”be baptised and die in battle” is a reference to the 30 years war, since it was so long that someone could be born during it and then die on the battlefields as an adult in the same war

Swedish here too and I kind of feel the opposite from this song. A man sent away from his homeland to fight and die for no reason while plundering the land of another people. While people home starve with no one to plow the fields. Combined with the English version of the song where lyrics tell how the war is meaningless, I feel this is a song of sorrow for those sacrificed for nothing. An apology to them from their future country men. I like Sabaton best in these songs. It's beautiful to see the singing for the lost. Those we failed by letting them be sent into war for the greed of their rulers.

This is a song very much revered among Sabaton fans. As you hear, all Swedish fans know it by heart and I know of several non-swedish fans to have learned it as well, in Swedish. Ostensibly about the 30-years war, yet it speaks to all soldiers and family all around the world. It usually affects the veterans watching it the most. Many tears have accompanied this song. There exist an English version, but the lyrics there portrays not the single soldier's perspective, but rather the war more from above. Therefore fans prefer this version.

First, I'd like to apologize to al my Swedish fans for messing that up. Second, I love that the ENTIRE crowd knew and sang along. Third, I think because of the fact that it was such an impactful, heartfelt song different from some of Sabaton's other music makes it stand out even more.

Excellent reaction. Sabaton has the ability to highlight both the horror of war and the amazing stories of sacrifice, honor, and duty where men rise up and demonstrate the best of humanity. For me, this song captures the willingness of men to fight and die for their homeland or a cause even as they question the why of it.

I like the fact that sabaton is able to do the balancing act between the two. Highlight those that made the battle heroic, and be somber when it comes to the battle itself. And I agree that fighting and dying for your country for a cause that you may question come secondary to the duty at hand

30-years war . Born to that war and died at the same war. Father and son alike, imagine ! As a side note,no other countries has had as many confrontations with each other as Sweden and Denmark. I think thoose wars made Sweden tired. Hence the long period of peace...

Nice reaction. I was at this show (sitting somewhere in the middle of the platform to the left from this view of the stage) Just before this clip started Joakim said no one carries around a lighter anymore but you all have phones, right? So turn on your light for this one. Then at the start here he said Totally wonderful, my friends, let's now sing together en livsstid i krig (a lifetime of war) The album Carolus Rex that they had released during this time is about a part of Swedish history called the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish) from a time when Sweden was a much bigger nation with ambitions of expanding. It was released with both a Swedish and English version, the difference being that the swedish one tells the story from our /a Swedish soldier's view while the English one is more from an outside observer's view. They had sold out the arena that night so we were 10 766 metalheads in the arena that night, needless to say, it was one hell of a night.

This song is about the Thirty Years War that was fought between 1618 and 1648. The Kingdom of Sweden was a major power in Europe at the time and this war was the bloodiest one until that time. The Swedish lyrics reflects the suffering of the individual soldier and the fact that one went to war, had a newborn child in the beginning but the war was so long that it happened that the child all grown up and had to fight in the same war where his father fought or still fighting.

Great reaction! 🤘 I highly recommend you to dive into the "Carolus Rex" album by Sabaton. It's about the Swedish Empire. This song is from that album. There is an English version and a Swedish. This song in Swedish has a different perspective than the English one, but all of the other songs are basically the same in English. This album is one of Sabatons best!! I also recommend their history channel on YT, where you get the story of all of their songs. I guess you prefer to do blind reactions so you can always watch the history episodes afterwards, on your own time or react to it. Greetings from Sweden! 🇸🇪

Nice reaction, from a person, who's (presumably) been throu ... more or less of those situs @ battlefield. Kudos ... !. As a FINNJÄVEL ,🙂this swedish version of this marvellous piece of Sabaton's production is closer to me, than an english version ... 'cause the swedish was the 1st foreing language (mandatory), which we had to learn @ school (from 7th to 9th grade). And yes .... I had forgotten most of the vocabulary and grammar, until i opened the swedish lyrics and sang along this piece. To me, it's a kind of a sad story, told by a young boy's (15-18 yrs) perspective, who propably? was an orphan (diseases and famine), or was given a way to a foster parents as a young child (that btw, was a very common thing, back in those days). ... "Men, vem saknar mig?" = But, who's going to miss me?. And "Men, vem sörger mig" = But, who's going to mourn me????. This song, if possible, is the most emotionally touching piece of all what Sabaton has made so far. Finally.... a word from finnish veterans mouth of yrs. 1939-1945 ... "Kaveria ei jätetä" = "Leave No Man Behind". Applied, not only in a battlefield ... it did continue during a peace time aswell. The band of brothers is for a lifetime, 'till the last roll call. All the best, from 🇫🇮.

Graet reaction, thanks! You've said that young people just after a high school go to the war and yes, they don't fit there. Here in the song about the 30-year-war 1618-1648, they definitely weren't after a high school, mostly farmers, but I know what you mean - the very young age. I was moved to know that such young boys, at their last high school year were all taken to fight in Gallipoli, Turkey. Sabaton sings about this battle in "Cliffs of Gallipoli"

Really great reaction, Thank You! This song, and the other Sabaton songs and History Channel about Queen Christina intrigued me, so I did more reading (Starting with Wikipedia). I didn't realize the history of New Sweden in the American colonies. In the middle of this war, in about 1638, settlers were starting New Sweden, on the Delaware River. My dates are sketchy, but Gustavus Adolphus died in 1638, leaving his little daughter as "King" then "Queen Christina." Though her father died fighting Catholics, ironically Christina abdicated her throne in 1654, to become Catholic. There's a film Queen Christina, with Greta Garbo. It's historic fiction, but the palace scenes are cool, with Garbo as Queen, steering the country towards the end of the war, the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

This song is about 30 years War between Catholics and Protestants in 17 century. Sabaton is swedish band, not german. They made a whole album in swedish, CAROLUS REX, there is also an english version of this album. "En Livstid I Krig" in english "Lifetime of War", because swedish soldiers were conscripted basically for life at this time.🎶🇵🇱

Thinking back to your reading of the lyrics, it's interesting how the translation you got translates fosterlandet into "motherland". In Swedish we use fosterlandet ("the country you were raised in" quite literally), hemlandet ("the homeland") and, a bit older and probably not as much used anymore as far as my experience goes fäderneslandet ("the fatherland/ancestral land"). But we really don't ever call it the motherland. We do, I think, have a preference for fosterlandet, which is really nice in my opinion since it can include people more broadly. It's something that works really well in this day and age when so many of us move around and sometimes find a new home in places we don't have relatives to tie us to.

It shifts over the years. Moder Svea or moderland was commonly used for old Sweden. Check out General von Döbelns speech to to the army 1809 where he says goodbye to our finnish brothers and mourns that the motherland has been crushed.
