True . I was in the navy . My first ship was an older class that was nearing retirement , and we got the older gear . My second ship was stateof the art and we got all the new tech . The navy puts their money where they see fit , and oftentimes the Marines get underfunded .

I was army for 15 years. The difference are slight depending on the missions and time period. I love my Marine brothers and sisters but I've never lost a fight to one and when we were stationed together on the battlefield we both had a go hard or go home attitude. The Army is just bigger so the perceived weaknesses are due to some support elements not being as hardcore, but elements like combat arms, maintenance, and special operations operate at the same tempo. We do tend to keep more troops that the Corp would probably cut but it's because like it was stated, we're bigger. Dicipline depends on the command. I've saw undisciplined Marines just like I've saw undiciplined Soldiers, but the Army would give more chances.

I am a Army Parachute Infantryman, and having fought and trained besides Marines was one great experience, we learned lots from one another. I felt like me and my boys benefited more from them than the other way around, the junior leadership was simply top notch we absolutely believed that in a fight our advanced equipment could give us the edge if we could nullify their violence of action. I loved working and fighting alongside them it was lots of fun.

The new marine organisation reminds me of modern German “groups” being made from up to 12 soldiers and subdivided into two “troops”. Traditionally one being led by the assistant commander. It seems the hard fighting in the Middle East causes an adaption of more decentralised command structures on the field.

I think the best way to look at the difference between the Army and the Corps is the Marines are like a shock force, while the Armys' purpose is to occupy and hold a position that the Marines cannot because of their lesser numbers. As a retired Army E-7, I tend to look at the Marines as generally better troops, because in bad situations some of the Armys' individuals leave something to be desired. In Vietnam, I dealt with Marines on several occasions and was very impressed.

Funny story about the Marines being cheap. This was back in the late '80s. Got back to the barracks one day and noticed that we had new furniture in the common areas. I said "cool" and sat down to relax on the new sofa. It was then I noticed that although the sofa looked new, there was some minor wear with it. The S4 guy was still there and I asked him where the new furniture came from. He said they found out the air force were renovating some of their barracks over at Seymour Johnson and were throwing out all the old furniture. Naturally, we were more than happy to take it off their hands. Gotta love the cheapskate Corps.

In sweden we have 6 man or 8 man squads. The reason for that are that studies have shows that a Leander can lead up to 6 people effectively. So thats why we have about 5 squads in a Platoon = 5 squadleaders to talk to for the pluton commander. And 5-6 platoons in a company. About 5 platoon officer for the kompany commander to lead and so on

It’s important to remember the President can order the Marine Corps into combat operations anywhere, anytime i.e. the Presidents own. All the other branches require Congressional approval with few exceptions. The Marine Corps always has at the very least 3 MAGTAFS afloat 24/7/365. This allows us to have a well trained fighting force anywhere in short order. The Navy and the Marine Corps work very closely together on these operations.

There is also a major difference in mos within the army itself. Infantry platoons and combat MOS, generally have stricter regulations. People outside of Infantry are typically what have different rules. We had to get a 270 to not be s shit bag, dress code was enforced, and new infantryman would get put through strict tests to make sure they could do their job.

Not sure about the part where the Army has the “best” of equipment. When I joined the Army in 1984 my issued M16A1 was Vietnam era junk made by “General Motors”. The M60 I was issued later looked like it had been drug behind an M151 (jeep) for about a 100 miles and the 1911 I had as a side arm was so worn out the barrel rattled in the slide when you shook it. It had to be from Korean War and maybe even WWII. A Marine myself, I take issue with many of the points made here because the focus is mostly on the different missions of the two services and not on the different ways the services go about accomplishing their missions, which is basically the same; namely, 'capturing enemy territory and holding it'. And that difference--as the man said--is, "The Marines have a military culture focused on discipline." America takes pride and comfort (so we can all sleep well at night) in the fact that we have the best military force in the world. So why doesn't--or why shouldn't--that confidence extend all the way down to the individual service PERSON--meaning why should there be ANY difference between the FIGHTING ATTITUDES (not talking about technical skills) of the boot camp graduates of all the services? With discipline often being a key component to a mission's success, why don't the other services 'teach discipline' (beginning on 'day one') like the Marine Corps does? I'll tell you up front that answers like "It's too hard" or "It's unnecessary" are totally unacceptable. Another thing I've (too) often heard with regard to Marines doing (or at least saying they LIKE to do) everything on the cheap, is total b.s. That HAD to have started with some Marine general a long time ago: "Yeah, give the job to us. We can get the job done faster and better with NOTHING." So, the Senators smiled and gave us the job--and have been giving the Marines the job AND THE SHAFT ever since--as in, "You did it before with nothing so why can't you keep doing it with nothing?" Luckily, wars now require so much new technology that the Marine Corps (so I've heard) is starting to get new gear all across the board. To repeat (and all jokes aside about inter-service rivalry), while the missions of all the services may be quite different, in my opinion, there shouldn't be a nickel's difference between the fundamental fighting spirit of our nation's soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. In the aviation community, there's a saying that "the most useless things in the world are runway behind you, altitude you don't have, airspeed you don't have, and fuel left on the ground". Might that be extended to include "discipline you never learned"?

No mention of platoon 60mm mortars or the battalion 81mm mortars. It would be criminal to cut the 105 mm artillery.

What you have to remember though is the marines have to field what 65-75k troops? the army is like 750k troops if the marines dissapeared the army could cover down if the army dissapeared there is no way the marines could there is no way comparing them is silly they may seem on the outside to have similar jobs but all together theyre completely different the marines are more like a specialty branch where the army has to do everything everywhere yes they both fight, yes theyre both armed forces but can you imagine the problems if the marines had to grow to 10 times the size to take over what the army does? theyre standards would have to drop considerably to get that many people in the marines.

I'm on an army base with some marines around and the little bit of their gear that I've seen looks brand new, it even matches their uniform. Meanwhile I'm over here wearing OCP's with ACU gear.

I remember for Operation Dessert Shield, dad was stationed in Okinawa at the time, and his unit was in Kuwait less than 24 hours later. He never did say how they were transported, if by ship or airdrop. I never did ask either.

1. Army is a separate branch while the Marine is part of the Navy 2. Army has better equipment and the Marine have shit equipment 3. You can be a tier 1 Soldier or a straight up POG in the Army while the Marines pumps everyone up to be the best

I honestly think it all starts with a different mindset. Unless it is a "family tradition" and you are following in footsteps to join the Army, Navy or Air Force, the young man or woman who goes onto the Marine Corps recruiting is looking for a challenge. He or she knows that they are joining something different from the other branches and they will have to earn it. I hope it continues long into the future but I knew I was different when I graduated from USMC Boot Camp and saw my buddies who had gone Army or Navy. They knew it as well and said they had it much easier in their basic training.

We have also specialized trained guys like pathfinders for to prep airborne drop zones.. and forward deployed units within 8- 24 hours of a problem. The army is just like the marines. Our conventional forces can be on objective in hours of need. They train to deploy all the time and get units into battle. In korea we have to deploy conus units immediately to have them thier if Korea starts some mess. We practice railheading out vehicles all the time. Airborne units in the army can deploy immediately within ours and be on toward objective to recon or back up or respond to agression to NATo forces or like in Panama the response to Noriega

The USMC is also the only force that can take direct action from Presidential authority alone, or at least this was what a Marine told me. He said the USMC is the Presidents force which is one reason why the budget and population is limited. Please inform me further otherwise as I am sharing second hand info.

My dad a Marine in the 1960s, told me of an axperience like yours. He went to an Army base for whatever reason and said they had new everything. The latest and greatest and plenty of it. Whilst the Marines were still eating c rations from 1944 and, using all the old equipment from WWII . The marine Corps other motto! " we do the mostest with the leastest " Is what his DI would say in Basic Training ! Camp Pendleton.

A difference is the amount of responsibility need to junior Marines. Our NCO ranks start at pay grade E-4. Marines push responsibility down to the lowest rank. I remember reading about a army Major turning control of an Afghanistan valley over to a Marine unit and it was Staff Sgt pay grade E-6. I when with the wing on Okinawa was put in a operations chief billiet (E8) as a SGT - E5. Received my first NAM award for that. Later working with army received army achievement, and commendation medals and I thought that why for doing what I am supposed to be doing.

9:12 the first time I realized how poorly funded the Marines were was while I was working at an airport in the middle east as an Air Force mechanic- about 10 Marines showed up w/ their MREs and they all stayed in one tiny trailer on the airfield. They were there for at least a few months on rotations. We had an empty storage shack twice the size of that trailer and offered it to them, but they declined. Meanwhile I was on my 7-month "deployment" leaving the airfield at the end of the day to sleep in a 5-star hotel (literally) and collect $120/day per diem. So yeah... that's the funding difference between the Air Force and the other branches if anyone was curious, and that's also why everyone hated us.

The Combat Environment, Equipment and technology has change so much. I believe in the Future Conflicts Marines and Soldiers will be fighting together a lot more. This happened before in WWII in the Pacific. Army Units Joined the Marines during the Amphibious Invasions. Now that the Marines got rid of their Armor and Cut down their Artillery Units they will need the Army for Support.

You are right about the Army gear and supplies, we good the hand me downs from them are 46 choppers were Army they upgraded to the 47’s. in Vietnam when we were in the rear the chow was the same as out in bush just larger C-rat cans. When we were on base I would pile about 8 Marines on my mule and head to the Army base to have chow because they had sometimes fried chicken. Marines totally better fighters. With elimating armor and ancillary tasks, I believe the Corp should look at minimizing or even elimating the amphibious effort. I don't believe there will ever be amphibious landings such as in WW2 as it will all be air assault. Adapt and overcome, or die. Also, everyday Russian s live a hard life and they take national pride i n that. Totally different mind set. Some groups of people like a hard life, makes them hard also, sounds like the description of the Corp.
