Cowes. Mr Tice may be unaware that there are no customs or passport checks as Cowes is on the Isle of Wight. OTOH, you can take the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, St Malo, Santander, and Le Havre but these are much longer crossings with a much less intensive service than Dover-Calais (Brittany Ferries' service to Bilbao is twice a week) and the border checks are on arrival not departure. However, given the abject incompetence of the UK government, it may not be very long before we see reports of immense queues on the M3 and M27.

@@kelvinsidwick506 Of course it's a question of space, you are slowly getting there, congrats! BUT think a TINY bit further: HAS THAT SPACE CHANGED IN ANY WAY SINCE 2016? It was absolutely clear back in 2016 that those checks would take longer should the UK vote for Brexit AND it was absolutely clear back in 2016 that there would not be the space for the number of booths needed to perform those additional checks, the stamping of the passports and so on. So anyone claiming "I knew what I was voting for" VOTED FOR THIS. Some may have been too thick to put 2 and 2 together and to see the obvious but they should not be allowed to say "I knew what I was vorting for". It really is as simple as that. But it's not just the voters, Raab famously admitted that he had no clue of the importance of Dover, either. That is the actual tragedy of Brexit: Not one of those who pushed for it understood the consequences but they kept lying to the people and too many of the people were gullible enough to believe them.

I am absolutely amazed at the naivete, or deception, around the idea that ten booths will be enough in Dover. In the airport of Bogota, Colombia, we have a bit less than ten booths to receive all the travelers from international flights and total chaos happens when three flights arrive at about the same time. People can lose their connections because of this. At best we can process a few hundred passengers per hour. And most of the passengers are returning locals. I have been in queues of at least 500 passengers in some busy airports, and it takes about half an hour to go through immigration, with several agents attending. If you tell me that 50 agents are necessary for Dover I will instantly believe you. This is called being a third country. If you are admitted to another country it is only because of the generosity of the receiving country and because of the profits that the tourism industry brings. If France decides that they will assign just one agent to Dover, they will only need to answer to their own tourism industry, not to a single soul in the UK.

@@pansepot1490 Quite the contrary, the French have been great neighbors and have tried to help in an impossible situation. But the Brexiteers desperately need to place the guilt on somebody else, and the French, for their own reasons, have stopped short of telling the unadorned truth to the Brexiteers. The French could have demanded a whole new place for their inspectors with space for thirty or more stations, offices for administrative personnel, a complete security organization for their people, and a lot more. They asked for slightly better installations and accepted no for an answer. I wish the French had bought a one-page ad in a UK paper and told the people in the UK that under the current level of collaboration from the UK government they could only promise sweat and tears for the UK tourists.

@@Iain1962 When you analyze queues statistically you will see that generally even overcrowded processing queues are empty some of the time. In this case, lots of people changed their plans or went to other ports and probably everybody worked overtime until the rush ended, so a day or two without long queues is quite typical even in a broken system. But most importantly, the UK is at the mercy of France. If the French government decides that it is better to have German tourists, or Polish tourists, it can assign less than ten agents, and authorize no overtime and no replacement of sick and vacationing agents. If they feel mistreated because of the fishing rights disputes, they can suddenly have eight sick agents. If they believe that a small group of Brits made a smuggling ring, they can strip search every Brit they want to, on the flimsiest of clues. I am from a third country, and that is the typical treatment of third countries. In my case, since my country produces illegal drugs, any law-abiding citizen, like me, can be deported back to any place in South America just because the Border Patrol agent thought you seemed fishy. Being a third country is one of the things that perpetuates the under-development of my country. If we could enter the EU, or any big and important trade block for that matter, we would be a lot closer to becoming a developed country. That shows the size of the decision that Brexiteers made for the UK, swapping the best place you can be in for the hole where under-developed countries are kept.

From the day Brexit was conceived I hated it, I voted against it, I accepted the vote after the announcement I never wanted anyone to go against the vote. Come now with the deal agreed we are facing the prospect of problems from every aspect. Now I wasn't born in the 70s when we called the poor man of Europe well guess what were going back the way if this and the next government don't start to get real and start to smooth things over with our neighbours, we left a rather great deal where we had access to funds, commerce and prosperity a dream that Winston Churchill had as well as Margaret Thatcher did right now they are turning in there graves all for what, problems that I and the new 2 to 3 generations have to inherit all because one side made outrageous climbs and the other didn't fight hard enough for. Brexit what a pile of s*@%

There is no right for customer service. If the French decide to not check passports for one day, there is nothing you can do about it. It's the UK citizen that asks for entry and it is only the decision of France if they let them in or not. However, if a UK citizen wants to leave France and go back to the UK, France can not and will not prevent it.

The one thing EU passport holders cannot do when going through airports or seaports on their way to other EU countries is buy some cheap duty free. Duty free is back for travelers to and from the United Kingdom of course, courtesy of Brexit. Maybe that’s contributing to the delays, passengers are spending too long in the Duty Free shops.

Richard saying it takes “seconds” for the new checks is talking nonsense they have to get your passport check the number of days, stamp it and hand it back which estimates about 1 minute for each passport- minimum if there are more than 1 person in the car it’s a minute per person. This would have no affect on the lorries that have been waiting on average 40hrs in the lorry parks around Kent. Before brexit all that used to happen was that you would wave your passport through the window (if that if it was busy) so now 4-5 minutes for a family of 4 to get checked as opposed to 4-5 seconds pre brexit

I’ve been flying and driving regularly back and forth across to the EU for 25 years. The only times there have been significant delays at the Channel ports have been when there was some sort of political agitation on either side, or extreme weather. Flying to Spain in July and August has always involved queueing - it’s the school holidays. The rest of the year, I’ve never queued except when the airport workers were on strike. Since we left the EU completely there are now long queues in both directions all year round at both the Eurotunnel/Dover and at Malaga airport. I am frustrated by this but not in the least bit surprised. Anyone who takes transatlantic flights, or flights to Asia, will know that British passport holders have to queue at Immigration. This should not be a surprise to anyone. However, it seems that there are a number of British people who are labouring under the misapprehension that simply being British confers a Special Status upon them whereby the normal conventions of law and international travel don’t apply to them because they are inconvenient. How quaint?
