I had the thought that there were 2 Marios, where Mario Jr. is the one we play as since SMB1 and Mario Sr is the one in Donkey Kong with Crankey Kong (which would've then been Donkey Kong). Maybe I watched too much GT and am wrong after all. Either way, it would make sense. Mario could have taught lil bro Luigi carpentry, even without his dad having taught him (provided you are right).
