Funny, I am the one in the video. I was searching for some officer sword info and found myself teaching myself on KZbin. Weird. Nine years goes by fast in the Corps. And, the gentlemen who corrected me in the comments were correct. Turn the sword inboard before mounting it. I gooned that up while I was paying attention to the cameraman giving some direction. The sword can be tricky, and I blew the easy part!

It’s called Damascus steel. If you look carefully at the sword near the pummel you will see a Damascus star also known as a Magan David which symbolizes the quality of the sword. I just had my sword engraved with my rank, name and year I first bought mine. You have 25 characters including spaces to work with. The Quantico engraving machine was down so I found a Navy Master Chief that does engraving and he did a MASTER job. I plan on passing it down to my son. Semper Fi, we earned it.

It has to do with history. The very first "engagement" was during the Barbary wars in the early 1800s. Eight Marines and a small force of mercenaries took the seaside fortress of Derna (near Tripoli) after a 500-mile forced march. The Pasha of Tripoli awarded the officer in charge a Mamluk sword for his bravery, and it has been the official Marine officer sword since.

MINaturalist actually the foot officers saber model 1859 was the officers sword until they changed it back and awarded the model 1859 to enlisted NCO's, SNCO's.

And the officer in command who led the mission was Lt. Presley O'Banion.
@jbrazee54254 жыл бұрын
Not to nitpick, but it was O'Bannon and either six or seven Marines (he was the seventh or eighth, which probably has led to some confusion over the years). The US Marine Corps History Division has the names of a sergeant, five lower-ranked enlisted, and O'Bannon. O'Bannon was also joined by a Navy midshipman, which leads to further confusion. U.S. Army Lieutenant William Eaton was in command, with O'Bannon second-in-command. One Marine was killed in the battle, and two wounded.

Damn, I did that DECADES ago. Great video. Thanks. After almost 50 years I just put my Marine back on. The enlisted Marines need us for motivation in these WOKE times.

Everything's good except he hung the sword incorrectly...after attaching the sling the sword and scabbard should be rotated INWARD toward the body before hanging. That way the sword sling wraps around the outside of the sword as intended.

I don't see anything wrong in purchasing said item. People collect weapons and other historical replicas as displays. So long as the person is not impersonating an officer, or lying about their past there is no disrespect. The only people disrespecting Marines are those who libel and slander them. I would say there are worse things you can do then buy a replica sword.

Can anyone explain why the sword is hung backwards?
@taoliu3949 Жыл бұрын
I think it's just to keep it out of the way so it's not swinging low as you walk.

I am a Marine and I, myself wouldn't be offended if you purchased an officer's sword, as long as you aren't pretending to be a war hero walking around in public.
