I watched the movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), by Wes Anderson via the lens of a marine biologist. I've been meaning to watch this movie for a long while. It involves oceanographers, exploration and mentions to Jacques Cousteau. So I'm not even sure why I hadn't watched the movie yet. Overall, the movie was a bit different from what I was expecting. I share my overall thoughts at the end of the video. Hope you enjoy the video!

Hearing you talk about Jacquez Coustaeu was really cool. You clearly have a lot of admiration for him and his work, and even though he's super well known, I'm not sure a lot of people know why he's as famous an underwater explorer as he is. Are there any other people in Marine Bio and underwater exploration that might not be so well known, but still have a major, lasting impact, because that's the only name that comes to mind for an outsider like me. On the spy whales and such I actually know a little bit, a childhood friend's mother used to actually work with some dolphins in the U.S. program in San Diego and said that one of the main things they were looking to teach them was identification of enemy divers who would try to attack a coastal installment. They would attach a gps locator to the dolphins, "tell" them to look for people, and then go check the areas that the dolphins signaled they had found someone where they shouldn't be. They also trained seals or sea lions, maybe both, I can't really recall right now, but they would give them (and dolphins) a gps shackle thing that would stay open as long as they were holding it in their mouths. Then they would tell them to go find a diver and clamp it to their legs. I only ever heard of them training the dolphins to do anti human recon, never any offensive recon. As usual, top-notch video, it's a great mix of factually educational, and expressive of your interests within the scope of the subject.

Hi there, Maria! 🤗✨ I'm quite new to your channel. I'm an ocean lover and a diver, and a long time fan of Subnautica. I found your channel actually through a Subnautica search I did the other day. I must tell you what a privilege it is to watch you playing that game 😂 It's so fun to watch you learn how everything works, and I love your comments and incredible "off the top of your head" knowledge of marine biology. Just like this movie, Subnautica isn't supposed to be biologically accurate, it's entertainment - but it's so fun to watch your excitement based on your experience and obvious love of the sea! Instant fan here! 🥴 This was a great movie review too! I'm looking forward to getting caught up on all your videos. Thank you for making them! Loads of respect and appreciation to you! 😊 Ciao, hun!! xo

I like how they made the ocean world seem like it's a lot more magical than what it really is. When you go to school and see pictures given to you from books the child in you still has that wonderment that maybe..just maybe if you went out there for yourself in real life that there's this wonderment that they'll never tell you about. That somehow the real world and it's most hidden beauties are kept from the general public who would never know because most of us never leave the confines of our local area or routine of lifestyle. And here these guys are just navagating through this wonderland of ocean like it's no surprise. They've seen this kind of thing plenty of times. Huge jurassic like red under water plants with rainbow seahorses and schools of pink blobby things. It's both funny and mentally enjoyable.

Maria, may I ask why we should no touch anything NEVER? I mean, I get why you should avoid doing it and why this should be enforced in one time divers (people that are on a trip and decided to dive as a attraction). But we are part of this planet, why we should not be able to interact with it? In a responsible way of course. Other animal interact with each other all the time. Genuine question =)

I remember seeing this movie when it first came out and I was bored to tears watching it. I remember it getting rave reviews when it came, which is why I decided to watch it and I did not like it at all. Regarding submarines, some places have submarine shaped boats that you get rides on. They don't actually submerge, they're like the subs used on the Finding Nemo ride at Disneyland, just a boat that has most of its hull below the waterline and windows that allow you to see all around. Not exactly a real submarine or submersible, but kind of close and a whole lot cheaper to ride on.
