IKR, makes no sense how they're all in the original version but Jr isn't. There was enough room to take them out & replace them with Wiggler, Jr, Dry Bones, Magikoopa (Aka Kamek), and even Birdo. But only 2 of those from that list made it into the DX version, and the rest were just Splatoon. Fucking splatoon. This is Mario kart FFS. I would understand throwing in Sonic characters because they crossed paths before, in Mario & Sonic olimpics, but this is ridiculous.

It's in the deluxe version for the switch, not the standard version. Every 50 coins you collect unlocks a kart, wheel, or glider.
