Mario Kart Wii - Breaking The Limits: More than 12 players!

This was supposedly an almost impossible mod to make, given how much Mario Kart Wii is built around the number 12. It's everywhere, and it affects the size of structures in memory, loops in the code, memory layout, and in some places, even entire code layout. Given that, expanding the player count beyond 12 without severely corrupting something was not something considered feasible without some automated tool helping.
However, since it's been something I always wanted to try, I just decided I'd give it a go anyway. After grinding away for hours and changing tons of memory locations, we have ourselves a semi-working 13 player mode. This is very much a work in progress (it even crashes during the video), but it's a good proof of concept, and indeed a little teaser for what may be to come in CTGP's future.
I do not know when this will be done, but presumably I will add it to CTGP when it is, assuming it doesn't break anything too badly. It's also not ready for release in cheat code form either (yet). I do intend to expand to more than 13 players in the long run, but I want to get this working properly first before I try. As you can see from the video, it's still all a tad weird :P
Once I get 14 players working, it should be easy to get up to 255 players from there if I really wanted. Probably won't go that high because I hate to think what that'd do to the framerate, but hey :P Online will be a whole different beast though. Not looking forward to trying to make that work, but I'll do it :P
One thing to note as well: The 13th place graphic is custom, designed by me. It is not an unused graphic in the game. It will be replaced with a better one soon designed by syara!

So, I think I have a theory as to why it crashed... Its a bit outlandish and most likely wrong, as I have no idea how this thing works, seeing as I've never actually seen the programming for the game, let alone item timings. My theory is that a player used a Bullet Bill or a Shock. My guess on the bullet is based on the time that the bullet is supposed to last. See, when a player goes into first in a bullet, the bullet only lasts for a few seconds longer, whereas in a lower position, it will last longer. My guess is that the bullet calls for a script that tells the game how long to stay in for, and how to detect if it's in a position to end. I'd guess that it uses memory addresses attached to where the player is based on position, and because there is an extra player the game doesn't account for, it returns a null reading, in which the game cannot execute or use to launch the bullet. Thus, we'd get some sort of thing like a "Divide by 0 error". Resulting in the crash. The same thought applies to the Shock. When in effect, a player in a low position will be back to normal size sooner, and it will take longer for people in a better position, based on where they were in the event of the shock. Like the bullet, the effect doesn't have a defined value for a 13th player, resulting in a null solution, giving us a Divide by 0 error. This, of course, is coming from an idiot with Absolutly no technical knowledge what so ever, and this theory is purly speculation, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

I personally think it could be caused by the cpu player in 13th place trying to determine what item it's meant to get from an item box. As item probability is completely broken in this entire video, it's not unreasonable to say that garbage values could be loaded in the item table for 13 players. It could also simply be something very simple, such as losing track of which checkpoint the 13th player last passed through.

However, i feel as though, mainly because the game seemed to work mostly before the crash, that it would have to be some sort of occurrence that the game had no value for. Although, the idea of the game losing track of checkpoints and things does kinda make some sence. Its a very interesting contribution, and a thought-provoking one too! Thinking about it now, that could probably be what happened.

​@@fra604 The CPU players have to get items too and they tend to refer to a different item table than the human players do. If that item table wasn't loaded properly, then values pertaining to things that aren't items could be pushed in which can result in things that don't exist trying to be used

Mr bean i have a interesting idea for a gamemode Elimination: You randomise the track and start the race Everyone drives a normal lap, however as soon as the top ten finish, the bottom 2 either stop( like in countdown) or are eliminated. This goes on until their is 4 left which its a all out race to the finish line. If you want after every lap the players reset back to the starting line ( besides eliminated players)

That "Baby Mario" extra players cart is a combination of two. It has the standard cart and wheels mashed in with the Nostalgia 1 chassis but without the Nostalgia 1 wheels

If this ever gets released on CTGP, I think the maximum amount of players the game could handle without any bad frame rate would be around 50 (With items enabled). However, I highly doubt it could handle 100 players without crashing (Unless the fps is dropped like in Item Rain). Also, the items placements you normally get in a 12 player room would have to be drastically changed, considering the amount of players in the new mode. Hell, you might need to introduce some new items specifically for this mode, because for some items it's impossible to have more than 2 of them in one room, and if there are more than 12 players, then this could cause some problems.
