I have no idea why people are bashing the new Rainbow Road. I haven't played the game yet obviously. But to me it looks amazing and kinda challenging but not frustrating. I love the customization in Mario Kart 7 but yeah it can be kinda irritating because they don't give you enough to pick all your stuff. But good review I'm so pumped for this game!!

Plus, bear in mind the reputation of the Rainbow Road being a fucking nightmare, yet also the pinnacle of the brilliance in the game's mechanics. This rainbow road disappoints compared to other rainbow roads for what it offers. More than bad, it would be subpar.

VladNorris the design is the best yet. you can tell that without having to play the game, all rainbow roads are easy in my opinion it's just become a thing to pretend they are the hardest levels. only thing making them hard is the fact that they have no fence thus making it easy falling off but apparently falling off the stage isn't a big deal in mario kart 8 so I see why they designed this rainbow road this way. and this rainbow road even has several "gimmicks" which are the conveyor belts, shooting star, boosters and anti-gravity, not to mention, the visuals are mind blowing and the whole thought of it being the headquarters of mario kart TV makes it even more special. From my experience, the rainbow roads in past games are just a rainbow colored road

Cunyli Aside from the fact that two different people reviewed those games.. Look at why he said "He liked it a lot" as opposed to saying "He loved it". Battle Mode wasn't what it could've been, the UI is a little awkward on the gamepad, saved presets with karts would've been handy, and 1st Place is mostly defenseless with the sheer amount of "coins" you get. These criticisms are comparing the current product with both its potential misses and with previous entries in the series, which is what you should do when looking at whether this Mario Kart is worth buying or not. How it stacks up against a 2D sidescrolling platformer is completely irrelevant.

And again, you've proven to be a very fair critic, pointing out your personal opinions while backing them up quite well (for example, I never thought about how the item system could make first place even more annoying until you pointed out that possibility here). It's to decrease course lag. If they where on the course they would be spinning and they would have shadows and it would lag.

My opinion is that this whole liked it a lot/loved it label in the end defeats the purpose of not scoring the game. How about just saying how you felt without putting an image/label to go with it? Also make it an ending paragraph to sum up the whole thing as opposed to one word.

I totally understand that this is not the case, but it may bring the wrong idea to other people. I think leaving any sort of one word or number to describe a game should be stopped. My Jaw dropped when I watched the Mario Kart 8 review ScrewAttack put up they gave it so much hate and then gave it a 7/10 and I looked in the comments and I saw some people say they won't buy the game because of what they said in the review. Andre's review was honest and and didn't discourage you from trying the game out and he gave it a :D liked-a-lot which is really a good way to end off a review and made some people want the game even more including myself. Tbh I was completely open to the new items cause they acted like they did in Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed where you have 1 item but no reserves and that made the game entirely skill based and that's what made me love that game and im sure I'll love playing Mario kart 8 as well. Good job on the review Andre!

Phil Coast They'll just look like a clutter of lines. Several courses in MKWii did. The maps were just lines overlapping and you couldn't tell what parts were which.

I agree with Andre that Rainbow Road was a TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT in this game and that the Balloon fight is not as cool as the ORIGINAL Super Mario Kart Balloon fight unfortunately. - _ - Also, I was one of those people who actually "clapped" when he said that Blue Shells are not as frequent anymore. XD

I'm actually extremely glad about the lack of defenses in first place. In MK7, if you didn't get a blue shell, it was absolutely impossible to take out 1st place. Defense stalling always made it crucial to get a blue shell in order to make it to first place, but if you didn't, then the person in 1st place would stay there for ever, leaving you with no chance of getting past him.

It's funny how many of the things he critizised are things that I'm looking forward to. I like testing different kart pieces, I like how the first place is now much more based on skill and I like the tracks for battle mode.

In the Coin Power-ups Defense, you don't drop the item when hit by a shell, making you only losing one coin and not have to worry too much in recollecting them again. I've seen WiiFolderJosh do this when he was playing this game on The Fold. I'm still glad the coin item is back.

Indeed, but it's not the losing coins aspect that's the problem. It's the whole "getting hit with no defense" thing that's the issue =)

I haven't played MK8 so I wouldn't know for sure, but judging from the outcry and complaints I've heard from other reviewers outside of GameXplain, the new battle mode is far inferior. I don't own a WiiU so it doesn't matter to me either way, but still.

The last time I enjoyed Battle Mode was in Double Dash. If they were going to make a Battle Mode out of racetracks, they could've tried something different other than Balloon Battle.

Historically these actions never pan out. I think Phillips has a case here, but Wii U won't be banned. A similar suit (with a much stronger case imo) was filed against Microsoft for Xbox 360, but it never panned out. Don't worry about it.

A lot of gaming publications receive "review copies" of games a few weeks in advance so they're able to play it prior to release then post their reviews and opinions when the embargo has lifted, allowing people to see a general consensus on the game before it has been released.

The review embargo being lifted 15 days before the release hints strongly that Nintendo expected great reviews and wanted that time to build hype. Games where the review embargo is lifted the day the game is released are usually a bit dodgy. Nintendo is probably confident enough that early reviews will cause more preorders instead of cancelled preorders.

to be honest this liked system is not that far from the numbered rating system. with loved being on the top and hated being the lowest score. that being said i guess i "liked it alot" is an 9 out of 10 on the scale

I think the new item system sounds great. Far too often is there someone in first with the Triple Banana dragging behind his butt, and a Banana/Shell to spare in his inventory. Hell, Blue Shells were the only thing that could take these guys out most of the time in MK7 online races.

TheDragonDAFan Honestly you'd be comparing a game to a console so I'd say it's not a fair comparison. On one hand you have a console already bundled with Wii Sports and a myriad of features built in. On the other hand you have Mario Kart 8, which is a solid game, but overall is a 60$ paperweight without a console to play on. I recommend a Wii, unless of course you already have a Wii U (then go with Mario Kart 8).

The MK7 Customization is a personal opinion. I actually prefer it over the set cars since it makes every vehicle have unique stats and you can make it match or contrast your character's stats. i could keep rambling about it, but im just glad to see it back *****

I love the coin item because in single player when your competing in circuits for gold trophies it helps holding it so when you get hit in first place right before the finish you can recover coins better so you end with ten

Oh, I was so happy when they showed that the parts system was going to come back on MK8. I think it adds another layer of diversity and it's a breath of fresh air the game needs. The parts system is what kept me excited to keep playing MK7. It's hard for me to picture future mario kart games without this feature and I would very disappointed if Nintendo decides to do future mario kart games without it.

if you want a real next gen game with value here is 3 things you can do. 1 trade in your ps4 and get the wiiU bundle MK8 2 trade in your xbox one and get he wiiU bundle MK8 3 save up and get a $329.99 wiiU bundle of MK8 trust me people are going to be all over this game.

Great review! About the item system: I'm sure it's WAY more annoying to hold first place in single player mode now, but in multiplayer mode, I feel like it helps keep first place from holding a monopoly on that position. First place shouldn't be unstoppable. So, as annoying as it is for the player in first, it now gives everyone more opportunities for first place.

Hey guys, a suggestion for your next (if possible) MK8 video. Try using your before race videos and combine them all for a 32 track video with all the tracks of the game in it. I knew it was already made, but it wasn't a full lap and it was using a little footage for the direct. This one could be actual footage of your guys tracks that you raced.

Only started playing Mario Kart since the DS version and I really loved it especially the versus mode and the mission mode. Then also bought Mario Kart 7 last year and just bought Mario Kart 8 recently. Mario Kart 8 is now my favorite as it favors skill more than luck. I mean it's really annoying when luck prevents you from earning 3 stars on Mario Kart 7's 150cc cups. And since Mario Kart 8 focuses on balancing of items and skills, it really helped me to excel in online mode. Ranking of Mario Kart games from the ones I've played. 1. Mario Kart 8 2. I don't see how adding the horn would change blue shell mechanics that much. Mario Kart Wii had 6 (!) items that would dodge the blue shell, 7 counting it itself, one of which does not appear in this game.

Quick question about the Coin System: Can you rack up coins while playing multiplayer, both the 2 Player online and the 4 Player local offline multiplayer modes? Biggest problem of MK7 was the grinding for the Kart Parts. Can you speed it up by playing with friends on the same console?

You dislike that you can customize your kart? Seriously? It is a great aspect of racing games when you can do that, it means even if you have 12 Yoshi's racing all will be different and it also means you can better tailor a kart to how you like to drive or to how the course is laid out. All you have to do when you find the configuration you like is just quickly scroll through and select it again. This is the type of complaint that always leaves me confused

Same here. There were a lot of parts of the game that I loved, but others that I hated, like the item system and the battle mode. The courses are fun and it's really exciting to play on the whole. It's not the best Mario Kart game, but it is certainly one of the best games the Wii U has to offer. 8/10

I rather like the customization features in both MK8 and MK7. I could care less about how the parts affect the stats, all I care about is the aesthetics. I also had the same issue you had on Bowser's Castle in Mario Kart 7 on its Rainbow Road where I fell through the course. It was at the part just before you're about to jump on the moon. It was a wavy road just like that one, so that's probably what caused it. Anyways, great review, Andre!

5:40 I thought it would be obvious to Nintendo to implement setup slots. Guess I'll have to memorize a good setup, then. 5:58 Still hooping for arena-like stages for Battle Mode as DLC. 8:17 I would go as far to say that (considering the use of new features, visual update, -and that I didn't play MKSD or MK7-) it's practically 32 new courses. Being in first is always supposed to be hard in Mario Kart, I think the new system is great as items become more and more valuable and you need to really use them well to excel. In previous games you just throw away items at the first chance because you know you will soon get another.

Honestly making 1st place being vulnerable to things besides Blue shells is great. In things like 7 and Wii, first place was generally invulnerable because every single item blocked shells and second and third didnt get red shells that often. It ended up whoever got a somewhat large lead in first just shooting away cause nothing was there to slow them down.

For the item system,cart selection they should have an option if you want 1 item at a time for a challenge. Selectection same thing instead of making it all the time. And with rainbow road the lap system should also be optional like if you wanna fo the whole course as 1 lap it should let you

My only slight complaints is the Battle Mode and Baby Rosalina/Pink Gold Peach. Not that big of a deal, but could've been better, but I'm just gonna grow some balls and move on. Everything else in this game looks solid. This will be my favorite game in the series next to Double Dash

+ Excellent gameplay and variety of kart racing style + Outstanding visuals, great in details and very polished game + Marvelous soundtrack designed for every track and we can enjoy it while we are racing others. + Phenomenal track design, different ambients and the total new anti-gravity sections with those fast boosts tricks. + The online looks great with tournaments, friends races and smooth online gameplay. + Multiplayer madness, great for weekends. beer + mario kart, + The HD looks marvelous 1080p and 60fps :) + All this Mario Kart Tv stuff and all the social media with it. - The online has missing keys. - The battle mode isn't that spectacular = Overall this is a MUST BUY, and this is the game that Wii U owners are been expecting to play and this is a reason to buy a Wii U period.
