It's extra hard for the Japanese workforce, since it's always been about your job being your family and your life until you die(not retirement. You don't get to retire, you only quit or you die) That sort of thing has spawned an unfair hierarchy of old people dictating policies and culture that are sadly out of touch. With the young people not getting a say in it until the old dinosaurs leave. The problem isn't that there's no work, there's always work. The problem is once you're hired, you're expected to slot into a cog that chaffes, is unfulfilling and requires you to be a social genius to get into the right places to get to the good life. If Marine's sister is anything like the stories she tells, she probably got her spirit crushed at how unfair the deck was stacked against her, got told exactly what path she could only take, and just imploded.

That's a tough situation. Speaking from experience building confidence by surviving minor setbacks without risking a major setback while you're in a vulnerable state is the way to go about it but finding the right situation is easier said than done and taking the first step is pretty scary. Volunteer work is a good option and while I wouldn't recommend it to a woman living in a big city because of safety concerns working nights is an option too.

From my personal experience, I feel like the main issue is that she needs a source of internal inspiration or motivation that she can keep relying on, like a goal or dream, to push despite difficulties. Otherwise, this may happen again.

Getting a hobby that requires one to go out is a good option. I personally helped 8 people with depression, 3 of them had even considered offing themselves with one of them actually trying, by inviting them to sign up for Salsa&Bachata lessons. They were fully functional between 1 and 3 months. Another is to get them a pet and have them live by this mantra: "The Pet must have something to eat. I might be starving and cashless, but the Pet must have her food." Taking on responsibility forces you to get off your ass and do something about it. Or as Jordan Peterson would say: "Seek the heaviest weight you can carry and carry it so at least you can say 'Useless as I may be, at least I can carry this thing from place to place' "

What a caring family, marine even decided to take care her sister when she's feeling really down on life, and even her parents is open to take her back home. Man I hope my parents and siblings are like that before, when I was on that situation, they really didn't care, I was homeless for 3 years, now I'm working as a farmer, an old couple took me in while I'm in the streets, ask me to be worker for a while in their small farm (its harvest season) its been years now they took me in ask an adopted son sadly they both pass away after years. I still take care of the farm, I never contact my real parents or looked for them, I guess the wound never heals, I'm happy now even though I'm alone again, I feel alive. I hope marine's sister found some light again in her life.

Jokes aside, marriage may not be a good solution for such a person. If you find a good partner, sure, but if you get married partly because you want to rely on the other person's income, that's gonna bite you in the ass in the future of that relationship. Marine already mentioned that her sister stayed at her old job just because she was afraid of seeking a new job. Now replace job with marriage; she would be the type to suffer silently rather than look out for her own interests. Fixing the root problem is the top priority, and hopefully all parties are aware of that.

It’s a little different in Japan. When women marry over there, they are expected to stay at home and perform household chores. Men are usually breadwinners when couples marry. It’s very old fashioned, and the younger generations are definitely fighting against that standard, but I don’t think it will change until the average age of the Japanese Diet (government) goes down so reforms can be enacted. I believe there is even a law that prevents women from working/earning full time wages after they’re married and have kids to encourage a household lifestyle. It’s supposed to “help” the declining birth rate, but many young women who want to stay independent are actually less inclined to marry because of it (which is actually detrimental to the birth rate lol). You can bet that most of the Hololive girls aren’t married for this same reason.

@@sorahow287 I'm warning against overly optimistic plans involving marriage. You shouldn't have to rely on finding a saint of a person to make your life better. Because that's by definition unlikely. It's like planning your retirement by buying lottery tickets. You should plan a marriage based on the realistic assumption that your partner has good intentions, but is still a normal human, with human strengths and weaknesses. And if your partner is a normal human, you will need a minimum level of self-sufficiency because even if the other side has good intentions, they can't read minds and can still make mistakes. You need the confidence to stand up for yourself when that happens for the marriage to work.

The moment both having an income became expected stateside, suddenly home ownership doubled in price and there wasn't a benefit to two incomes, it was mandatory. Kinda a trap. @@1stCallipostle but that standard shouldn’t just apply for women and it should DEFINITELY not keep them from doing what they want. Enforcing household standards by law is just bad practice, especially when you take into account Japan already has a ruthless business culture where people are expected to work 40+ hours a week. When you allow both parties of a marriage to provide a decent income, you can alleviate some of that stress from the sole breadwinner. Besides, housing prices are already ridiculous in Japan when you want to live in the city. Giving women more freedom to choose their own future isn’t going to change that.

It's good to see Marine care for her sister in this way but in my opinion before she gets a job or starts interacting with people, she needs to get a session with a psychologist or a psychotherapist to get over her trauma. No amount of work or social interaction will help a person if this person is not in a calm state of mind and not having anxiety while talking to new people.
