For a house of it's era and style, the "Mystery Room" would probably have been a parlor, or what as kids we called the "Don't Go Into" room. A room reserved for entertaining, when the preacher came to call, or when Marilyn had gentleman callers.
@TVHouseHistorian4 жыл бұрын
That's exactly the conclusion I came to. I said to myself, "Parlor!" I would have guessed that it might be a more formal auxiliary space for entertaining guests. You took the words right out of my mouth. :-)
@rreagan0073 жыл бұрын
Ironically, I think we get the term "funeral parlor" from the fact that back in the day people would have the corpse of family members lie in state in the parlor of their house so that friends and family could come to their home and see the body in the fanciest room of the house. So that room in the Munster's house, if it were a parlor, would literally be a room where dead bodies would be put on display.

I absolutely loved this, Marina. This TV home is one of the special ones for me, because it's got a lot of nooks and crannies in the background to explore. I just think the background rooms and nooks and crannies add a little more mystery to a set, and make the entire space appear much larger than it actually is. As for the little room in grandpa's dungeon that sat to the left of the stairwell as you're facing it, I always pictured that to be a much larger space - maybe even leading to a huge catacomb where ancestors are buried or entombed. Seeing as the footprint of the home is over 6,000 sq ft, and given the Munster family's personality, I could see this as very plausible. I think exploring these spaces is so much fun. I think I told you once before, I modeled the Cielo Drive home of Sharon Tate. True, it wasn't a TV or movie home. But it was an interesting space to explore, as I decorated it exactly as it looked the night of the murders. I'm kind of an existentialist, so modeling this home in 3-D made me feel like I was actually there. When I did the video, I added some incredibly sinister music, and the whole thing had you looking over your shoulder in fright. Certainly nothing to celebrate, but it was a very interesting space to recreate as I pictured the perilous events that took place. Sorry to get macabre on you, but I love exploring famous homes of all kinds - both fictional and factual. Another home I modeled was the Jean Bennet Ramsey home in Denver. That one never made it to KZbin, but speaking of nooks and crannies, that one was indeed a very haunting and peculiar space to walk through. Including the basement where the murder took place, you have (if memory serves) 4-floors of space to explore. The house is incredibly large and rambling, so you kind of felt like a sleuth as you sort of spirited through it. Then reading the timeline of events that occurred in the 24 hour period that the murder took place as you floated through the house made you actually feel like you were really there, trying to solve the mystery. Again, sorry if I sound all creepy. I just find these walkthroughs incredibly interesting.

It's Queen Anne or Victorian? My dad and I loved these houses SO much! The Munsters is my 2nd favorite show, Bewitched is my most loved. Herman and grandpa together was such a hoot! I loved the ep. when grandpa turned Herman into a cocktail waitress. And one we still quote now and then, was the one where Herman was on a diet, so grandpa strapped him to a table in the dungeon with a little TV that kept showing all this food for Thanksgiving. He broke free and busted into a house to join a families Thanksgiving dinner. The quote is : "pass the cranberry sauce". When it's first ignored, he pounds the table and loudly repeats it. "PASS THE CRANBERRY SAUCE!!" Hilarious!

When I got to speak with Tony Dow about it, I asked him where it had been when they were filming, and he indicated that it had been down near the Hitchcock bungalow, and Speilberg's Amblin bungalow, along the aqueduct at the back of the lot (Barham gate). The Munster's house also has a side entrance. You see it in a couple of episodes, like the one when Herman bought Marilyn a car from Fair Deal Dan. I guess that might be the door in the kitchen, though that would seem to be the back of the house. Of course the kitchen is an interior set on a sound stage, and the side entrance would be an outdoor set, probably a mile away somewhere else on the studio lot, so things don't necessarily line up.

I have always wanted to know a little more about the designers and people involved in actually building these sets, such as where did they find the props and furniture, and what inspired them. I guess they have all passed away by now but it would be a treat to hear from them if possible. I always favored the Addams Family over The Munsters because even as a child I found Morticia and Gomez' relationship to be so romantic and charming, I adored the way Gomez was just crazy in love with "Tish". Lily and Herman just didn't quite captivate me, but I have always wondered what happened to Lily's bat necklace. Somebody HAS to have it, I would think. This was an interesting video, and I am one of the ones who did appreciate the clean up job you did on the house in Part 1. I always thought it looked like a grand house that would be spectacular restored. My mother was a big fan of Dark Shadows when I was a child, and we were talking about all the heavy gothic furniture on that show, and she made a really good point I hadn't considered about the mid-20th century design aesthetic. She said that during that time all the heavy dark Victorian houses and decorations were thought of as way out of style, dated, spooky, and stuff nobody wanted or appreciated. I watch episodes of Dark Shadows now and drool over those antiques, but she said those things were considered garbage at the time. Anything all carved and gothic wasn't appreciated or considered valuable at all, people were getting rid of that stuff, literally just throwing it out. Everyone in the 50s & 60s wanted light, open, airy spaces with streamlined furniture. It was all about clean modern lines, so velvet and tassels and heavy drapery meant you were old fashioned and just plain weird. So maybe that is part of why The Munsters, The Addams Family and Dark Shadows had such novelty at the time.

@aesgaard41 Yes. I am. I'll be releasing White Christmas in December. Between now and then, I haven't settled on one yet. But I've been researching Golden Girls in case I do that one next. This month I'm actually making one that won't debut until February because it's for a presentation in Palm Springs that month.

Where was Mockingbird heights? Depends on the episode. In one episode, it was built on the Pirate fort of captain Morgan. In the episode where Herman plays for the LA Dodgers, it is California. How can the house be on either coast? Television magic. One thing that appears to be a left over from before the house was remodeled from the pilot, is the round window you enter the attic, in "Low Calorie Munster". In the pilot. you have a tower with round windows. In the regular series, the tower is remodeled, and there are no such windows. My guess is, the round window in that one episode, never seen anywhere else in the series, had to do with the way the house looked in the pilot.

I know this is an old vid but I was watching the Munsters the other night and there is a scene where Grandpa comes up out of the dungeon, walks across the living room to the stairs then goes under the stairs, then emerges out from behind the suit of armor upstairs. So I'm not sure about the dungeon connecting to the under the stairs part, because it would make little sense for grandpa to come out of the dungeon to go under the stairs, but under the stairs definitely connects to upstairs somehow
