Q&A Series #9: What makes a "good" protein skimmer?

great video, I had tanks for many years, years ago.. I am just getting back into the hobby. The science and technology has come a long way. I love your instructional videos. They are very helpful. I stored a lot of my stuff for many years that now look obsolete compared to what is on the market today. I want a primarily "fish only" tank.. all predators of course, groupers, eels, angels and tangs. I am looking at a 120 glass 48" x 24" x 24" and I had a "life reef" set up for a "fish only" tank (75 gallon with a 125 gal filter set up), never did a water change in 4.5 years and never lost a fish. I think that was because of the great filtration that I put on the tank. I want a sump, protein skimmer, UV sterilizer combo to accomplish the same goal.... less water changes, less chance of fish dying. I like the looks of the Trigger Systems Sapphire CR44. I like high water flow. I have a lot of questions written down. Do you have customer service that we can call for advice in the set up configuration, before purchasing and finding out that I purchased the wrong things? Things like: Do I want as much water in the sump as possible, 9.5" setting and then I need a skimmer that can match that height. I want some highly effective equipment for my needs. Do they use Bio Balls anymore? Or is refugium the new thing? Or, both? Sounds like socks need to be cleaned regularly??? What goes in the socks? Crush Coral? Does anyone put crush coral in the sup anymore? I cant seem to find pictures with different combinations. This video is from 2015 and I am sure that there have been many advances since this video was published... any and all help is greatly appreciated...thanks.

i just bought a reef octupus classic 152 s, but it keeps overflowing. is this because its brand new.

It is likely the skimmer needs to break-in. Water changes and fresh carbon can help reduce this effect with new protein skimmers and be sure the water level is set at the lowest level inside the protein skimmer.

I have a 90 gallon aquarium and 30 gallon sump that I am putting together. I will be housing mostly soft coral with a few fish. What skimmer and return pump would you recommend for this setup. Thanks

Which skimmer you choose will depend on your specific bioload and space available, but some great options for that size system would be the AquaMaxx Q2 and the Reef Octopus Classic 152 S.

Would a Somatic 60 skimmer be sufficient for a 30 gallon nano thats well stocked

Hi, new to the hobby. I am now looking to add a protein skimmer. I have a 200 (UK litre) aquarium, running a betta 1620 (LPH) External filter (UV). I also have filter feeders, in the form of Feather dusters, and have about 20kg of Live rock. I am wondering what size skimmer would be adequate. Right now I do not have a lot of fish in as it's only been running since August last year with the first 2 fish (Green Chromis) introduced end December. However, I will be adding fish and hoping to keep coral in the future. Could you please reccommend a Skimmer which would be adequate. Many thanks.

Just to add I also have a Royal Gramma and a Dwarf Parrot fish which was added just this week.
