I absolutely love this system. There does not seem to be a huge difference between the MMSS green patrol bag and the 3S brown bag other than the location of the zipper and hood. It seems to weigh the same and feels about the same thickness. The MMSS black bag feels a bit thicker and slightly heavier than the 3S black bag but I honestly cannot tell the difference in warmth. Any time I take the complete system (MMSS or 3S) I always sleep in layering underwear and do just fine. The warmer the temps the less I have to carry (leave the black bags home) and the less I have to wear inside the bag. Where I live it rarely gets into single digit temps, but, when it does, I'm warm in either of those two systems wearing thick wool socks, fleece bottoms, t-shirt and sweatshirt (or polypro) and beanie. Sometimes I'll add in the poncho liner, especially when in my hammock, and sometimes not. I like the new system slightly more than the old, after the 3S has a better bivy, better compression sacks, and the bags themselves are comparable to the older MMSS.
@patrickhenry202110 жыл бұрын
That new bivy sack is a home run, but the bag itself is not nearly as warm as the old system. The compression sack is a wonderful piece too. The old system with this new compression sack and new bivy sack would be ideal for me
@WildOutdoorLiving8 жыл бұрын
+Kaleb Dodson I forget the actually names of the bags but he is referring to the black and green bags of the old Modular Sleeping System. The green bag is good for 30-40 degrees on it's own and the black bag is good for about -10 ish. The entire modular sleeping system is good for about -30 degrees F. If you put the black and green bags together inside this new bivvy you would have a very waterproof cold weather bag that I would guess would also be good for -30. The green bag and bivvy sack combo is warmer than the new 3s system as it can go down to 20 or 30 without extra clothing. The new 3s is only good for 40 without all the extra clothing.

I wish they had a video like this for the woodland camo version of the Modular Sleep System. I love my woodland MSS, my favorite piece of gear.
@CMDR-Cody Жыл бұрын
One thing I would do if I could go back is teach my Marines how to properly use their gear. We go to CIF and get all this stuff and no one ever shows you how or when to use it. It is a waste because the military puts so much time and money into R&D and then all the gear gets misused and then it has a bad rap. The other issue is that commanders are not doing proper research when it comes to planning unit training. I remember going to Bridgeport for Mountain Warefare Survival Training with only the three season bag and basic warming layers. It was so cold and back then I blamed the gear. Who knew there was a cold weather bag and more waring layers.

That is a nice sleep system and the Marines must love it so much when going to the field. I remember when I was in the Air Force and stationed at Minot AFB and got to know some guys assigned to the Air Defense Command and they lived in two story barracks. Some of the windows was broken out in their barracks and my friend had to sleep in a sleeping bag, but the system was not the best and it got really cold there in Winter.
@MrAzrancher10 жыл бұрын
The old Marine issue mummy bags were super warm, but so big you could not effectively carry them in an alice. We used them in base camp on cots but many of us bought civilian mummy bags like those used by mountain climbers that we could compress and carry. These look great, glad to see Marine equipment being modernized......

I liked my Intermediate Cold bag! It kept my ass warm during Winter CAX! And, if you've never experienced winter at 29 Palms, never say a desert is always hot! We had 6 ft of snow on the ground in the Cleghorn Pass area, and it got down to -15°F!

That system just does not have the Low Rating for real Cold temps, I have the Snugpak Antarctica 2c which was replaced with a new name being the Antartica RE, With a comfort rating of -20*c/-4*f down to -50*c / -58*f, Although many claim that they felt cold the lower rating is a survival rating not a Dreamland rating, I know of one person who used it in -56*c which is -68.8*f and survived, But the thing is that was without another 3 season bag added to it, If I did what they say here and added a 3 season bag plus my Parka and Bibs etc I would Roast even at -50 and below, I think my bag and the Bivvy Shown here would be the Ideal setup if I was going to sleep in heavy under layers But any of my Parkas etc would be over kill for sure, Great Video and thank you for posting It, Stay Safe. Thumbs Up.

They did mention a separate cold system. This system is for 3 seasons only. I'd prefer this system because my place is a tropical climate.

I have the MSS woodland bivy and it is great. At one point I was considering picking up the USMC bivy, mainly because I liked the idea of the bug net, but after speaking with multiple marines and being told time and time again by them how much the new bivy blows, I decided to just stick with what works.

I can not remember how many times my unit has been to the field during winter with just that 3 season bag and basic warming layers in temperatures lower than 10 degrees. It wasn't till 2 or 3 years later that any of us ever learned that the extreme cold weather bag even existed. We were fucking pissed that we had been going to the field for 3 years with 6 inches of snow on the ground and freezing our nuts off that practically the whole damn unit filled anonymous grievances to the brass. Apparently got worked because there was an enormous ass chewing to every one e-6 and above when the battalion CO came down for a surprise inspection. Supply guys knew what was up when the first thing he asked to see was our cold weather gear. The new system sucks plain and simple. The old system was big and bulky if you were taking the whole system with you but only an absolute nutter would take the cold weather bag to the field if they knew they didn't need it. The old system was warm PERIOD.

Army navy brick and mortar/ online or Ebay. You'd have to look harder to find this system exact system in either. The old 4 pc MSS is all over Ebay. From what I can gather a hybrid of old and new may work best. old bags (Patrol & Cold) with new bivy (Digital camo) & new compression stuff sacks. Happy shopping.

Synthetic, you will never ever see Down in military equipment. Down is a breeding ground for fungus, bacteria, and parasitic pests. If it's not properly aired out and dried promptly it will mold and ruin the bag.

The Marines switched to this sleep system for 2 reasons. 1 cost.(got tired of paying for gortex). And 2 wanted soldiers to sleep for 5 hours no more. (After 5 hours your too cold and wake up.) Campers and survivalists stay away from this set up. How does 2 different colors for different heights make sence?
