5 ways to improve the blue shell: 1. ONLY appears when the person in first is way ahead of the group. 2. When you get a blue shell, it locks on to the person in first, so he/she can't be cheap and drop out. They can only try to get the guy in 2nd the hit with them. 3. Blue shells can't be held for longer than 30 seconds. It will auto fire afterward. This is so people don't bring it into 2nd place and use it or so the guy in 1st (who is way ahead) won't hit a banana (still can happen), then a blue shell, and be sent to last. 4. Blue shells can't appear more than once in 1 race. 5. Blue shells can't show up during the final lap. This is so you don't get hit at the very end.

1. That happens already in 8. 2. Dropping out is still less-than-ideal for a player being targetted. If anything, dropping out makes it better, because then 2 players are slowed down as apposed to 1. 3. If you can keep a blue shell into second place, you deserve to hit the guy in first with it. 4. This will only make when you are hit by one more annoying. 5. Makes it even rarer than before, meaning they will rarely show up once in a race.

here is my version: 1. it doesn't always happen in MK8, in fact, it hit me like 10000 times in close games, ultimately costing me the win. so, it SHOULD only appear when 1st place is really far ahead. 2. it should have a BIGGER blast radius, so it doesn't make the one in 1st automatically lose, but make EVERYONE around him/her get blasted too, making it more fair. 3. it should wait up to 30 seconds, but normally, that would waste other valuable items if you do. 4. it should appear very rarely again, but not once a race. 5. i agree about the "final lap" thing, but maybe, it can appear uncommonly in the 1st lap, rarely in the 2nd, and the rarest item in the GAME in the 3rd.

Although I agree, the first one can be avoided if you look for it on the gamepad every once in a while and hit the breaks if you see one coming. It's not ideal, but it'll save you a couple seconds.

To be honest, the blue shell is my favorite item in Mario Kart. It adds a lot of fun and variety to the races because you never know who will eventually be in the first place and if one player stays first throughout the race. Furthermore, I like the sound when it dashes at cyberspeed past other players, especially where it strikes through them like in Mario Kart 7 & 8. A mighty item which eliminates every obstacle in its path. Not to mention the explosion on the leading place, hitting all nearby players. I like that :) Man, I just love this item since it first appeared in MK 64. In my opinion a great addition to the Mario Kart series!

The blue shell messes you up way longer and worse then the red shells (even tho I think the red shells are op) the blue shell isn't really a challenge for me in mario kart 8 cuz it hardly shows up which is good. I am more worried about the red shells, green shells, the bob-omb, and the lightning now.

Wormy The thing is that the blue shell doesn't distinguish from the red shell how it did in the games before MK8. And no, the blue shell doesn't mess you up way longer than the red shell, at least in Mario Kart 8. In fact, I didn't notice *any* difference between their strength. I would have found it better if the blue shell had been used less frequently, but with more power on the strike. That way it wouldn't be as annoying and unfair as it was in the past Mario Kart games, and it would be a special item, not just a better red shell.

In MWii, if the blue shell misses you (fall off the track at the right time while it comes) then the blue shell will turn around, and then hit you. Edit fact: It can very rarely be used in Battle Mode (mentioned in the video).

Honestly, I don’t hate this Item. In fact, it’s my Number 1 Favorite Mario Kart Item. Why you ask? Well, for one, it doesn’t bother me when I’m hit, I’m always able to recover. Second, it’s really effective in for you if your the one who threw it, especially in the newer games, like MK7 and 8. And third, it just looks cool as fuck. I’ve never hated this item, I love it.

It would be cool to have the two versions of the blue shell combined. A blue shell that travels along the ground and can hit other players (not as strong as the explosion). When it finds the player in first, it goes up and crashes into the player, making a explosion, sending the player very high.

What I said is that the players not in first should not be as punished as the player in first place. Also I think the explosion damage from the older versions is cooler.

Mike Anthony I understand how it can be annoying at times, but that could easily be rectified by inserting some code that prevents a blue shell from being acquired for 15 seconds after one had already exploded. The races are rather short, with the longest one I've been in, not counting Rainbow Road in MK 64, was around 3 minutes. That would mean that at most, 12 blue shells can show up. I would also add another bit of code that would not allow blue shells to appear within the first 15 seconds, knocking that figure down to 11.

I just played Mario Kart: Double Dash the other day. I got a blue shell in 3rd place (not 4th as it says in the video) from an item box, as rare as that is. Another interesting fact: in that game, blue shells only appear on 150cc and Mirror Mode difficulties.

The Spiny Shell may be the most hated item in Mario Kart, but to me, Lightning is worse. It is weak-sause in SS and 8, but I love how strong it was in DD. I miss when it acted like a police car when it had the siren. There is a certain item box in two of 64's tracks that give you the Spiny Shell EVERY time.

Honestly I like how the blue shell works in 64 and SC since it allows players to try outrun it for the entire race if they are skilled enough while also sending them flying in the air if they mess up or get hit at all while it is dragging behind them. If you want a example of this in a modern kart racer then look at the SPD from Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart or SRB2K

Nobody did a ranking of the blue shells from least to most powerful, so here I'll do one with every mario kart game I've played (the ranking is based on how much the blue shell is a threat to 1st place in every game) : 4. 8/8dx : The explosion does the least amount of damage out of this ranking, as it makes you tumble like a red shell, and being hit by it while on glider makes you tumble like a banana. It also has the easiest way to be dodged (that doesn't imply an invincibility item) as well, because of the Super Horn being added, and the blue shell in itself being more rare. It DOES however have the hardest mushroom dodge, since it has a 3 frame window on a 60 fps game. 3. Mk7 : This blue shell is much slower, and the mushroom dodge is easier than in 8, plus you can see if someone has a blueshell in hand on the touch screen, making it the second easiest blue shell to avoid. But this game doesn't have the Super Horn, and getting hit in 1st place by it makes you tumble TWICE, in a random direction that isn't forwards, and most likely in the direction of the pit right by you. Yes, this blue shell is like getting Bulleted in Wii. Honestly a more punishing blue shell since it ALWAYS throws you off the edge when it has a chance, and tumbling backwards takes FOREVER because that game is very slow in general. Plus getting hit by it in a glider is a full stop, so you either fall forever before landing and have to fully reaccelerate on the ground below you, or fall off because it completely stops you over a pit. And there are a lot of gliding sections in this game. It's ranked lower than DS because you can pull Shrooms in 1st place in this game. The most punishing Blue Shell in any game, but you really have to be unlucky to get hit by one. 2. DS : This blueshell makes you tumble upwards and has higher probabilities of arriving. But it also is easy to avoid because you see if someone has it on the touch screen, so you can brake and let 2d place take it. It is much faster since it's the winged version, so it is a bit harder to dodge that way than in 7. You can dodge it with a bomb or by drifting, but with all of that said it's still placed higher because, like I said earlier, you can pull Shrooms in 1st place in 7. Maybe if it weren't the case, we would've had a tie. 1. Wii : It's not even remotely close. This game's computer BREED Blue Shells to a point where it's not even funny. The Mushroom Dodge window is very generous so there is at least that, but honestly the sheer quantity makes it terrifying to be in 1st place. You cannot outrun the blue shell like in 8 200cc, you cannot pull a clutch mushroom like in 7, you cannot skillfully dodge it with a drift like in DS, no. Here the Blue Shell comes to you and there is nothing you can do. The only situational ways you can dodge it is with a banana on a very high ramp and on a cannon, where there are very few spots to do so. Maybe a miracle can happen and you get the item box glitch which gives you a Shroom after your 15th box in a race, but it's super situational and doesn't happen many times.

I wish charectars would get worried if a blue shell is on the way at 1st, then charectars freeze in shock as the shell spins around and then panic as the shell stops in place and charges in.

In 7, its VERY hard to drop out so if you see it coming and your in first its likely too late to drop out, that is why you need to check the bottom screen as often as possible.
