Mario 64 before Odyssey had one thing going for it for me: the best freedom of movement for any 3D Mario game. However, once I played Odyssey, I look at it as a historical relic, where although the team had some creative ideas that worked well at the time, the antiquated camera movement in some spots and the horrible N64 controller gives no more reason to play. Finally, with the not-to-be-mentioned series, the first two games were solid, with my second being my favorite in that series. However, once this series says something along the lines of "Lol, you like fake things" and also insults your intelligence at an alarmingly increasing rate, I have to give up on such a thing.
