what I liked the most about the multilaser scene is that the marine used a so-called "blind grenade" which basically a smoke grenade that releases charged particles with the smoke, so it also provides concealment against infrared and thermal imaging. that means that the marine himself also can't see through it with his own multi-spectral optics, so he fired the plasma pistol at the target's location by memory. the creator's attention to detail is on another level.
@aliaslanz86272 жыл бұрын
I always thought they could see through their own ordinance, but, in true WH40k fashion, this makes a lot more sense. thank you!
@PRC5332 жыл бұрын
Yep, blind grenades are designed to obstruct all sensory devices so they are a combination of flash bang, smoke, chaff and IR grenades. Like you said, the Marine got one solid look at the enemy position so he already knew where to shoot. Not for nothing, he makes the shot with a plasma pistol, not a plasma rifle. It's an impressive range even if he had a clear line of sight. And lest we forget, during the initial ambush with the multi-laser, the marine not only identifies the threat but puts accurate return fire downrange which was only blocked by the gun mantle. Probably my favorite part about this series is that the space marines are shown traditionally as walking tanks, they are heavy and imposing. However, they also showcase their speed, because despite weighting 5 or 6 hundred pounds, they still move insanely quick. We get to see some of that speed and it's terrifying.
@SomethingScotty2 жыл бұрын
@@PRC533 From my understanding Astartes cannot see through their helmets. I've always been told that the Marines are completely blind under their helmets, in the sense that they can't see out of them, but that their helmet scans and sees everything for them and then projects an image of what is being seen from the inside, which is why when that one Marine got his lens cracked and from then on you could see the red circles inside it constantly scanning around for new threats.

One thing that I feel that you tried to imply, but were not completely able to was how quickly they process a threat and react to it. The books like to describe it in vivid detail, but this is one of the first (of hopefully many) animations that portrayed it. One of my favourite scenes is the Hallway Autocannon Ambush and its not because of the 8ft warrior clad in armor that prolly weighs a literal ton sneaking behind the hidden gun team (yes, there were two people). The second Astartes in the squad, after witnessing a near miss by his battle-brother, takes a brief look at the bullet hole on the hallway and makes a split second decision to subtly angle his pauldron towards the unseen shooter to maximize protection because he knows that it is one of the thickest pieces of his armor and could reliably shrug off an autocannon round. Once glance was enough for him to determine the caliber of the weapon, it’s trajectory as well as its source, and the best course of action. All in a split second, while in motion. I’d like to see Chief do that without AI.
@gama3432 жыл бұрын
Chief did that without AI for 25 years, then when he finally got AI he consistently beat her to the punch in tactical scenarios, despite her nanosecond processing times, enough that she stops trying to offer advice before the start of the first Halo game, opting to concentrate on electronic warfare and intel gathering to support him, as she was designed to. Spartans might not be as strong or tough as Astartes, but they are nearly as impressive and effective in combat. A good number of Spartans pull off Space Marine level feats in battle quite regularly, and the Chief does about as well as a named Ultramarine. If they had slightly better armour and weapons, Spartans would be equal to Astartes in every way but lifespan.

ok, here is a quick (lol) break down of what is happening through out the whole serie Some important background: The Astartes (known as Space Marines) are genetically engineered super soldiers (were talking bigger, stronger, faster, with extra, redundant organs, the whole 9) and they are equipped with damn near the best gear the Imperium of Man (there's always exceptions) can make, Astartes are also known as "angels of death" and are basically mythical to most humans in the galaxy because they're so few of them (about a million total for an empire that spans the galaxy and oversees millions of worlds), when space marines get involved into anything, its usually a big fucking deal. The Warhammer 40k universe is an absolute shitshow, the Imperium of Man is pretty much a grab-bag of every dystopian future you can imagine, its highly xenophobic, religious and authoritarian, but it has to be because literally everything else in the galaxy will HAPPILY annihilate you (if you're lucky) or worse (and there is SOOO MUCH WORSE). Space Marines are mostly autonomous in organization, with only one real authority over them, the Inquisition (they have near absolute authority in the Imperium). The 3 universal threats to the imperium of man, and the reason why Space Marines exist in the first place are Xenos (aliens), Heretics and Daemons. The last important bit is that in the 40k universe, there's an parallel/alternate dimension called "The Warp", which is how ships travel across the galaxy at faster than light speeds, the problem with the warp is that its the realm of daemons and the gods of chaos, think hell, but on steroids, (actually, everything in 40k is on steroids) and very weird, its INCREDIBLY dangerous (star system destroying kinds of dangers in some cases) to fuck around with ANYTHING remotely connected with the warp.. Ok, now on to what actually happens in the series: A force of Astartes are intervening in planetary rebellion (rebellion happens often, doesn't usually require Astartes involvement), they deploy a kill team/combat squad (5 marines) to board a rebel ship in a boarding torpedo with the objective being to secure that weird psychic orb. They have one of those orbs on their ship "contained" already with an inquisitorial psyker linked/communing with it and Astarte Veterans (that's why they have white helmets) standing guard. It looks like the rebellion was likely caused by that orb in the first place, it has to ability to compel/sway others to its will and it tried to do the same with the marines (those pulses/whispers as they were approaching the orb) but failed because on top of their physical and genetic augmentation, Astartes also go through decades of absolutely horrendously brutal training and indoctrination. Then they get to the orb, looks like they are plugging in tech that allows the Psyker on the Astartes ship to eavesdrop on the orbs. Orb 1 is on the Astartes ship, Orb 2 is on the rebel ship and the conversation goes as follows: Orb 1: Who is there? Orb 2: I have failed, Brother. Orb1: We have all failed Orb 2: The Astartes deny our touch, you must break your seal (or shield) Orb 1: Impossible, we will never survive Orb 1: YOU MUST TAKE THEM (referring to the Kill team on the rebel ship) At this point, the inquisitorial Psyker tells the veteran "recall them immediately", the veteran gives the order and the marine in the background rushes off. Because the psyker broke concentration to warn the veteran, he left himself open to possession by Orb 1, Orb 1 breaks his seal/shield and tries to take over the psyker, the veterans put him down quickly, warp possession is absolutely no joke and if you ever dig deeper into the lore, you will understand that their reaction was in absolutely no way unreasonable or overkill. Back on the ship, the squad leader gets the recall order but before they can react, Orb 2 takes them. Inside orb, it appears that they the 5 marines are being reeled in by some squid like thing inside the warp but the entity is attacked by a big black smoke (could be a daemon, or it could be psychic backlash from its brother orb's new host being turned into chunky human salsa) and the squad leader re-materialize on an alien planet. As he looks out from his own pillar, you can see flashes of light on the other pillars out in the distance, the rest of his squad. and that's it for now. There is some speculation about what the orbs are, the best fitting theory being an technology from an alien species called the Yu'vath (if you wish to do your own digging), its also entirely possible that the creator (all of this was made by a single person) just made up his own alien threat too :D
@JasonMcAlpin4 жыл бұрын
I think the first Rogue Trader gamebook had a good explanation for the warp. It is a psykic storm. Emotions, ideas, thoughts manifest in the warp. This is a realm of every nightmare and horror mixed with fantastic beauty. So it is really hard to navigate when it is pushing and pulling on the ship. The beacon gives ships a landmark in order to tell where they were. There are still world out there that have been cut off for eons some get corrupted by creatures from the warp which leads to events like in the short where they get contacted. brought into the fold only to find out that there was some xeno among them influencing them all along. The Xenos in the short knows how to weave and manipulate the warp to some extent which is why they could pull the marines through it to another world. The person who made this is Syama Peterson.

The most beautiful moment in this whole series for me is the absolute commitment of movement when the Astartes stabs the psyker between the trapezius and pectoral muscle groups. What makes this substantial compared to any other region of the body to perform a stab is how many vital organs are completely disabled in a single strike, which also goes to show how precise and fundamentally controlled these guys are. 31:30 He doesn't "just" look they have comms inside their helmets we as the viewer just don't hear it. (creators choice done on purpose is my assumption). If you notice carefully throughout all of the parts of the Astartes series you see them communicating within their helmets very subtle motions and movements. some of the stuff people might have missed: Just like the thunder hawk that flew away in the beginning actually flew behind the enemy ship to take out the engines if you notice carefully you'll see a rocket enter the engines and then the engine lights are off. with melting metal and sparks coming out of the engines. and the thunderhawk flies over the enemy ship drawing fire power away. the drones take care of most incoming fire with a few rockets passing the first one the defensive cannon we see shoot taking out of the other incoming projectiles. And as they are flying in hot on the ship they use plasma lasers to melt into the hull. (watch the original its much better quality) 5:39 here you'll see 2 white lines tiny impact on engines and then fire from above the enemy ship trailing the thunder hawk draw away enemy fire towards the front of the ship. The details in this whole mini-series are incredible like blink and you'll miss a couple of things. 10:33 you can see 2 hooded figures spotter and shooter (hence why the space marine shot twice.) subtle to notice but the space marines don't waste ammo. 14:20 you'll notice the sergeant waiting for his marines to get into position and as they get ready reloading and all he gives a subtle nod probably 14:26 saying "go". 16:07 i assume its the same sergeant, right hand knife ready for use and has his plasma pistol in his left hand he shoots couple of times to distract then drops the weapon to directly switch over to his bolt pistol. my assumption is its faster to drop the plasma pistol and grab his other pistol then to holster it during combat. However! there is a error here. on 11:30 (you can't see it in this clip because of the cam being in the way.) on his left leg he has his Boltgun and in his left hand he's shooting with the Bolt pistol. But 12:05 when taking out the twin lazer on his left side his boltgun changed into a plasma pistol. There is so much more but this feels like rambling on. sorry for the long comment but the timestamps are there to watch it again.
@undefinedvariable80854 жыл бұрын
No, go on. You've stopped just before arguably the most interesting, and speculative, part. By the way, the space marine, in the error you're referring to, is not the sergeant and the same space marine we see getting confronted by the multi-laser later in the corridor. The sergeant is designated by the black chevron insignia on his helmet.
@Terminator4844 жыл бұрын
There's another error on the sergeant's left shoulder armor. It's clearly damaged by the multilaser attack and remains pockmarked through the psyker battle... then becomes flawlessly intact again for all of part 5. Where he takes chest damage also changes.

Thank you for such a deep, informative breakdown of literally the best Warhammer 40k animation ever made (imo of course). Astartes absolutely deserves more in depth analysis and discussion. Theres soo much material expertly condensed into a 15 minute short, I was blown away. The amount of detail in the animation alone makes it a video worthy of analysis. Then theres the great sound design, impressive cinematography, intense action, and fascinating story full of mystery and suspense. There is quite a lot of unspoken deep lore all over the "Astartes" short that builds up intrigue masterfully. This one video has directly, undoubtedly, sent thousands of people who never knew Warhammer 40k even existed, down the insanely deep rabbit hole that is the hobby, never to be seen again. Lost in the lore, God damn... This guy showed EVERYONE how its done. I smile when I think about the level of inspiration and/or hype he showered on the entirety of the fandom. I hold on to the hope that the "Astartes" project low key shamed the official Games Workshop animation department into putting much more effort and attention to detail into future projects. We can only hope "Astartes" will be held up as the standard for all 40k animations now that Syama Pedersen(the creator of Astartes for those who don't know) has officially been hired by Games Workshop. I can see Games Workshop's future projects being as good as Blizzard's cinematics if the planets align just right. Maybe if Syama is put in a position of authority he'll be able to change the culture over at Games Workshop when it comes to, at the very least, attention to detail in their future projects. I can go on...forev... Ohh my. I seem to have went on another fanatical rant about the glory of "Astartes"...Emperor save me, I need help. Seriously though, I thoroughly enjoyed your breakdown. If you couldn't tell, your video kind of got me hyped, and I mean HYPED.

As a representative of The God Emperor's Most Holy Inquisition, I'm starting to resent the whole 'we are all evil' stigma that revolves around the Imperium of Man. Their armies are brutal for a damn good reason! Chaotic mutations, heretics and filthy xenos are a direct threat to the citizens of the Imperium, who for the most part are GOOD people - sometimes horribly mistreated by their Governors, or living on highly lethal Death Worlds, but deep down good people nonetheless! And before people bring up the whole xenophobic thing, allow me to remind you just what the Imperium is up against.... First and foremost, The Ruinous Powers. Also called The Gods of Chaos. Lovecraftian, warp spawned entities that control daemons, possessed psykers and heretical cultists and are fuelled by the thoughts and emotions of every single living and semi-living entity within the Galaxy. The power of these so called Gods is so potent, that even knowing just a little bit about them will cause insanity within an untrained mind and horrific mutations within normal communities. When Inquisitors hand out the Emperor's 'Mercy' , it really does mean they are killing you out of mercy! Orks. Devolved, ultra violent, numerous, collectively psychic mushrooms created by an ancient race as bio soldiers in a war that happened back when humanity was starting to evolve. Eldar/ Dark Eldar. Space Elves, who quite literally murder fucked a chaos god into existence and have been on the run ever since. Tau. Don't believe them when they talk about 'The greater good'. Their so called Greater Good is a systemic caste system with the ultra elite ensuring that everyone has a place in their empire. And everyone stays in that place like good obedient little puppies. They mightn't be as brutal in their nature as the Imperium, but they are just as oppressive. Necrons... We've all watched Terminator right? And we've all watched Evil Dead right? Now combine those and mix in horrific technologies and a hatred for all living creatures that predates the birth of humanity and yeah you got Necrons!!!! Yu'Vath... Ya just met them! Tyranids. Seriously the worst of the worst! Spiky, smelly, slimy, scaly, spawning, slavering, acidic spitting, all consuming hives of ever evolving creatures, bio engineered to consume. Everything! People? Consumed! Fauna? Consumed! Flora? Consumed! Oceans? Consumed! Mineral deposits? Consumed!!!!!!! Entire planets are devoured leaving nothing but a cold, rocky husk. We might be willing to coexist with Abhumans, like Space Marines, Navigators, cyborg Tech Priests, Ogryns, Ratlings, Squats and even some breeds of Beastmen. But these creatures have either evolved naturally from humans without the influence of Chaos, or - in the case of Astartes and Tech Priests - been created through the wisdom of The God Emperor of Man or enhanced through the carefully protected - and slightly - lost art of science. These beings are aspects of humanity. Filthy xenos, heretics and chaos mutants and daemons have nothing but malevolent ill will towards the Imperium and will never cease their terror until we are destroyed.
@Zazar-g9l4 жыл бұрын
"Tau are just as oppressive" Yeaaaaah, if I must live under an oppressive regime I might prefere one that is not brutal. Basically, Tau are just like the Imperium minus the fact that they are brutal as heck and plus the fact that these guys, by nature, do not empower the malignant sides of Chaos (Humankind feeds Khorne, Tzeentch, Nurgle and Slaanesh by any action they take to fight it back. I remind you guys that Chaos was given birth truely because of the War In Heaven) It is because of the fear and ignorance in the Immaterium and warp itself that many people do not understand that no one will ever be able to defeat it. Necron may be merely able to "push it back" but I doubt they could premanantly destroy the Chaos Gods. To fight Chaos is to empower it, it is only by spreading calm, knowledge and peace that the warp may return to a more normal and passive form, just like before the War In Heaven

You keep saying "evil", demonic, satan etc like those concepts mean anything in the Warhammer universe. The axiom of the 40k setting is Order vs Chaos. Evil is such an irrelevant concept in a universe where the "good guys" (ie. the humans) will literally exterminate entire planets to stop one rogue psyker who has become a gateway for chaos. There are no good factions. In the dark future, there is only war, and the laughter of thirsting gods... ; )

For all the details you were so giddy about you missed some very important ones. For example, the service studs in the Sergeants head. 1 gold for 100 years of service and 2 silver, representing, either 10 years, or 50 years. This is a homebrew "chapter" of space marines, so it's left to speculation if he's 120 years of service, or 200. It's pretty much one or the other. The "black bigger demon cloud" that kills the Yu'voth squid dude, isn't some random bigger demon. It's the inquisitorial psyker's remnants lashing out to save the squad before they are consumed, a sort of "last hurrah". This is indicated, when the psyker activates his powers to spy on the orbs communicating, you'll notice all of the black smoke coming off and surrounding his vision. He saves his squad. You'll also notice, to the drum beats at the end, little flashes of light on the other pillars. His other battle brothers are teleported with him.
@31er_ohne_AMG4 жыл бұрын
Yea you could argue with that, but there are 2 things that doesn't make good sense 1. The Inquistor was long dead 2. The Inquisitor got disconnected before he died. It is some kind of warp demon who are lurking through the warp for psychic energy, it is maybe this thing the one orb is referring when they spoke to each other "break your seal" "we will not survive". Furthermore you can see behind the blue tentacle thing, in the backround, that there are more of these black clouds. But idk, could be the psychic backlash
@Two_Ravens4 жыл бұрын
@@31er_ohne_AMG I agree with your interpretation. The communication between the orbs seems to be a good indication. Fitting for the 40k universe, we see an entity that seems so powerful but when it comes to trying to exist in the warp there are much bigger fish lurking.

I should point out that the orbs are not Yu'vath. The creator made them up, along with the Retributors.

@@tomgeytenbeek2207 Not actually Yu'vath, but they were very much inspired by the Yu'vath.

In part 4 when they fight the psykers he talks about the other Space Marines dying but as you can see in part 5 they didint die they survived the "Force Push" from the psykers.

Yeah, I feel like that cheapens the victory but w/e

31:30 it’s muffled but you hear the inquisitor say “withdraw them immediately”, it’s not just a look that the space marine understands perfectly

I pictured that daemon getting blown away as being the line to the real world being severed when the Inquisitor got blasted by the Captain and bird boy. Excellent fuckin react video Marine.

Gotta love it.... And this video is F'n amazing. But numbers are all wrong. There are Only 5 Space Marines that board the ship in the boarding torpedo... None of them die until the end.... Astartes was my first real intro to WH40K... I've been reading up on the lore ever since. Absolutely nuts. Love it.

I've watched so many reaction/breakdowns of just this video. I fucking love it. I'm a Warhammer noob, but this shit gets so much deeper every time I watch it.
