Mario Kart 8 Review - BNGR!

OH GOD - the "how they 'handled' it" joke at 4:15 made me spit my drink out. Fucking hilarious. Also, great review - I'm THIS close to getting a Wii U after all of this stuff! However, as awesome as this game looks, and as happy as I am for Nintendo pulling themselves out of the decline, I find it a little sad how after nearly 2 years of the Wii U being out - for a system that prides itself on being innovative and different among other consoles, made by a company that prides itself on being innovative and different among other companies - that the game that potentially saves the Wii U from the gutter is another Mario Kart. I dunno, am I the only one that finds that a little sad? :-/

And Hey I love the the Wii U, it's probably my favorite game system I've ever owned. The innovation is there, it's just in the indie games and e-shop. Plus more games are starting to use the GamePad and it's probably better they don't blow their load with the game pad because there is sooooooooo many control choices for like every game on the thing. I don't understand why they have vertical view for 2-player IN A MOTHER- FUCKING RACING GAME. Me and my friend were almost getting sick and slamming into walls because of the narrow FOV in some tracks. They should have given the option to change it to horizontal.

@ 7:59, with the switching of controls issue, for the gamepad you can switch without pausing. It's on the bottom right hand side of the screen that has a icon of the gamepad. Just press it and there you go, you either have tilt or stick controls and can switch without pausing. I'm not sure if this was played up for a joke, but I just wanted to mention it just in case anyone didn't know that.

Actually... I disagree on the balance part. I feel like this game is VERY unbalanced. Red Shells were over buffed, thanks to their better homing, and ability to fly... plus, with the 1st place item holding nerf, there's NOTHING you can do about the 2nd placer hitting you with 3 Red Shells. Not to mention... the Super Horn or whatever is so rare, it's not really gonna help you out. Also, the new way the items are distributed is... off. I swear I got the Crazy 8 item in 4th place, then as soon as I got into 2nd, I got a Triple Red Shell, and blasted that poor 1st placer out of the race. Another thing to add, being in 5th place and below REALLY sucks in this game, since if you're in that pack? You rarely get out of it. Since there's SO many Red Shells back there. And they spin you out almost as much as the Blue Shell does... yeah, the leader is likely gonna get a huge lead thanks to that. Couple this with the coin system, and you constantly losing them back there... yeah, the leader likely has 10, and you have about 0. Last, but not least... we're back to Mario Kart Wii's character balance. Lightweights are not very good, and heavy weights reign supreme. *Sigh* Sorry about this rant... I just feel that the item system in this one is kinda bad.

I played the game a lot in online mode and I also think that the new item system is really unbalanced. If you aren't in first or second place you should be prepared to get bombarded with a shit load of items. The item distribution is really luck based (I got a bullet bill in fourth place several times). Green shells and red shells are overpowered and in fact stronger than the blue shell in this game. The recovery time if you get hit by a blue one is much faster than if you get hit by a green or red one.

Mezurashii5 Actually, no. Since the Blue Shell in this game is a lot more rare. Red Shells on the other hand.... Well, I have a little nickname for this game sometimes. "Red Shell Hell". Seriously, it's way too good in this game.

_Data_Drain_ I agree that auto aim shells should be kinda weak, but blue shell being rare isn't a reason to make it very good. I feel like the blue shell is just a little above being "right", there's no reason to bring it into the red shell discussion imo.

You're right. It's nearly impossible to come back from 5th place or below unlike previous games. All you get are mushrooms or stars, which don't help very much. As for red shells, I think that Mario Kart Wii got them perfectly: you can avoid them with skill, but they can still hit you depending on where you're at. Mario Kart 8's red shells, however, are a bit too common. I still think that MK8 is the most balanced compared to previous titles because nobody is getting screwed over by Blue Shells every 5 seconds.

I think you pretty much tackled the high points and low points (battle mode...) about Mario Kart 8 pretty well. The only other thing I will add on to "disappointments", is that Mario Kart 8's item system is not balanced. You can say it's more fair than MKWII, and I would agree in terms of like Blue Shells and stuff, yes it is. However, one thing MKWII did right is that in later places, you'll get great items to help you catch up, like gold mushroom, bullet bill, and etc. The biggest problem in MK8 is the items you get in later places. You can be in 10th place and you'll get get a single banana, get a single green shell, or simply a coin. While people in 3rd, 4th, etc. can get Triple Mushrooms, triple Red shells, so on, and I don't think that's fair. It can be so hard to catch up when that type of stuff happens (which happens a lot more than you think). But I digress, MK8 is still a great game.

I just hope that since the Wii U is finally becoming the console a lot of people want, people do buy games that are already out. Amazing titles like Pikmin 3, DKC: Tropical Freeze, Wonderful 101 and Mario 3D World should still be bought by every Wii U owner.

I may be in the minority here, but I think that Battle Mode can be pretty fun at times if you play Frantic Mode online. It's just that the maps suck compared to classics such as Block Fort. As for the interface, you forgot to point out that the default option after finishing an offline race is "View Highlight Reel", which can get annoying. I sometimes hit the option by mistake!

Balrog, at the time of watching this and trying out the IGN 60fps video, the 60fps was having trouble loading and it was all grainy and what not. I find it funny that your 25fps video looked better than IGN's 60fps video. Good review. I'm glad Nintendo is stepping up their game. I just bought a Wii U due to the hype from E3. First time I've bought a console that isn't at least half way through it's life cycle.

You want a tutorial for MARIO KART? I didn't even know about star rankings going down from higher CC's, but I didn't mind going through everything on 50CC. I got triple stars on all 50cc cups my first time through, it gave me a chance to see the new courses, and made me feel good to hold first for so long after going through MKWii. I'm looking forward to 200CC though!

One thing nobody mentions is that after the race it doesn't show the times no more. I really enjoyed knowing my time on the grand prix. I liked seeing how close the other players come to beating or tieing with me. Minor gripe but why? Whats ur opinion?

i loved this game, and ive played every entry since Double Dash! i totally agree with 100% of what u said. the one thing i'd add is, did u notice that with some bikes, (and maybe the carts do it, too, i just haven't used those as much), go flying off in the direction you drift? im not shore what u'd call that, but it really pisses me off!! my one complaint, though.

I think you glossed over the serious issue concerning the rubber-banding in this game's campaign... Simply put, the AI is MERCILESS on 150cc, with luck being a determining factor in winning races over actual skill. And then we have Mirror Mode, wherein the AI is so brutal it'll do literally ANYTHING to sabotage the player, from colliding with you on an anti-gravity curve so that you boost off the track to suspending an item in a flying section only to toss it at you during the final lap, killing any chance you have at winning whilst Lakitu slowly places your kart in the track and the competition passes you by. It gets annoying, to the point where I'd rather just keep playing Online, wherein I actually have a decent chance of winning. Oh, but the gameplay itself also suffers from some issues... For one, drafting is extremely abusable in this game, and shockingly more overpowered than snaking, though it does take some keen observation in utilizing it properly, and hopping while boosting also retains some of your forward momentum, essentially propelling you at incredible speeds, though again you need keen observation and skill in order to use it properly. Regardless, this is one of the better kart racers out there, and definitely worth picking up a Wii U for.
