The Tiny Yet Lethal US Drone That Turns Massive Targets into Rubble

The sun begins to set over the dusty, war-torn landscape of northeastern Syria, casting long shadows over the rugged terrain where a crack team of US Marines are stationed at a remote forward operating base. On their mission to root out remaining ISIS strongholds and ensure regional stability, today, the Marines have a new weapon at their disposal-the Rogue 1 drone.
Intelligence has pinpointed a high-value ISIS target hiding in a fortified compound on the outskirts of a small village. The compound is heavily defended, making a ground assault risky and likely to result in casualties.
Fortunately, the Rogue 1, with its vertical takeoff and landing ability, modular warhead, and high-precision sensors, is designed for this very type of mission. Its stealth and accuracy allow it to strike the target with minimal collateral damage.
The drone is quickly readied for launch and sent off into the evening sky, flying low and fast as it heads toward its target. As it approaches the village, the Rogue 1’s thermal imaging feature is activated, highlighting the compound's defenses. With stealth mode now on, the Rogue 1's engines run quiet, making it nearly undetectable as it hovers just outside the compound's defenses, gathering crucial data.
Inside the compound, the ISIS fighters are oblivious to the silent threat above. The Rogue 1 locks onto its target, a heavily fortified building where the target is believed to be hiding, before releasing its payload with a soft thud. The warhead streaks towards the building, and a moment later, a precise explosion rocks the compound, reducing the building to rubble as the guards outside scramble in confusion.

$94 k, per drone, and The Ukrainian army can do it at max 1k per drone. Somebody is making a lot of profit somewhere .

An Australian company is providing Ukraine with some drones which are mostly cardboard and rubber bands and come flat-packed. They not a quad-copters, so you have to hand-launch them and they can't really "land," but are still usable as a kamikaze drone. And it's even cheaper.
@matteusvirtanen392

To be fair the vast majority of drones that Ukraine is using are very barebones and are just converted civilian drones with add-on munitions. A lot of the drones used by both Ukraine and Russia in the current war are relatively speaking inaccurate and depending on the operators and EW environment it might take five or ten drones to hit the target. Even that being taken into account it is true that this drone is just a rip-off. If you add thermals, capabilities that add resistance to EW, a better and more reliable fuzing system for munitions and so on you don't go from a thousand dollars to almost a hundred thousand but even ten thousand dollars would be a reasonable amount of money for an advanced one way attack drone of that size. You also have to remember that even if you make the argument that a thousand dollar drone is a good investment the suicide drones work similarly to artillery in the sense that the first hit is very important because after that the enemy will seek cover and be harder to hit and if you need to carry three or fives times as many drones for a hit that is a logistical burden.

probably more than 50% of that was developmental funding. i would be surprised if they can't at least shave that down to 20k or lower if they ramp up production and issue orders in 4-digit ranges. From that point on stuff like hardendness against electronic countermeasures, reusability (as they can also drop, not just kamikaze), performance and versatility will play deciding factors in it's cost/benefit analysis. For example this one seems to have much better optics, which makes it more suited for survailliance and makes it easier to find targets. its very possible that it would be the mid-tier option in a High-Low cost mixed arsenal.

The military industrial complex is a monopoly. They can charge about whatever they want because thanks to lobbyists buying politicians and these companies hiring high ranking military officers, former politicians or politicians family/friends they have eliminated competition from the market.

So you're telling me that this $94,000 drone has about the same flight time and exactly the same range as my DJI mini 2 that cost 400 bucks. Hellfire give me a couple $1000 I can equip it with all the same cameras AND a grenade and accomplish the same mission. It does not take $100,000 weapon system to take out a target it takes a little ingenuity and common sense

Change the title. It's a loitering munition, not kamikaze drone. The pilot isn't meant to die and there is no sentient AI choosing to die. The thing is essentially a missile with return capability.

@mikemurphy5898 3 ай бұрын
Kamikaze drone is well defined in the military and it's not the same as a kamikaze in WW2....a word can usually does have more than one definition. The term refers to a device that is destroyed upon identifying a target, which it is. Making it a loitering, kamikaze drone, which is what he described it as. It would be *only* a "loitering" munition as you said, if it would drop a secondary, separate payload containing the explosive. No title change is required.
@bl8danjil
@bl8danjil 3 ай бұрын
@@mikemurphy5898 Wrong! It's a loitering munition. Even the military refrains from officially classifying them as "Kamikaze drones." It's because the pilot isn't meant to die and sentient AI isn't choosing to die. And that's by American English standards of the term Kamikaze. By Japanese definition of which the word derived from is nowhere near that. So no, this word does not have multiple definitions. Quit making things up. "The term refers to a device that is destroyed upon identifying a target" Dude, that's what missile is and your description is very broad. That also describes a "kill vehicle" which is usually referenceed in defeating ICBM's.

Airwolf? "Turn on stealth mode and the motors go silent!" Who know it was that easy? In the early 70's I remember members of our RC airplane club talking about proposing RC plane projects to the military - we thought the idea was pretty funny. But now in 2024 look where we are!

Trippy that some of the tech hasn't tricked down to consumer drones. Enough that companies in the U.S. could build their own. And wouldn't be so dependent on DJI. Seems like a financial opportunity waiting to happen.

The price is most definitely absurd. Even at the small quantity that the military acquired. Idk what the DoD's contract with this manufacturer is like, but I hope that per-unit price is stemming from the costs of R&D, and small number of units acquired. If the DoD decides to make a large acquisition of these drones in the future, hopefully the price per-unit goes way, *_WAY_* down. Otherwise that cost will unsustainable.

While I acknowledge that this kamikaze drone is far more advanced than a simply FPV drone it still strikes me at $94,000 per drone. We as in the US military need something that can do the basics like work in a high EW environment but still be highly resistant and maybe some simply AI targeting for final approach. We need drone in mass at $25,000 or less to make a real difference. Something has to give somewhere. At $94,000 the Marines won't be buying that many. Make it simply but deadly and functional/reliable.

I love this concept. However. Wouldn't it be cheaper to use this system as a pure reconnaissance drone and use this system to guide in cheaper less advanced kamikaze drones. This also means for the same prise as one you could get more hits on target using different warheads or even target more things in the area

Huh, so if the Russians think they have seen the worst of Kamikaze Drones, they ain't see nuthin' yet! Having a drone with a Gimballed warhead, that can run Silent, is a nightmare scenario. Plus is had various warhead payloads like Shotgun, HEAT, Traditional HE Kamikaze, plus it's also a scouting Drone with Radar/Lidar capabilities. Someone wanted to make a drone for all occasions, which does cost more than the one Ukraine is making and using but it can also do MUCH more, AND it is recoverable if it doesn't use it's payload, AND most importantly, Jamming won't work on it! NOICE!!!

the price is excessive. Its clear that someone is making $70k or more per drone. My vote is no. Also I bet that price is not armed, And I bet a simple frag that is dropped from this drone is $100k. They would be awesome, but not at that price its just another company trying to take advantage. These companies need to be forced to show their bottom line. Their real purpose is to make the most money from their products, and the government is not set up to prevent maximum profits. I say any company offering and selling stuff to our military gets 10% . period. 10%profit margin based on what we decide it should have cost because they also lie in bed with with their suppliers. They say we have to pay this much for that so we charge this much for it. And all the profits go to the same "investors" of each "company" War should not be business. If your company is in business to make big money from war you are a big part of the problem. If your company supports its country why is it trying to strip as much money as possible? Also we need to start looking at how much money through investors leaves the country. Its time to start striking back at this financial war that has been happening.
