Pavarotti is technically the best tenor for me, but obviously technical skills aren’t everything. When it comes to opera plays like this, acting and emotion matters, too. Del Monaco’s acting was destined for Pagliacci. Pavarotti’s version was great and clean, but this one has more soul.

Opera is to me the highest level of singing. To develop a voice huge enough to fill a whole theatre and send shivers down the audience's spines, have them tearing up just because of your voice power. And Mario del Monaco is a perfect example! Look at him! Listen to him! I would have burst into tears! Oh, and he has the best laughter ever in this aria!

La piu' grande interpretazione in assoluto!!!! Altri tenori cantano questo brano anche molto bene ma lo studio maniacale del personaggio di Canio trova solo in Mario del Monaco la sua trasposizione vocale e scenica. Emozione allo stato puro, ascoltando le sue intervista al giornalista Biagi e vedendolo sulla scena si puo' ragionevolmente credere che lui volesse morire in palcoscenico.Ha sacrificato tutta la sua vita in funzione della voce per poter dare al pubblico recite indimenticabili.

If you don’t “get it” YOU have the problem, not those of us that do get it (you probably don’t get Magda Olivero either, you poor things). I’ve heard countless performances of this aria-on recordings from Caruso in 1902 to the CD era, and “live” from 1970 to the present. There are some thrilling performances for sure. But very few equal this and none at all surpass it. Titanic, STEADY, pitch-centered, effortless tones coming from a herculean throat with an involuntary technique that’s doing all the right things for him. To be able to sing with this inhuman intensity and still have your voice respond reflexively and functionally correctly is accomplished by very few. And if you think THIS is great, you should hear the No, Pagliacci non son to the final curtain. The audience did not know what hit them. This was live from Japan, by the way. That’s not a native Italian audience screaming like crazy for one of their own. It was a group of opera lovers who GOT IT.

Es cuestión de gustos. Pavarotti sabía frasear mucho mejor este aria. Y también matizaba. Del Monaco era muy ruidoso e histérico sl cantar. Su fraseo en este fragmento deja mucho que desear. Yo de esta época siempre prefiero a Bergonzi y Corelli. Me parecen mejores en todo. Incluso un tenor con agudos difíciles como Domingo era mucho más cálido y soberbio en la interpretación de este aria. Su voz era sensacional sí pero Del Monaco nunca conoció el pianísimo y eso fastidia escucharlo en forte todo el tiempo. Pavarotti y Domingo en sensibilidad, expresividad se llevan lejos a Del Monaco en este aria. Y no hay que demeritar a Pavarotti. Decía Karajan que sus cuerdas vocales eran tocadas por Dios. Y yo le creo. Fue el último de los grandes tenores italianos.

Y un cantante es más que voz y agudos. Tengo un Otello con Del Monaco y Tebaldi y en el lírico dúo de amor del acto 1 Del Monaco no canta nada amoroso. Se la pasa regañando a la pobre Tebaldi. En verdad su nivel para matizar era realmente pobre cosas que no tenian ni Bergonzi ni Corelli ni Pavarotti ni Domingo así no tivieran el portento de voz de Del Monaco. Repito, un cantante es más que voz y agudos histéricos
